I sold my 30GB iPod on ebay for $150.00 the day the new ones came out and bought one of the new 80GB iPod Classics the next day.

How much were you expecting in a non hard drive base system?
Would you pay the huge mark up to get a 32gb iPod touch?

Uhm, I was expecting a Hard drive based system at around the same price...

I don't mind if it's 15mm thick, seriously. I'd take an extra 7mm (yes, current single platter 1.8" drives are around 4.8mm thick, and the rubber padding is another 2-3mm) for 3-5x the space.

That extra 7mm could also literally *double* the battery capacity, for a nice 1360mah or something, to deal with the power requirement of the HD, so don't give me the battery argument.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a 160gb. I want to try converting some of my FLAC to ALAC at home first to see if it works seemlessly.

I have a black 5thG 80 gig ipod - i got it because it was the biggest available - but the 160 gig? I want it now!

I will prob get the 16GB iTouch for the wife as a present. I have $200 in GC to BestBuys. I have nothing else that I want/need so I am good....

After actually checking out the new nanos at bb today, I'm not sure what I actually want. The new nano is so damn small, and 8gb flash would serve my portable needs.

I'm going to mull this one over.

Thank to your feedback i think im gonan get myself a 8gig nano :D I was on the boarderline of should i get one...

I'll stick to my 30gb classic iPod. This touch screen iPod is not going to make music sound any better.

edit: Also, iTunes has been pretty solid for me since it was introduced - I'd like to hear why it sucks.

Because it does not allow you to just drop MP3 files on your ipod, they have to be transfered and synced through Itunes which is pretty lame IMO. The whole reason I do not own an Ipod myself...

In reality there is no need for itunes at all IMO, but if they want to make their own interface they should still allow drag and drop as well.

The only reason I would even consider purchasing one is because I'm too lazy to build a car puter that would allow me to wirlessly transfer music to my car, and because ipods have the most support from HU manufacturers. By now they should at least have wireless transmition to the ipod for these prices. A much more useful feature than a touch screen IMO.

I've never seen a need for one. If I am in my car I have all my music right there. at home? its on my puter. at school? well the 3 minute walk allows MAYBE one song to play. at about3 songs a day I just see no need at all.

You don't go to the gym or exercise often?

Ride your bike?
Go on a hike
Lay at the beach or pool?
Take a plane ride?
Ride on a bus?
Wait in a long line?
Sat some place when you could just listen to music?

These are all reason why I use and like my iPod (or any portable player)

the new ones are nice but I think I am going to pick up a refurb 5.5 gen or something. Rockbox makes me happy. It will be something that can replace my aging h320.

I have a car... thus no bike, plane rides, bus use etc. I work at UPS so I really have no need for a work out or a gym membership. If I were to sit and listen to music I would do it at home where I have high quality speakers and can really get into the music. As a musician I am very picky about how my music sounds and no offense.. earbuds cannot compete to a home stereo system. I own 100+ LPs and hundreds of CD albums ranging from Monteverdi to Linkin Park. I love music. I just do not see the need in my life for one.

The touch is too expensive for me and not big enough to hold the music I like to travel with and the classic is pretty much an iPod Video with more storage space and I do not need anymore than the 30gb I currently have....so in other words I am sticking with my Zune for now :p

Frankly I am surprised Apple did not do something more with the iPod Classic/Video model...it is so close to the last gen and really does not bring any new features to the table :(

No new features?
Hmm....
~New interface
~Best battery life ever
~Largest capacity of any MP3 player
~New shell
~Cover Flow
~Smaller design

Nope nothing new I guess.

Anyone heard of the second rate DACs they give these things, the sub-par screens, or my FS thread with iPod accessories? (whoops, was that an ad? :p)

The interface is pretty much the same
Battery life is only increased a little and was plenty before
Capacity is Capacity...they pop in a new hard drive
I would HOPE the outside would change, if not Apple has a huge problem
Cover Flow is glitcy when you have tons of albums like I do
It is not really any smaller (not a big jump like the last generations were)

Is what I mean is there is no new ground breaking feature...when the 4G iPod came out it brough the new click wheel, iPod Photo came out it brought color screen, iPod Video brought Video and smaller size, I was hoping for like some new big feature...not more space and battery life

How about like an integrated FM radio for once...like most other MP3 players, or wifi to access the music store, or an IR receiver so you could control it with a remote w/o and extra dock, etc.

Isn't this expected from Apple products on every new product re-design? I'd hope they have more efficient products. I didn't find anything "radical" or worth replacing my previous ipods for.

