I want to be able to back up an image of my system to a DVD then restore from the DVD if something goes wrong. What would you guys recommend?

I currently do this using Ghost and BartPE. I have a sysprepped image that takes up about 2.5 GB, in the form of a .gho file. I included Ghost on a BartPE disc, and burned it to a DVD, after making a folder called 'image" on the disc as well, where the .gho file is stored.

I simply boot from the BartPE DVD, run Ghost, and load the image file to the PC.

If you don't want to use BartPE, all you really need on a bootable DVD are two files (aside from the DOS boot files, which Nero loads for you). You need ghost.exe and the whatever.gho file(s).

Same here.
I use this method at work and at home. I have used other software, but ghost+bart's PE gives me more options.

+2 for Acronis True Image. One thing about Acronis is to make sure you are using the latest version as a friend of mine had issues with it not recognizing his SATA HDD until he made a boot disk using the latest version of True Image. He had just got a new AM2 mb so I expect that is what the issue was. With Acronis I use it to create a hidden partition on the HDD and put an image there, it creates a recovery menu when you press F11. I also put an image on an external USB HDD. DVD will work too but it is more of a hassle if you have lots of data to back up.

Boot into DOS with a Win98 floppy boot disk. Ghost is on a DVD with the GHO files and mouse files to initialize the mouse to navigate ghost. Ghost 2003 is probably the best version of ghost around.

The BartPE boot disk on a single DVD with the GHO image is a great idea. Can this be done using Easy Media Creator to create a boot disk and add the GHO files to the same DVD?

Another vote for Acronis true image, its awesome and I'll NEVER go back to Ghost.

The netwroking is simple and works very well, which makes it easier to back up my laptops.

I would be extremely surprised if Easy Media Creator didn't have the same basic options for creating a DOS bootable disc. If so, on the "body" of the disc, just copy the ghost.exe file and the Ghost image file(s).

Excellent responses. Thank you guys.
I'm playing with Ghost for now, but I might give Acronis a try too.
