Soyo 24" LCD at Office Max $299

I bought this LCD on the last go-round so I have had it for a month or so.

Big, beautiful, and the best LCD deal by far.
No dead pixels, no problems or complaints.
I use it for gaming, surfing etc.., outstanding product & price.

Have had my two for a while, best monitor purchases I ever made. My only complaint is the controls for switching between VGA and DVI. Got used to the buttons on the front of my Dell LCDs, and the fact I could switch to the VGA input without having that PC running. Now it's a race to get it switched after turning the PC on if I need to see it boot.

Purchased mine today. So far, it looks amazing. P-MVA panels sure are MUCH better than TN panels. I always wondered why people paid extra for non-TN panels and now I understand why.

WOW thanks for the info and its for 2 days awesome if its not there wonder if they would give a raincheck since its not like a 6-10am special.

How's gaming on this monitor? Is there any noticeable ghosting or blurring in FPS or RTS games?

this screen is tempting but i think i'll hold off for a couple weeks until black friday comes around...officemax will be selling this exact Soyo for $249.99, which is a great deal imo

Sweet, I hadn't caught that... I think I see an upgrade to a 24" LCD in my future from my current 20" Dell 2005FPW Widescreen LCD :D!

EDIT: Anyone think I could just buy one now and have it pricematched to themselves afterward? It's on sale for $300 right now... $250 would be superb but I doubt I'd catch it in time on Black Friday.

According to this review the Soyo does have ghosting. The only question is is the ghosting tolerable?

"Gamers looking for a panel with a really good response time and very low smearing during fast-action games should look elsewhere. No LCD we have ever seen has totally eliminated the "smear" you get as objects move rapidly across the screen and pixels change color, but most of them do a better job of minimizing the effect than this one does. It's not as bad as LCDs commonly were a few years ago, but it's not up to the standards of today's newer monitors."

I play UT2004, which is a very fast game, on this monitor and I have absolutely no complaints. Maybe someone who is super ultra sensitive would notice it, but I'm very happy with it :D

I don't play RTS's but lately I've been playing a lot of the high-speed FPS Painkiller and never noticed any sort of "ghosting/smearing". I'm one of the people that stayed away from LCDs for years out of gaming concerns: light bleeding and smearing. My old LCD had bleed issues but this Soyo is great.

I have no idea how the reviewer got the impression he or she did. It could be random quality differences from one particular panel to another or it could be the fact that some people are just more sensitive to certain things than others (ex. I used to know people who could detect the SLIGHTEST "flicker" on a CRT monitor which I couldnt see for the life of me). In terms of visual quality/response/etc I could not tell the difference between this LCD and a similar size/spec CRT.

PS ever notice that for ANY one piece of hardware, even stuff you own and love, you can search online and find horrible reviews for it? When I see people cr@p all over products I know are solid it boggles my mind. That's the intarweb for you I suppose.

Wow...nice find.
I advise anyone waiting for a hot deal to don your asbestos undergarments and be waiting outside your neighborhood Officemax come Friday morning.

And hope they have more then 1 in the store for that price.

Same here. I've been holding off ditching either of my 19" CRT's, but @ $250 for a 19x12 24" LCD my resolve may finally be tested - I mean that price for something nearly as big as my clunky LR 27" CRT TV. Sure it may not be in the same class as FAR more expensive competitors, but my eyesight sucks - I probably won't notice the difference.

Only thing is, I'll probably end up pissing off a certain cat in the process if I get one.

Once in a while she'll stare down from up there and follow/attack the mouse cursor, and she *loves* sleeping on the back (keeps her toasty in the winter time!; my tux goes up there once in a while as well).

This is where putting a ski mask on will help. People will give you space. Must have for black friday crowds.

Seriously, though. The first time I went to my local Officemax to check this deal out @299, there were 8 of them on the shelf. I think people were thinking it was some crap TN panel or something, or else, didn't pay any attention to it because at that price, it must be junk.
Not so, in my experience. (n=3)

Agreed. I had the same experience. When I got mine, I was worried they would be sold out, but when I got there, they had 32 in stock, and the guy said that I was the first one they sold, and that was on a Thursday when the sale started on the previous Sunday. I love mine and might get a second one and move the 22" TN panel to my wife's rig...

Has anyone hooked up a XBOX360 or PS3 to the DVI-D input? Any issues?
I already know about the VGA issue.

Hopefully another $299 sale comes around soon. I won't be able to get one on Black Friday weekend.

I've got a 19" LCD I think I might try and sell if I can get one of those 24" from Office Depot on BF...

I picked one of these up back in September for around $290 shipped after tax and coupon, and I couldn't be happier with it. The picture quality is excellent, good viewing angles, and absolutely no ghosting. It's been running pretty much 24/7 for the past three months with no issues at all.

I made sure to purchase it on a credit card that offers warranty protection (basically doubles the manufacturer's warranty on the monitor) just in case there were issues with quality control down the line, but I think as long as there aren't issues out of the box it should be reasonably reliable.

I did have a problem at first where the monitor displayed green sparkles, especially during video playback, but it turned out to be an issue with my video board (X850XT). They went away completely once I upgraded.

Hmmm....after reading up on this I believe I'll wait in line for this on BF. I was going to get the Samsung 22'' from BB, but I think the line at Office Max will be much easier to deal with. This monitor looks solid. I'm only going to use the DVI connection, I won't need to switch inputs, I don't have an XBOX 360, and I enjoy gaming. =) Looks like a great buy. I'll stop at the store to visually check it out the day before, I think. I'll be upgrading from a Gateway 19'' FPD1975W...I hope the improvement in quality is worth it.

Oh...I'll be gaming on a 8800 GT....will that card handle the high resolution on games alright (besides Crysis, which I don't mind).

I really enjoy this screen a lot. For the office work that I do, it's fantastic. The contrast is really good, almost as good as my IBM CRT. The only time I notice any ghosting is if I move around a solid white box.

So for what I do, it's entirely acceptable and was a fantastic bargain.

Does anyone know what time they are opening on BF? Is it early like 5am, or the regular 10am box store time?

Is that not what it was before? Just on sale for $299?

For the last month or so it was at $299. Just FYI, if you act quickly (like, this week) you can still *probably* get it at $299 - I just picked one up today at that price. It was at the manager's discretion, so YMMV.

Interesting. I'll have to try that out.

Mention that you were stoked all weekend about buying this, that you saw ads on the internet, and that you just got your paycheck and looking to only spend $300 on it like you saw in the ads.

The manager price-matched to last week's ad, and I imagine this was the biggest factor in it actually working.

Okay does anyone know if officemax offers their deals online during blackfriday or anyone know how many will be in the store? Also I read it's a VA panel not a TN right? So better for gaming?

....How crowded does Office Max get on Black Friday? The one I'm going to stand in line for opens at 8AM, and I'll get there around 1:30. I can't imagine the line is nearly as bad as Best Buy.

The panel is P-MVA. It claims a 5ms response time, and nobody I know has ever seen ghosting on it, so it will be fine for gaming. TN's have a slightly faster response time, but they look much worse than this panel overall. There's a thread about this monitor in the Displays section: LINK.

I asked, and my local OfficeMax said they were having regular store hours on Black Friday (none of this 5am crap). I hope that helps.

Yeah thats what they said when I called. I don't mind sitting on a camping chair with a book and my iPod for 6.5 hours...

Don't forget to bring the flashlight and a warm coat... if you're waiting 6.5 hours for the store to open, it'll be dark and cold.

Damn, there's no way I'd wait 6+ hours in the cold for a $50 savings. I hope they have a lot. I plan to roll in around noon.