They are expected to this every time? Is that in some contract?
Really, the "new" innovation is the iPod touch, while it is still low in space it is the next thing that will be making its way to the top. That is the thing Apple brought new to the table in my opinion, and is exactly what they should be doing.

Thing that bugs me about the touch, even how nice it is and yes I think it will be the future of iPods once flash memory comes down in $$$, is that it is simply a slimmed down iPhone! Even the dang software is the same...all they really did was remove the phone and make it slimmer (probably since there are no phone components, that just happened on its own).

I dunno, I just was expecting something more, not all of us have $300 to drop on a 8gb MP3 player...

I was hoping for something like an iPod Video with a larger screen in the same form factor, or something like that...not a whole new model line based on another product.

I got my iPod Touch week 38. Screen and everything else is fine. I love it. Great device. There are things missing that I would like, but I'll leave that to the hackers. As is, I love it. The browser and battery life are awesome. (Replaced my iRiver H340)

what cans do you have plugged into that? the first thing im going to do when i get my touch is throw away the apple ear buds.......

160GB iPod Classic inc.

I want the iPod touch but it just doesn't have enough space and I can't justify $300-400 for a gimp ass web browser that plays some music with only 8/16 Gigs. :-\ If they had one in 30 gig, I'd go for it though.

At that moment, I had a pair of Harman Kardon speakers on my desk plugged into the Touch. The Apple ear buds are pretty crappy. I am probably going to get a new set for Xmas or something.

Agreed. I'll stick with my 30gb.

8gb touch for me... once my local best buy gets them in stock....
I have a 1gb nano that is just.... to small for me now... also have a 20gb photo that I will be selling. 16gb is too much for me. 8gb will do just fine for a while. I have looked at all the other MP3 players... and they dont compare in quality to apple. All these other brands are not competing with apple, they are trying to catch up to them...

All of my siblings (except for me) has a variant of the iPod family.

Brother: iPod Touch 16 gig
Brother: iPhone 8 gig
Sister: Nano 8 gig

:)

I have to admit, the apple products are pretty cool.
Great interface

I want to pickup a 8gb nano, but I am wondering a few things,

1. Can you bookmark spots in long mp3's? i.e. audiobooks so you can come back to a spot afterwards
2. With the new nano's is there still some software where I can transfer my mp3's over to it without Itunes? Never had Itunes installed before and don't really want to.
3. Headphones, I have used my brothers 30gb video before and he has the stock apple headphones, I am really into running and hiking and need something that will stay in my ear with good sound quality. With the apple ones, they fall out every few steps, or when I'm biking forgot about it.
4. Arm band, sweat proof? Is there a good arm band out there for the new nano's? Need something that will keep it dry, my brothers looked like it was dropped in a pool after a half-marathon (keeped it on my waist, no armband)

the iriver with rockbox was an amazing device. But this iphone I got is pretty sweet

Those new ipods are nice, I have a 30 gb black ipod. I have been looking at Zunes tho and I here there is a new version coming soon, i dunno they look pretty cool to me and are fairly priced. I like the 3" screen on em. Does anyone here have a Zune? The one thing I espically dont like about the ipod, is that its a pain if u wanna transfer music to another computer or to add music to it from another pc.

Not to get off topic but, I have a few issues with itunes.
a) It sucks at importing mp3s. I've had to retag a lot of my files.
b) In the cases in which it does import the files with tags it will cut off longer file names
c) Playlist managment is not my cup of tea
d) filetype support
e) a few other minor things that slip the mind.

In all amarok ftw! :D

Tthe touch looks really nice, but 16gb? if the screen size is the same as the classic id get a 80gb classic, although if the screens bigger on the touch then it might be worth loosing the space. Currently have a Zen Vision M 30Gb, very happy with that, compared it to my mates 1st gen ipod video craps all over it in screen quality (think hes is 50K mines 250K) features, compatibilty ect..his is abit thinner however. I wonder why creative has not realsed a new line to compete with apple.

I don't have my sister's nano in front of me, but I'll try to answer your questions.

1. I know with my brother's iPhone, you can pause and go to another song and when you come back to that song, it remembers where you paused it. I'm guessing it may be the same with the nano
2. As far as I know, iTunes is the only way to import songs (which I really hate)
3. You may need an adapter/extender because even though it uses a regular 3.5mm plug, it's sunk in so it may not fit.
4. Never looked for one, so I don't know.
