BF2...worth it?

Ok... So since a good pilot, with a Chinese J-10 jet, on a jet map, fighting against poor pilots, using inferior jets, who don't have any teamwork in the air or ground, will kill some guys easily, the OP shouldn't buy the game? :D

I've been looking for a good game to play lately. I'm still working through FEAR and Far Cry and am enjoying them immensely, but I miss multiplayer action. I've been playing CS and CS:Source for years now and wanna try something different...
play the mod gungame for source? that will ignite revitilization as its better than regular any day! pussies play turn based, deathmatch & the knife is the best action online PERIOD!

No, but there are some minus that shouldn't be overlooked. The OP could buy the game, drop into WAKE ISLAND and find it to be horrible with the poor F-35's against the Chinese air without realizing that it's only a small part of the game and different maps/modes/mods are available.

If the OP is looking for a well balanced air combat game, with a FPS aspect than BF2 might not be for them.

Different strokes, different folks.

Get BF2142, it is far superior.

Preface: I really liked bf2. I was never really into pc fps', and Battlefield 2 essentially turned me around. After playing BF2 for many hours, I eventually switched to infantry only maps, which always left a bad taste in my mouth - the fact that I felt like you basically needed to play antitank whenever a map had vehicles.

That being said, BF 2142 is better in pretty much every way. The unlock system is far better, theres just more stuff to unlock. You can highly customize your kit for how you want to play. Also, i feel like, generally, vehicle whoring has been balanced. While still powerful, vehicles are far less overpowered, and there are just more counters. Furthermore, good squadplay is further emphasized. You get bonus points for helping out your squad, especially if you are within a radius from the squad leader's command. Additionally, squad leaders can drop a beacon that sets a spawn point for both their squad members, and even the leader. Plus, BF2142 has different game types (3 currently!). Long story short, I feel as though BF2142 is just more polished and has better gameplay. After all, it is essentially a mod of BF2, which allowed the team to have more time with the product before it got pushed out the door.

I'm gonna go ahead and call BF2 a classic online, PC, first person shooter for our times. (meaning in the last 3 years). I remember being blown away just playing the Gulf of Oman demo map over and over. Running along, and then a giant jet crashes 100 yards front of you? F*ckin' A, what an awesome game!

As far as infantry with no jets, Special Forces really takes care of that well. A couple classic maps in that expansion.

And yes, if you are just getting into the game you will most likely die a lot on some occasions because these guys have hundreds, if not thousands of hours playing this puppy.

I played BF2 for a long time and when I played 2142...I thought it was terrible, just my opinion.

Its worth it. Plus it wont limit your choices in servers.
Honestly, BF2 was one of the best games I have ever played. It was endless fun.... well that is until I got a widescreen monitor. Then the game went to the FS forums because EA refuses to put out a widescreen game..

i play on my WS monitor...it isnt "true" WS I don't think but it looks fine and works :)

anyway, BF2 is worth it..didn't like BF2142 much, found it slow and aircraft sucky

I didn't buy 2142 but I played the demo. I thought it lacked 'life'. Everything was gray and the sounds lacked punch. I'm sure the unlocks and maps in the retail would make the game deeper but I just didn't care for the overall feel of the game. Different strokes for different folks. ;)

In a way it’s a lot like many online games, it all depends on the server you get on.

I’ve been on servers where admins are no where to be found and many ‘exploits’ are being used, just ruins the game all in all. I haven’t played it in about a year give or take, (mainly because the servers where ripe with people that took advantage of poor coding,) who knows though a friend just picked up a server so I might give it another try…

meh.

for BF2 vs 2142, they both have their good and bad sides. My clan is just starting to get more into 2142. We'll probably switch over within the next 6 months. I found it easy to get right into and pick up fighting. Sure it's taking some time to learn new maps and techniques and learning the new vehicles and unlocks, but it wasn't easy trying to fly a chopper the first time in BF2 either.
Both are quality games, I really love some of the close combat maps in 2142, it's tons of action crammed into a tiny space.

