ATH-A900, before this I had some Sennheiser 497's, and some Icemat Siberia 2's. These things sound super nice, still breaking them in though. The sound isolation is great on them too.

ShimmyT:

Where'd ya find that banana hanger? I've looked at Wal-Mart and Target, but can't seem to find them. Thanks!

bed, bath, and beyond, $9.99

They're kind of cheap and mine already broke. I'm going to get one of the woo audio stands to replace it.

Yep, Bed Bath & Beyond. $9.99, I might look into having one custom made though. I've got access to one of the local tech centers for high school students, and they love making custom metal / wood work things.

Those BedBathBeyond hangers.... I was one of the first, if not the first, who popularized it on headfi. They're so much better looking than a lot of other "banana" hangers I saw.

For 9.99$, you can't beat that stand. Just make sure to put a little padding on the hook and you're done. I used those pencil grip pads from officemax.... $1 for a pack of 5 colors... not bad.

I just put an order in for a silver Headamp GS-1 with Stepped Attenuator, but will have to wait 8 weeks for it to ship.

I also just had a mega source upgrade from an Emu 0404 USB to a Bel Canto Dac 3, with Nordost cabling. That should be here by Monday :)

Pictures will ensue :)

Bel Canto 3... nice. Make sure to post pics! How much did those set you back?

Alot :D

I purchased the "package" from Todd The Vinyl Junkie that includes Nordost White Light optical cable, and an Iriver imp550 discman. The discman serves as a transport. Up until now, I have not had a dedicated cd player, relying on USB audio.

The package cost $2,350.00, and about $18 or so shipping. So by my calculations, it basically is a free discman for throwing around. His price for the DAC without the Nordost or discman was $2150, so I figured what the hell, I need a good optical cable anyway.

My plan is to eventually get a real transport. But the Iriver will suffice in tandem with the DAC3's own USB input, giving me computer audio and CD audio.

I have been waiting for freaking ever for some sort of upgrade. I was considering a Lavry DA10, but I figured upgraditus would come back, so why not go into the next tier of DACs. I am soooo pumped to hear "high end" finally. Not pseudo high end, but real, unadulterated high end sound.

The hard part is waiting 8 weeks for the GS1. Until then all I have is a tomahawk
I decided for now to focus on headphones, and put the speaker purchase on hold. I would have needed to purchase a higher end DAC anyway, so I probably would be looking at 10K$ for everything, which I most certainly do not have, lol.

The hard part is waiting 8 weeks for the GS-1, during which time I will only have a tomahawk

Oh hell yeah, I will post pics. It will be the first proper pic from me for this thread, lol. I don't know if I will open the chasis though... we may have to live with external pics only.

I was thinking of also adding a Grado RS-1 to compliment the HD650/GS-1 rig. What do you all think?

What is it that you're looking to add/change soundwise? Given a certain set of equipment, the HD650 and RS1 can sound quite similar (that's with a Zu cable on the HD650, flat pads on the RS1). With bowls, the RS1 is certainly a different character, but I only preferred it to the HD650 about 20% of the time (very recording specific), otherwise it was just too colored sounding.

2 things to say...

1. Wow on the price... superbly done my friend. That is baller status fo sho.
2. I agree, that is right in the good meat of hi-end DACs... your DAC is technically better than mine now. :(

I am.... ahem.... jealous.

Post pics, even if we have to live with external pics....!

Oh, and when is our T-minus? For the DAC? I know the GS-1 is T-8weeks...

Good luck with the wait!

lol yeah. I recently got a new job and now I actually get a living wage. Its weird, because once I have the source and amp its like; what now?

In regards to the Grados, I was thinking I may want a more aggressive 'phone for metal. HD650 for Dave Brubeck, RS-1 for Meshuggah, or thereabouts. I have not heard the RS1, just read about it, so my thinking may be flawed here. One thing I know for sure is if I do get them, they will be recabled. I hate grado's cabling.

I think the DAC is supposed to be on my doorstep on Monday. I hope its not a "sign for package" thing, 'cause I'll be at work. I may need to go to the post office.

T-5days :D

Yep, finally picked one of those hangers up and really like it. Better than just laying the phones on my speaker!

I went to bed bath and beyond and couldn't find them. Even had a manager help me look. What section did you find them?

