HP w2207 vs NEC wmgx2?

I whittled my choices down to these two lcd's. First off, I will be using it for gaming and office work, that's it. No color reproduction activities.

Now, I realize the vast majority of people say there is no comparison between a TN (HP) panel and an IPS (NEC) panel, however I must be in the minority since I do not notice a *vast* difference bewteen the two. I DO notice the viewing angle variance in the HP but do not notice the color variance.

NEC
Is it still worth my while to get the NEC for around ~$100 more than the HP especially since the NEC is being discontinued? What happens if I get one from NEC with bad pixels or an out right lemon out of the box? What do I get back from NEC? Any reason not to get the NEC?

HP
If you sit for the most part straight on, is the viewing angle on the HP still bad? I'm also a sloucher, will the dark areas be more noticeable then? Any reason not to get the HP?

Both run at the same resolution however, if I understand correctly, the HP will seem more pixelated since it is a 22" vs a 20". Is this true? Is the 20" that much more crisper? Also, my eyesight isn't the greatest anymore. I'm not sure I can run a default resolution of 1680x1050 at least for reading text, websites, etc (games, heck ya!). Will a 22" be more suitable then?

Oh yeah, 24" are out of the question. I feel those are too big for my needs plus I don't have the juice to run a decent setup.

Thanks!

The veiwing angles on a TN will get to you if you are used to a IPS panel or CRT.

All though the HP has excellent viewing angles for a TN, it's still a TN. The colors fade a little toward the bottom of the monitor. Pixelation won't be a factor at native res, unless you put your face right up to the screen. I don't know how the NEC scales, but the HP scales better than anything I have seen to date.

If you can afford an IPS panel, and don't want the extra 2", then the NEC is probably the better choice. You may get a little worse response time from it, but that's about it.

As far as getting a bad monitor, I'm sure NEC will still have replacements available. But I would get it from a brick and mortar store if possible, so it could be exchanged in the end. I never by LCDs online unless it's direct from the manufacturer, since most online retailer's return policies are garbage.

If you ask me...the NEC outclasses the HP. I bought the 20WMGX2 a few weeks ago and have no regrets..there is one stuck pixel but it is only visible on certain color backgrounds (and only if I look for it) so I called it good since everything else is fine. Not only is it a good all around desktop monitor but also makes a surprisingly good bedroom tv after you get the colors sorted (separate adjustments from the desktop!) and aspect ratio to your liking. As far as trouble returning to NEC if there are issues...I don't know about that.

do any brick and mortars have this one (nec) left or only online?

any other thoughts?

I've got the W2207. It's a TN panel , but I really like it for the price. I have no doubts that the NEC outclasses it, I just wanted a 22" and came across a good deal on the W2207. I came from a CRT and first made the switch to a LCD by way of the Acer 22" deal BB had for 189.00. I was very unhappy with that unit. It ghosted bigtime and felt cheap. I went on a crusade to find a LCD that did not ghost. I even took my comp into CC and hooked it up to all their monitors. I ended up getting the 2207. I like the glossy screen, and to be honest have not really noticed the color shifting/bad viewing angles everyone is talking about. I sit directly in front of mine and have no problems at all. I can say that I personally have been very pleased with the 2207.

I've had w2207 and 20wmgx2, liked the w2207 better. Less input lag and those extra 2 inches make a lot of difference.

Did you make a decision yet Gooter? I'm thinking between these two screens myself.

NEC seems the better choice for image quality, the HP extra 2" is good for gaming, and as for response times.. I'm not sure which is better as I haven't seen a review with both of these screens together!

Price wise, the NEC is about £300 here and the HP £200, so the HP is very tempting!

I bought the Nec 20wmgx2 and I can't stop gawking at the thing. It's such a good monitor especially compared to those TN monitors I saw in BestBuy while looking for one. Even though you get the monitor online, you can always replace it if you get anything wrong. I got a perfect monitor on the first shipping except a stuck pixel popped up the next day but like joemama said, I don't even notice it unless I'm trying to look for it. Also if you can't see the text on this monitor you're either legally blind or sitting 10 feet away. Ghosting isn't a problem either. I use this monitor to game a lot and I have yet to notice ANY ghosting in all the games I play (Bioshock,Counterstrike: Source, BF2, WoW etc). Unless you want those 2 extra inches, this monitor is worth the money.

The stand on the HP is nicer than many. I don't like 22''s as a rule (same pixels as a 20' - just stretched out) but the nice thing about gaming is that cheap, one dimensional monitors can still shine. That said, the NEC is $400 with rebate and Newegg is selling the HP for $350. The HP is probably good for you and what you want it for - but if you like to take digital photos (not to edit - just to look at) with a half decent camera (meaning anything 2 or 3 years old) then get the NEC because it will crush HP at that. I've never had any lag on my NEC at all.

There is a 22 inch Lenovo that comes out in June. 1920x1200 . Does anyone knows if it's going to be glossy screen like the HP and the NEC ?

@ adobian it's not nice to steal from others :D
I would get the NEC if you can spare it.
If you don't want to spend the extra money just get the 2207.
I'm sure you will be happy with either one.

No, not yet LOL. I usually tend to agonize over these decisions for weeks if not months. However, I do realize the NEC's may not be around for much longer. I am leaning very heavily towards the NEC due to its faithful color reproduction. Also since the price of both (after rebates) is fairly similar... I'm not going to fret over an extra $50-75.

One quick question, does the NEC do scaling or 1:1 pixel ratio (whatever it is called when you play a game that is less than the native res of the lcd)? Note that I will be getting a Nvidia card so I think I can rely on the card to do it if the monitor does not.

Thanks again everyone!

lol, you sound like me.

Well I saw a w2207 (and w2007) in the flesh today and was amazed at the colours on the screen. I'm definatley going to buy one seeing as they are quite a bit cheaper here than the NEC.

I've never seen the NEC in person so I can do this, as unless I saw how much better the colours were on the NEC I would find it hard to believe that they are indeed better!! (The HP's really did look beautiful to me.)

I believe the NEC does do 1:1, or at least the european version does I remember there was once a difference between our version and the US version!?

I'm in the same boat as you. I am a gamer and am worried about the slower response time of the NEC. I believe the NEC gets the 6ms from overdrive and I'm not too sure but I think overdrive causes more problems than helps.

I think I missed my chance to get the NEC. There appears to be no more $100 rebate. :( Anyone think they will bring it back? If not, I guess I'll have to get the HP then as I didn't want to spend over $500 for a monitor, even for a good one.

I doubt it will be back because the remaining stock is low enough now they can start shipping the newer models to retailers. I've been telling everyone to hurry for weeks..;)

I have been using the HP 20 inch for quite a while.

If I had to do it over, I will get the HP 24 inch, just came out.

But that Lenovo 22 inch is supposed to have the color gamut as high as that of the NEC. I wish it is a glossy, I would jump on it in a heart beat, for 1920x1200.
