In the immortal words of Freddy Mercury…another one bites the dust. While these guys may be out of business, that sound you hear is ten other sites popping up in its place. One thing is for sure, with OiNK’s hardware being confiscated, a lot of people that provided the leaked tunes are probably quaking in their boots right about now.

British and Dutch police said they shut down Tuesday the website OiNK, the world's biggest source of pirated pre-release chart albums. OiNK distributed albums often weeks ahead of their official release date. More than 60 major album releases had been leaked onto the Internet so far this year.

:(

I had the most beastily ratio...

I think it's time to prune the downloads folder....

I am still willing to bet that a vast majority of the music that pops up online weeks before its release is due to people that work in the music industry. Why not go after them just like anyone else?

At least this was justified - the whole "pre-release" part fucked them over good.

To Late! The MPAA will be knocking on your door soon!

Opps, I guess its the RIAA, but either way, deleting the songs now wont do any good, you already committed the crime and now they have the records to prove it sense they grabbed all the servers. You think they care if there still on your hard drive or not!

If they do go after anyone other then the guy running the whole thing, it will probably be the people with the biggest upload/download amount.

I'd target the people who leak promos and previews, and find out better ways to promote these albums than by simply sending out a CD that freaking anyone can copy, but with the RIAA and MPAA there's no time for rational thought.

There were 180,000 user accounts on the site. They're only gonna be going after the ones that contributed to the pre-releases, and maybe people who donated via paypal, which is not a smart thing to do.

The rest of us will be fine. Just like when pirate bay got raided.

Not quite sure if Jammie Thomas and students in 19 universities would agree with you.

Well for one, they would have to monitor you and catch you in the process to even get you.

But question, were they actually distributing the files on their servers? or just torrent files?

If the dutch are going after it what does that have to do with us in the U.S.? I thought all they loved was GOOOOLD! (austin powers)

More PR chest beating, repeated by media with no fact checking. Oink had no more pre-release material than any other torrent site on the internet, it wasn't about early releases, it was all about quality. It was the best because of the community it had, not the amount of alleged early "warez" or any other PR reason they give. Oink will be missed by many.

wow, a MPAA came over to my house today and gave me a fine of 50grand!!... haha just kidding :D.. I don't pirate music from sites... well I use limwire :D

I can already see music sales skyrocketing and pirates 'round the world repenting their downloads.

Glad to see the men and women of law enforcement are out there solving real crimes, like murder, rape, child pornography, kidnapping, and music downloading.

i never even heard of OiNK until i read this article....so it must not have been as widespread a problem as they make it out to be:eek:

to bad they don't go after all the people that do credit fraud/stealing people identitys as much as they do people that UL/DL music. how many millions does the riaa/mpaa spend a year going after stuff like this, that could be spent to pay the artists more?

Shameful, after all these years I still like to buy just USED cd's for 1 penny ( 2 bucks S&H) at amazon and then rip them for what ever I like. I just which I had a bigger storage area to keep the little bastards when I'am done ripping them. :D

Let someone else pay the man not me.

Shit. There goes my favorite source for hard to find electronica and chillout mixes. I just donated 5 pounds to them last week as well. Double D'oh! Anyone have an acidlounge invite?

:(

i never used oink

Then you really, really missed out. it was basically a hub where you could get cd quality (or thereabouts) albums in under 4 minutes. it had everything. I predict the return after 2 weeks.

I think you're trying to be sarcastic, but I'm not sure it's working. Why is rape in the same category as music downloading? There's no need to be sarcastic about rape or murder.

i'm glad i missed out on paying 220 grand ;) :D

If it wasn't for Oink, I would've never heard of great artists like Elliott Smith. The site is more than just a "roar - private music tracker arrrgh" site. The community was amazing and never failed to amaze me in finding new music to listen to.

I doubt that was his intention. What he's stating is, he's glad that law enforcement is wasting their time on people pirating things (victim less crime), than doing real work catching the bad guys that murder, rape, etc..

Tis a sad day... I loved all the "bootlegs" they had on there... some good rare stuff of Pearl Jam and others... stuff that was hard to find....

Wasnt there a stickied link for Oink invites on the Free Stuff subforum forever? I just never knew what it was.

Easy to find if you paid for it....

That was only the first guy when their "lawsuits instead of profit" idea was new.

Maybe im just a napster baby, and grew up with the idea that music is meant to be shared and appreciated. Maybe not, but it still seems absurd to shell out 15 clams for a CD.

Concerts should be paid for

Music is meant to be shared and appreciated. It lets you know who's good, who's getting better and who's got potential to do so. Yea, the radio lets you know what "new name" the big guys have decided everyone else gets to listen to, but have you wondered where MIMS went when they stopped playing his music all the time? thats right. you didn't, because mims sucks. but he was still on the radio, which is my point. You can't rely on the radio to tell you what good music is out there. It only tells you what music is currently the Top Pop and what the record industry wants you to buy at the moment.

I've got a friends who follows Umphrey's McGee around and sees every show they do in the midwest. He's also at most sound tribe shows, discobiscuit shows, and a few others. he doesn't buy CDs, but he does buy his tickets and buy shirts and stuff. You know, the part thats worth the money.

he's probably the biggest "fan" of the music he listens to, despite downloading all the shows he was at and the few he missed on oink. Does that make him an enemy of music? oh yea, and he also used oink to find new music to see if he likes it. He just couldn't stop himself from stealing more and more!
