For those of us that enjoy great gameplay AND a great storyline, I'm curious to know what game(s) you think have the best storyline of all these hundreds of games over the years.

Console or PC ... doesn't matter. I'll go first.:)

1. God of War - PS2 <--- the best game, the best storyline...ever.

2. Metal Gear Solid - PS1 <---- first 'cinematic' storyline, superb execution and story

3. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (original) - PC <---gameplay was good, but the storyline kept me playing.

Honorable mentions: F.E.A.R. - PC, Onimusha 1 & 2 - PS2

Call me old school...

1. Planescape: Torment
2. Baldur's Gate
3. Baldur's Gate 2
4. Ultima VI

The Thief: The Dark Project kept me hooked right up till the very end. I thought it was an amazingly well done anti-hero storyline.

1. Final Fantasy * i'm a fanboy of the series ;)

2. BioShock * i simply loved the graphics, music, audio, storyline, atmosphere and just about everything in this game :D

3. Half Life 2 *it spawned offspring such as Counter Strike :D

Planescape, no questions asked

SPOILERS

I felt so triumphant when I raised all my friends from the dead in the end game and kicked the trancendant ones ass.

Deus Ex is second, but only because of the flexability

Back in my 32 bit days, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong, Mortal Kombat.

For this millenium so far, Prince of Persia, Bioshock, True Crime: Streets of LA, Saint's Row.

I think the Darkness has a pretty good storyline. Also, God of War 1 and 2.

Space Quest FTW. All of them.

Nothing says "nostalgia" like Space Quest 3 on a Tandy 1000. Shit I'm old.

Oh, and Half-Life. First game I ever called in sick to work so I could stay home and play.

I'm going to say that Planescape: Torment is the best storydriven game of all time for me, closely followed by the original Fallout and Fallout 2 after that.

For more "recent" games I have found KOTOR II and I (in that order) and BioShock to have great stories. I'm still waiting for a KOTOR III to become the second best ever, after Torment ofcause, Torment is godly...

Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy 2, 3, and 7 (US releases)
Warcraft 3
Deus Ex

I remember one of the first times I ever had an emotional reaction to a story: When Kain took back the Dark Crystal from me in Final Fantasy 2. I couldn't believe that bastard betrayed me.

My list:

1. Planescape Torment
2. Baldurs Gate
3. Bioshock
4. KOTOR
5. Deus Ex

edit- totally forgot Dreamfall: The longest Journey which could easily take the place of one of the above..

Shame on all of you for not mentioning Starcraft/Brood Wars!

So anyways, SC/BW's storyline is pretty damn good - lots of twists and turns with superb voice acting.

Looks like i'm the first one to say fallout 1 and 2

As written story goes it's not especially fantastic but you sort of build your own story as you go through it depending on your actions and that really leaves you with something unique once you're finished, I very much enjoyed fallout 2 as it took months to complete.

Man... alot of votes for Planescape Torment. I've never played this game. So its worth picking up for an engrossing storyline?

I have to say that I think the game with the best ongoing storyline is the MGS series.

I would play a hundred more, even if the gameplay would suck, to get the whole story.:D

Indigo Prophecy and Metal gear Solid 2.

IP was the ONLY game I basically couldn't stop playing. I played the entire game in one sitting. I was completely and utterly engrossed in the game and I LOVED it!

1. Deus Ex
2. System Shock 2
3. Half-Life 1
4. Fallout 1 and 2
5. Dreamfall: The Longest Journey

Final Fantasy 7

Fallout 1

Fallout 2

Halflife 2

MGS1

my top 5.

Mine has fantasy, mine has passion... keeps me hooked for 'just one more game' it has highs, it has lows and it never, ever, ends....

It's a story where you battle against the odds, rising and fighting against adversity to become the best there is, untouchable by all who stand in your way...

...and then you get the sack

Football Manager FTW!! :p

If you do, make sure you have an old monitor to play it on so the graphics dont kill you. Its 640x480 max and its painful nowadays
