Here's my plan.

1.) Get an iphone through the the apple refurb store.
2.) Unlock it (everything but visual voicemail will work) http://www.iphonesimfree.com/
3.) Sign up for Sprint Sero
4.) Put sprint SIM in iphone.

Questions? Comments?

Ummm...I was under the impression the Sprint network is something completely different thus not even working with a hacked versions of the iPhone.

I just read this:
Cingular is a GSM-based network, so Apple would also have to develop a CDMA based iPhone to be compatible with Sprint. You can expect Sprint to pursue an agreement with Apple when the exclusivity ends.

Maybe you're right. :(

Sorry, though if you do get an unlocked iPhone I believe you can go to T-mobile, maybe?

Very true, seems the legal system has put a halt on the release of the iPhone software unlock.

I doubt it for very long.

Unlocking a phone for personal gain is completely legal. As long as there is no $$$ ivolved.

Somoene iwll leak it sooner then later. Then apple will be fucked regardless

B.W. is close. Sprint is CDMA. But regardless, the iPOS will NEVER work on Sprints network without a sprint specific version.

and what's wrong with skipping the awful firmware sprint and verizon force on their customers with the majority of the phones they sell?

Sprint (and Verizon since they generally sell the same HTC devices) are more interested in crippling these devices over time than making them any better. They have stopped releasing updates to the htc-6700 purposely so that people are more pressed to buy the new device. Expect to get a better experience by brewing your own OS and custom configuring the registry. Start with the PPC Geeks site and make sure you know what you're getting with your device.

I see what you did there.
Im glad somebody did. Now go play with your $600 dumbphone.

Generally because sprint has the best data network and flat WILL NOT activate any phone not branded as sprint (I mean, they can only do verizon phones, but they wont because the ESN isn't in their network and thus they wont have a programming code for it, nor any way to check the ESN for previous theft, loss, or non-payment).

Because AT&T is just brimming with updates for the 8125. Devices get discontinued. Once they do, theres no reason to continue software releases unless there is something critical for current users to get a hold of. And Verizon is far more restrictive on their UI and features than sprint is.

Sounds like someone couldn't afford one? If not, then stop sounding all butt-hurt and let people spend their hard-earned cash how they like. Believe it or not, some people actually love the features on the iPhone. Crazy, I know, but true.

I didn't say "a dumb phone", I said "dumbphone", as in, "not a smartphone". Its a fancy, if overly pretty, dumbphone. Its not, however, a "smartphone". way too many commas...

To be specific here, what more do you look for in a smartphone?

How about syncing with the most used PIM in the world?
How about a keyboard that a: has some feel to it and b: doesn't take up screen space?
How about being able to add 3rd party software from a vast library of existing titles?
How about data that doesn't require minutes of waiting for the most basic of downloads?

I love how the iPhone incites so much emotion in people - even if they don't have one.

When it comes to the iPhone being classified as a smartphone I think its somewhere in the middle. Its got a hell of a lot more features than your average consumer phone but it does lack some features (and support) taht business users would need. At my office I generally tell people its a great device depending on the work you do. I also have a BB 8800 that my work provides me which has some great features too. T

The iPhone is a great device but for a lot of people but I personally don't think its ready for the workplace yet. I do have a feeling that Apple will release a firmware upgrade with a lot of requested features as soon as a reliable way to unlock the phone comes available. They would kill 2 birds with one stone - locking up the iPhone again while giving people an incentive to upgrade to the latest software.
