Does anyone know how these processors compare in benchmarks, especially for gaming when OCed near the max. I need to get a new rig pretty soon mostly for gaming. I know now is a good time to get the e6320, 965-ds3, and ddr2 but should I wait for quad cores, AMD's too, to come down and get one of them?

If I got a e6320 I would run it at about 3.2Ghz, I know I could push 3.5Ghz with the cooling I'm planning on getting. The cooling in case your interested will be a bit of a project for me as I like to make computer mods. My goal is to get the just about the best air cooling possible. As of now the heatsink of choice is the ultra 120 extreme. I'll be using 120x38mm high speed delta fans which do over 200 CFM (with fan controller of course) and installing an air duct which brings fresh cold air in from outside the case and spits out the hot air through another duct on the other side.

I just don't know how well these new quad cores OC and compare in gaming benchmarks. I'm also kind of interested in what kind of quad cores AMD will offer as AMD has always been more bang for your buck until core 2 duo came out with it's incredible OCing potential.

Well first off. Quad Core processors are here no waiting needs to be done, as a matter of fact the Q6600 just had a pricedrop yesterday which is still going.
Secondly, it's a fine time to buy a C2D processor and DDR2 ram, no worries there. DDR3 is still in it's infancy outside of graphics cards.
Thirdly, "oc'ed near max" is a very wide area. What the max oc for a processor is depends on batch and what kind of cooling you've got going.

But at any rate, at stock speeds the Q6600 will outperform the E6320 at just about anything, more cores and higher clock speeds...

I'll be happy to help, but you need to provide some more information, and preferably some numbers too ;)

Spiderwaffle,

Comparing these 2 CPUs is like comparing bannas to grapes. Theres a world of difference. they arent even in the same class.

If you are on a budget then get the e6320. if you have the money to drop on a q6600 then you should be looking at comparing with an e6850 or e6750.
both those cpus will yield better clocks and start off much faster in stock form.

quads are awesome, but if all you do is game, you dont need it right now. get a faster dual core.

I'm not really interested in stock speeds or getting a faster C2D has they don't OC much better than the e6320. I'm a hardcore OCer so whatever I get will be OCed so I'm only interested in OCing performance. I'm just wondering how these new quads do in gaming benchmarks when OCed. Do many games take advantage of muti-threading? Will a q6600 at 3.4 Ghz do significantly better than a e6320 at 3.2 Ghz? The C2Ds were such a step up from single cores and it would have been totally foolish to buy a single core right before C2Ds went mainstream. I'm wondering if the same could be said for quad cores.

what are better? bananas or grapes :D

oops wrong forum. 2 [H] tabs is a bad thing!

Anyone have a guess as to how long it will take games to optimize to quad cores? I think that's the really significant issue at hand. As of now they aren't optimized nearly enough for it to worth paying 70% more money for a quad. Once they become really optimized and start using multi-threads and take advantage of quads like we've seen in rendering apps, then the increase in benchmark performance is rather significant and it will be worth it.

I can wait a little longer but I need my new rig soon. I'll either get a e6320 now, or wait and get a quad, likely a q6600 or AMD one. I suppose I'll e-mail valve about what their quad core plans are.

Running my G0 at 3GHz on default voltages right now. 3.3GHz seems to work fine too at default voltages. Make what you will of it.

How long do you think it will be until the Barcelona costs around 180-200?

will a 965-ds3 mother board be able take full advantage of a Barcelona or octo-core?

If I can get a MB now that will be ready for a new CPU in a year or so and all I have to do is buy a new CPU that would be nice. Unfortunately I don't think that's going to be the case.
