I am attending PSU for college, and we are limited to uploading 2gb of data and downloading 2gb of data per week. However, when we are on the campus wireless network, it doesn't count against us. Since I love tv and download at least 2gb of my shows per week, I wanted to see if I can build a cantenna to reach a wifi access point about 100 yards away. This way, I don't have to go to my commons area every time I want to torrent. First off, I just wanted to know if this is possible. Is it feasible for a cantenna to reach 100 yards? Second, would the cost be expensive, besides buying a usb wifi adapter?

I don't know how strong your signal is without an adapter, but if it's close enough (it may not be, you'll just have to try) you can do this.

Get a cell phone (3G is better) and some Ethernet cable. Wrap the Ethernet cable around the cell phone and leave about 3" at one end to connect to the back of your laptop. Plug that in (make sure the phone is on but the keys are locked. You may have to tape the Ethernet cable to the phone and obviously the drawback is that you can't use the phone while doing this) and your wireless signal will improve. Your computer may or may not report an additional wireless device as most cell phones do not self-ID so the computer will most likely take advantage of it without saying anything. In fact your wireless signal strength may read "0%." I used this trick to get wireless from my University in the lounge of my dorm before I bought a souped-up Linsys WRT54G.

There's no way It'll be able to register, I'm too far away. I have an iPhone, which isn't 3g, but I'll try it anyway. I'll also try slowly walking towards our commons area and see how close I have to be to get a signal. But seriously, would a cantenna (built right) be able to pick up a signal that's 100 yards away?

I don't know how to build a cantenna, sorry. I didn't know how far away you were from the limit of the signal, I thought you were 100 yards away from the transmitter. Good luck though.

here is a couple of websites for you.
http://www.cantenna.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cantenna

The wiki one gives you a guide to build your own which will be very inexpensive. If it works you can shell out for a better one that would provide you a better signal. Also, ive never done this my self so if you need questions simply go to a search engine chances are you'll find the information you are looking for.

Too much information, dude. We're not going to help you circumvent your campus network policy so that you can download copyrighted material.
