hi,
I need to host a quickbooks file over the internet so that two people from different locations are able to view and edit transactions. The file needs to be updated regularly and needs to be secure. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

Can set it up on a dedicated XP Pro workstation, open/forward ports on firewall for Remote Desktop Connection..and allow them to connect (1 at a time) to it. Remote Desktop works well through the thin bandwidth of the internet, and if setup properly, it's quite secure.

If you wish for additional security, setup a VPN server at the host network. Many biz grade routers have this feature these days. Authenticate to the VPN first..and then launch remote desktop.

Drawback of using Remote Desktop to a WinXP pro host..only 1x user at a time, either locally, or remotely.

If you need concurrent use at the same time...either 1x PC for each user (realistically still quite inexpensive) , or...Terminal Server.

sftp or ftp-ssl are the easiest options. Ftp-ssl is very simple to setup with Filezilla Server, if all you need is a minimal server for 2 people, and it runs on Windows. Sftp is very simple to setup if you're using a *nix variant OS.

Accessing Quickbooks over a WAN just does not work. Its painfully slow and problematic.

You need to follow StoneCat's recommendation for a remote desktop scenario if you want to do this.

Alternatively Quickbooks offers a hosted solution where they host the file and allowed secure access via the browser. I have not used this but have been told it works well.

Exactly..you don't run accounting database software of a skinny arse internet pipe or VPN tunnel. Constant corruption of accounting databases isn't..err....something you want to encourage. If you've played with Quickbooks since version 2005 or so...you'll see just how fat and bloated it's gotten. It's not like the old Quickbooks 97...it's gone .NET Framework based.