I found them in the kitchen section, although I'm sure not all the B,B, & B stores are laid out the same, but mine was found on the right side of the store near the entrance of the store...

While great for headphones, I don't understand the point of this for its intended purpose; can't you just put bananas on the table? Seems like more trouble than its worth for bananas lol.
From the link above:
Keep bananas neat and off your countertop with this contemporarily styled banana tree. Sleek curves and a chic satin nickel finish make it an attractive addition to your kitchen decor.

Awesome job of reading the links you post. :p

I got my own link for you to not read:

reading is over rated :D

On another topic: Mister X, do you build dynahi-type amps?

Need a cheap stand? Go behind any of the clothing outlets and try to find a t-shirt display stand:

^^ Lol! Looks like they blew their video budget on Taco Bell and Wild Turkey, so they whipped this one out in 20 minutes. Good music, pointless video. But kind of funny I guess. :p

Hip hip HOORAY!
I got my Bel Canto Dac3 from Todd The Vinyl Junkie today :)

Now I need an extention jack to fit into the tiny Tomahawk amp, so I can use my HD650s. Until I do, they dont fit next to the RCA-to-Mini jack, lol.

Next order of buisnes is to get my Headamp GS-1, and allocate the Tomahawk to portable rig only.

Enjoy the gear porn :)

Daaang! Sweetness is in the house!

How do you like the sound so far? How did it improve from your previous (and crappy) DAC/onboard (or what have you)?

Man... I'm aching to open up my own package that arrived today... it's 70 pounds.... and it's much much much bigger than your Bel Canto, Aardvark...

You better watch for my audio porn, ok? :)

I found a Grado headphone extension cable, so I was able to listen on the HD650s.

Short answer: Hasta La Vista, Emu. ;)

Nothing has burned in yet (not even the tommahawk), but already it is vastly superior in every way. Its not like it does one thing better than the Emu, every single aspect is better. Cleaner, less bloat, FAR more details, especially low-level details / complexity. I listened to a little Porcupine Tree, and Steve Hoffman remastered Eagles and Metallica.

I finally really enjoy Metallica again. In all 3 CDs, I heard either details I never heard before, or details presented in a manner never heard before. For example, the drums in Anesthetisize took on new found texture and realism. Its hard to describe how much better it was, without sounding like a fanboy.
Dynamics were also vastly improved. I could also hear how much better the Eagles was, as a recording, than the Porcupine Tree. This baby lets good recordings really scale to new sonic heights. -- This was through an optical cable to an Iriver discman. I have yet to hear the USB. That will have to wait till at least tomorrow.

The manual said that it takes several hundred hours to break in, so I will have a better idea in a few weeks.

The main caveat of my 'review' is that this is through a Tommahawk, which was never intended to power the HD650, it just happens to be the only amp I have ATM, as I sold my SR71 to help pay for the Bel Canto.

Now I just need to cleanly rout the cables. I was in a big rush to listen tonight, so I just lay the cables down with no thought to looks.

**forgot to mention, I never looked at the Senns as "veiled", but now, I think its safe to remove all doubt. No veil here.**

PINIPIG523:
...Damn 70 pounds... are we talking amp, source, preamp, speaker? I don't even know of any sources that heavy. Maybe some sort of McIntosh? Let it be a surprise:) Looking forward to pics :)

My amp is already about 100lbs... I don't think I can afford a preamp that's 70 lbs... I like my current speakers which are about 80lbs a piece.... it MIGHT be a source of some sort (definitely not a DAC, because a 70lb DAC would be a little more than I can afford on my student budget). You will see soon enough, keep your eyes peeled. :)

Glad you have favorable reviews with regards to your Bel Canto 3... though, was there ever any doubt? Nah... ;). ENJOY, my friend!

My money is that you finally found a vinyl rig :p

This is my first complete "audiophile" grade setup...DT880/250 05' with Cardas recable and Cardas 3.5mm to rca patch cable, courtesy of "cantsleep" from head-fi.org. Powered by a MisterX PPAv2. I'd like to publicly praise both of these great guys for all their help and advice. /Applaud

How do they sound do you ask? Treble has been smoothed WAY out no more gritting your teeth on the highs and the bass has been brought forward. Ideal sound imho.
