My buddy lives in a rural area where cable and dsl are unavailable, so he uses a USB card with Verizon service to access the internet. We've decided that we want to setup a box to host this connection, and forward it to a wireless AP so he's no longer tethered by a usb cable, and of course so multiple computers can access the connection at once. My question - I know I can do this with windows, but I want something small and simple out of old hardware, that needs no real maintenance, which doesnt exactly scream windows to me. I'm hoping there is a Linux router distro that can be used to host this type of connection instead of the traditional broadband connection. Please advise.

Why not just get a 3g, or EVDO router?

It might be cheaper to set up a box if he has the parts, as both the Linksys WRT54G3G-AT and the WRT54G3G-ST require a PCMCIA Type II card which he would need to purchase in addition to the router.

There are other 3G routers, such as from TopGlobal and Kyocera which both support USB modems.

Oh, you are correct. Should have checked 3gstore before posting, I had never heard of those before.

What he said. The Kyocera is one of the older models out but as long as you don't need vpn passthrough(which doesn't work right on it) seems to be pretty good.