Project Reality v0.6 is Released <- This any good? Anyone playing it?
Point of Existence 2 Mod Friday <- anyone play the beta or anything?

I played a little bit of PR but the spawn times are worse than Insurgency for Source so...

I've played quite a bit of PoE2 and it's a lot of fun.

Here's the current bummer: Stat tracking is not working 100%. EA says they're working on it but it's been a month now and some stats/awards are not updating. Typical EA support, I guess. Of course if you're not into the numbers behind BF2 then it won't matter. ;)

Most of this should have been cleared up a while ago. Try another server if you aren't getting points. I know we have giving points on our server for a couple of weeks now. Last time I played on the ESU server I got nothing.

I hope you enjoy being killed by Airplanes every 10 seconds.
Get 2142, its 100% more balanced thant BF2.

it's been said before, but infantry only kicks butt.

If you are looking to have some fun and learn the ropes, feel free to check out our clan at www.rbkgamers.com. We play pretty well, but don't take it too seriously so we are newb friendly. Some folks take this stuff WAAAY to seriously and it takes the fun out. We do talk a lot of smack, but it's all in good fun. :D You can also look in the server list for =RBK= ESU or HOG. Our guys are usually playing on one of them. Tell them 'Smelly' sent ya.

I do need to get out and play more. I've got 600+ days registered and I'm still a corporal

Most of this should have been cleared up a while ago.

Stuff like time played on a certain army wasn't updating but as luck would have it EA stumbled across the problem yesterday and fixed it. Now all stats/awards/conditions report correctly again. It only took them a month...

And yeah - Inf Only rocks.

Bf2 is awesome. I've had it from day 1, and didn't play it for the first year it came out because it was so buggy. Now everything works nice and smooth, and it's probably the most fun I've had playing an online game.

I/O Karkand servers are where it's at. I got quite sick of the vehicle junkies.

Stats weren't working for a couple of weeks back, but as of mid last week, 100% of my stuff is being recorded. I posted on the EA stat thread with my info so I don't know if that's what fixed it.

It's worth more than $20 for the amount of game play you get out of it. I've been playing for a year and I still play every day or other day.

It's the only FPS I've been hooked since Unreal Tournament 99.

Karkand rocks, especially 32 player with a 64 player map size! We run that, Ja-la-la-la-la-la-bad and Sharqi most of the time in our rotation. We also ONLY do Infantry Only. I hates da vehicles!

whats ip to said server?

whats ip to said server?

69.74.45.213

It also shows up on a search if you just use 'rbk' It's 24/7 but gets most of it's use on the weekends and evenings. Otherwise look for =RBK= tags at ESU or HOG. When they get 6, they often start a game on ours.

whats the diff?

PoE2 plays more like BF2 does while PR is a complete 180.

In PR you usually die with 1 shot, you don't respawn for 45 seconds, flags take quite a bit longer to cap and teamwork is required. You can't survive on your own in PR like you can in BF2. If you haven't you might as well give it a shot because it's incredible to see how people can take a game and make it so totally different. ;)

PoE2 is kind of like BF2 with incredibly different maps. There's jungle maps, snowy maps, etc... There's some vehicle changes/additions and kit changes. It takes a bit of time to learn the nuances of PoE but it's a lot of fun and easier to step into than PR. The audio is awesome in PoE, too. Give it a try - free ain't a bad price to pay.

Both mods are good at what they do so it's up to your personal preference to find which one is more fun.

here's a vote against BF2... if you like vehicles, forget about this game... it is an Air Sim with player targets. The entire game is dominated by air power. On-top of everything, that air-power is overpowered... you *CANNOT* kill a helicopter with a single shot from a TANK cannon for one. If your team does not have a person as equally obsessed about getting into air combat as the other team, you have already lost. Air power is everything. Personally I did not like the pseudo-sim nature of the air vehicles, so I didn't fly because it wasn't fun...

