Apple: Pre September 5th iPhones will get a 100$ credit

We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to live up to your high expectations of Apple.
While Steve's obviously inclined to do whatever he wish here, I completely disagree with his inclination to apologize to iPhone buyers for having the 'audacity' to cut the price of his $599 product by $200 in one day. Whether or not he's sincere in his apology, he never should have felt obligated to apologize.

This entire hullabaloo is completely ridiculous, if you ask me. You (not you specifically, Bac) bought a $599 high-technology product: you shouldn't be angry if, one day, the price should happen to drop, even if you had bought only a day before. You deal with it.

I'm hopeful that many iPhone owners will not feel necessarily obligated to take advantage of the store credit, just as Steve should not have felt obligated to apologize for making a completely legitimate decision.

You didn't do anything wrong, Steve-o.

Steve just set a dangerous precedent if you ask me. Prices on consumer electronics drop all the time. Some times by large amounts. I purchased a computer last month and this month it was $150 cheaper. Am I upset I couldn't get it for cheaper, sure. But I also acknowledge that this is the path the market takes.

I agree with previous poster that Apple doesn't owe anything here, and they may have just made a big blunder with the rebate.

i really think they do. obviously prices drop, but not that much in a month and a half after release, especially on such an item.

Apple owes nothing to anyone. All Apple is entitled to do is support the products for the period of time that they state that they'll support them -- that's it. They're 'stuck' with the customer until that time period comes to a close, and then their obligation to that customer is precisely zero.

All Apple owes pre-9/5 iPhone owners is product support and warranty service for whatever length of time that they've stated. Nothing more.

This is an entitlement issue. Steve made a poor decision, not by offering the credits, specifically, but by apologizing to his customers for offering Apple products at lower prices. That's simply absurd.

How many of you did not know this was planned, or see it coming?
After I heard the news of the price drop I was a bit upset, but really I went straight into my wait mode. While I was not truly expecting much, as I was not terribly upset I understand my purchase and the economy, but I figured Jobs would not upset his loyal fan base this much. While this move sounds like a bad thing, what is he losing?

Absolutely nothing, the money is for an Apple gift card, which means they get the money right back. Also, how many people are going to buy something greater than a 100 dollars? (Most) I know I probably will now, been waiting to get a Macbook and this gives me even more reason to do so.

The issue, for me at least, was the slope of the trend line not the direction of the trend line. Said another way, I know technology prices will come done as methods of production improve, what cost 1000 this year will cost 700 next year and so on and so fourth. However, what bothered me was the slope of the line - where 33% was taken off the top just 2 months after release. I was not mad at Apple, but rather, I was mad at myself for being played like a fiddle.

Called Apple today, and gave a similar line to them. At the outset, I said I'm not demanding a refund or other aid, I just wanting to express my disappointment . The man thanked me for not screaming and cursing, which according to him has been an issue today.

What is sad, really sad, is that September 5ths announcements have been overshadowed by stores on the news of pissed off iPhone owners. The real news, the new iPod lineup, has been left in the dust. The momentum that Apple was hoping to generate going into Christmas 2007 has been muted, and it very well may be the crack in the armor their competition has been looking for.

I know this may be bold of me - but I think September 5th will be an inflection point in the iPod / iPhone brand....its all downhill from here.

I see this as nothing but good news for everyone.

1. Apple will get the money back, plus some when people spend their $100 at Apple.com or in an Apple Store.
2. The outcry of early adopters brought even more attention to the iPhone price cut.. I told at least 5 people that might otherwise have been unaware of the reduced price because of my disappointment. A couple of those people are now considering an iPhone purchase when they were not previously doing so.
3. It makes Apple look good. "Apple listens to and cares about its customers"

This move will ensure that many returning and faithful Apple customers will continue to buy their stuff.

Personally, I'm considering buying the Apple Bluetooth headset when I wouldn't have done it before.. simply because I'll be able to get it for $29.99 + tax and shipping out of pocket. I'd like a headset to use with my PS3 anyway, assuming the apple one will work and I don't see why not.

I personally believe that anyone whining and b****ing about how they were "shafted" or "ripped off" by apple needs to take a lesson in business 101. It is not as if apple took a gun to their heads and was like "buy my iphone or I will kill you!" These people bought the iphone on their own free will, either because it suited their needs or because they wanted the "latest and greatest" for bragging rights. If they did it for the latter, I find it hilarious that they are pissed. Get more angry please!

While I do agree the price was dropped rather quickly, early adopters should expect this kind of stuff. This is the price you pay to live on the bleeding edge. I still think the $100 credit is a good move by Apple. No, they do not owe anyone anything, but this is going to be very good for business. As stated earlier most people will spend more than the $100 in the Apple store (not very much you can get $100 or less at an apple store...). Plus, it's great for PR.

I bought one for my wife on the first day. Personally I knew eventually the price would drop, just like every other new gadget's price does. Yet I still bought it. Am I happy that Apple is doing this, well sure. Would it affect any future purchases with Apple if they did not, nope. You pay the price to get something before the masses go out and get it. That is life. And I do not think True Apple fans would be crabbing about this anyhow.

when i found out that it dropped i wasnt pissed or anything because shit happens hhaha alllll the time like this.... everything i buy is 1/2 the price month later. Every peice of computer stuff i get... weeks later is cheaper and faster. Thats life...

Only information that was given was we would learn more this week.
Will the announce they are shipping them or about to ship them, who knows. Hopefully it will not be an "update" saying they are looking into getting ready, blah blah blah.

yea seriously, like I bought my 8800gts 320 for $300 and now you can get them for $280 and cheaper. I didn't care also since I knew that the prices are going to drop. So as you said he really shouldn't had done that. He should had simply left the last 2 pargraph out and it'll be perfect. :)
