~PORTAL! Thread~

Just try hosting the zipped file on filefront or megupload or something so that the guy earlier in this thread can download it and rehost it.

I would love to but i am having issues. When I zip it, using winzip, and I send it via email, when it's unzipped all kinds of errors emerge...

any suggestions? I'm a bit of a n00b when it comes to zipping etc...

Just right-click it, send to zip file or whatever, or with winrar rar it.

Beat it yesterday and by the skin of my teeth, the clock was down under 5 seconds and I really didn't want to do it over but by shear luck the last missile hit at the right time.

Oh God this game had me ROFLing all over.

Some of the best quotes in the history of electronic entertainment.

"That thing you burnt up isn't important to me. Not any more. It's the Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit; it makes shoes for orphans. Nice job breaking it, hero"

"Look - we're both stuck in this place. I'll use lasers to inscribe a line down the center of the facility, and one half will be where you live, and I'll live in the other half. We won't have to try to kill each other or even talk if we don't feel like it."

"Good news. I figured out what that thing you just incinerated was. It was a morality core they installed after I flooded the enrichment center with a deadly neurotoxin to make me stop flooding the enrichment center with a deadly neurotoxin."

"That thing is probably a sewage containment unit. So just go ahead, rub your face all over it. (Pause) Maybe you should marry that thing since you love it so much. Do you want to marry it? WELL I WON'T LET YOU! How does that feel? (Pause) Think about it. If that thing is important, why don't I know about it? (Pause) I'll tell you what that thing *isn't* - it isn't yours! So leave it alone!"

"Did you just stick that Aperture-Science-Thing-We-Don't-Know-What-It-Does into the Aperture-Science-Emergency-Intelligence-Incinerator!?"

and now the best quotes particularly concerning our friend Companion Cube :D

"The symptoms most commonly produced by Enrichment Center testing are superstition, perceiving inanimate objects as alive, and hallucinations. The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak."

"The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube cannot speak. In the event that the weighted companion cube does speak, the Enrichment Center urges you to disregard its advice."

"There was even going to be a party for you. A big party that all your friends were invited to. I invited your best friend the companion cube. Of course, he couldn't come because you MURDERED HIM. All your other friends couldn't come either because you don't have any other friends because of how unlikable you are. Unlikable, it says so here in your personnel file: Unlikable. Liked by no one. A bitter, unlikable loner whose passing shall not be mourned. SHALL. NOT. BE. MOURNED. That's exactly what it says. Very formal. Very official. It also says you're adopted, so that's funny too."

Best quote for me was, when you start your escape.

Remember when I was about to incinerate you, and I was like "goodbye" and you were like "no waaay"

It's just the way the AI voice starts to get desperate, but then when she quotes herself ("goodbye") she snaps back into her more normal tone, it's great, that voice fascinates me.

I just wish more developers would make games that were as unique and fun as this one. I dunno how much praise the game will get because its also coupled with the two big hitters and more well known EP2 / TF2. It was definitely an excellent buy, we need more developers to look outside the box (or cube :p)

Any luck with the Portal Sound Scheme? I usually never use sound schemes, but a good portal one would be worth it!

Portal is truly a great game. I knew the concept would be cool, but they really did everything right with this game. From the very beginning, to the AI voice, to the ending credits, its beautiful. I loved the nice touch with the ascii graphics in the credits.

Maybe just ramblings but when I first started playing thru the game I realized there is no falling damage. Then when I was looking at my mirror image in one of the portals I noticed the leg braces coming down from the back of the knees and was surprised to see that much attention to detail. I think its a cool idea. They look like some of the prosthetic legs they are giving to soldiers coming back from iraq that need a prosthetic to run with.
Guess is was Valve's way of giving people no falling damage for the game.

There was a big discussion on this already, people were originally kinda upset that there was no falling damage, so they added the braces.

Play through the game with dev commentary on, you will learn a lot.

Yeah the commentary really details how much the dev team paid attention to the players reactions and questions. There is a lot of elements that are present because of how people responded to the puzzles. Probably the best is how the Companion Cube came about, just a few simple things changed t from a forgettable cube to something that is soon to be a plush toy

Reminds me of Eli Vance's "leg," and also the legs of the stalkers.

Just played thru a couple of levels last night with the dev on. Pretty interesting, actually its the first time I have done this. I have meant too in the past. Makes me want to go back thru the entire HL2 game all over again with dev comments to see what they say.

Yeah thats the one :)

Her tone becomes more human like as she gets more desperate and trys to reason with you, but clearly quotes herself from before when her tone is purely logical, so you get this sort of contrast, a quick snap back to how she was speaking to you 20 minutes ago.

I don't know what it is about that particular line that facinates me so much, I thought it was really funny when i first heard it on my initial run through, but it seems like theres so much more to it, the more I think about it.

Seems like maybe the AI is a little more advanced than we initially expect, and that how we're first presented it, but its almost as if that was a show the GlaDOS was putting on for us, and you see her true colours during the final confrontation where her voice by that point is almost as fluid as a normal humans.

One question where the hell are people getting the name Chell from? Unless i missed it its not in the commentary and when referring to the character GLaDOS simply says "insert subject name here".

sorry, let me correct.... pm me your email address if you want the portal sound scheme i created.

How do you extract the sounds from the GCF files? I mainly want the dialog.

I wrote 'the cake is a lie" a few times on the mirror in my bathroom with a dry erase marker. During LAN the first person who went to the bathroom laughed his ass off. :D

Out of all the things in the Orange Box, I have to say that Portal was the most enjoyable for me.
After beating the Advanced maps and most of the Time trial, portal limit and step ones (GOLD RATING IS INSANELY HARD), I feel as If I really got my monies worth! Lots of replay and very awesome game. Vavle hit it dead on! I think I am going to listen to the Dev chat now.

So does anyone know where people are getting the name Chell for the female protagonist?

What level # is that room in? (Don't tell me more, I wanna find it.)

I have all the textures from that wall as my desktop, though.

So do you want the level # or not? :p

I'll give you a hint, look at the walls some more and you can easily figure it out.