On top of everything there was a horrible controls layout that wouldn't even overwrite a key if you wanted to use it, you had the find the command that had the key you wanted, change the key it was bound to, just so you could go to the original command you were trying to tie to that specific button to do so. Add to that the several buttons you could not use *at all* like I think it was ctrl or alt, one of the two or both, you couldn't use.

If a patch breaks something, even if it makes the game unplayable for your, do not expect a fix for MONTHS! ... if you have a problem now and you cant figure it out, dont expect much help from the tech support who rehash the same garbage fixes and direct you to un-tested, un-supported, user-suggested fixes on other forums.

Game has been out for years and still crashes for me at random for no reason. I stopped playing over a year ago and threw it in my closet next to Earth & Beyond.

I play BF2 regularly... haven't had a crash in a year, seems stable enough. I'm not all that good, but have fun. Have lots of people I know that play, so it's better when I'm on a server running around having FUN that way.
Played many mods for it - some good, some bad. Currently have Sandbox on our server we use for mods - did some beta testing for v5 of Nations at War too.
The ranking / awards is an amusement factor, and the "not even close" to real world physics and damage makes it fun in many regards.

I too hate the guys that do noting but bomb the shit out of you. When the map changes to one with no planes, they are gone most of the time. Or, I do what I can to find amusing ways to take them out... like slamming a jet into them, or timing a jump and C4ing them in mid air... (yes, it can be done... took me an hour to get it right ... lololol).

I take it for what it is... a game and make the best of it and enjoy playing and finding new and amusing ways to take out the other guy.

It is a great game... hacen't played in a while but might just install again this weekend!!! The expansion ( the european one) is only good for the upgrades. I like the medic upgrade. I'm pretty decent with it if Ido say so myself :)

http://bf2s.com/player/63347443/

Personally I play in mostly maps with no vehicles or with for sure NO Planes. Choppers are a bit cheesy but at least it's easier to knock them down and to hide form.

Yeah the Euro weapons are pretty cool. I also love the medic's FAMAS rifle. The support and engineer kit also has some cool Euro weapons. Great Wall is an awesome map especially when played infantry only. Unfortunately there's only a handful of servers even running the EF pack anymore. :(

UNTIL I CAN RUN AND THROW C4 AGAIN....

I will not play.

Hah sike. I'd be on more if my PC didn't suck ass

All I can say is that to a new player with none of the preconceived negative experiences you've had pre patch 1.41, that post doesn't really ring relevant. I'm one of those who didn't play it until this year, and none of the issues you've listed are really prevalent.

I will conceit that the air vehicles are overpowered and shooting them down is a pain in the ass... which why there exists a filter option for 'no vehicles' and there are a ton of infantry only servers. Many people probably feel the same as you do about the unbalancing act that occurs when you introduce air into the game.

/side note/ That said I've gotten my air defense badge a couple of times over. On the maps with the battleship on the USA side, most enemy pilots are so unused to anybody manning that thing that you get quite a few freebies just because they weren't paying attention.

Then it becomes a test of will against the smartasses who think they are untouchable to anything AA related who either don't know or forgot long ago that that cannon takes a long time to heat up and can fire 6 missiles without reloading.

Eventually they give it up.

I was a BF2 junkie, and even hassled EA until they gave me another key for it after my wife threw out my game manual in a bout of insanity. HOWEVER, I'm loving the BF2142 demo now!! :D

Demo  ? The games been out for months now! Go buy it, it kicks ass.

I just played the 1.41 patch yesterday, after not having touched BF2 for over a year. The core gameplay hasn't changed. Here's my opinion about the game:

Air power > everything else. There are balance problems between ground AA and jets, and even between the jets themselves (J-10 > F-35). If your team lacks a competent jet pilot, you will get owned from the air.

Infantry combat is still awful. Infantry has very limited mobility, removing the possibility of evasive maneuvering (besides bunny hopping), making infantry firefights go something like this:

1. Go prone
2. Spam bullets at target
3. Wait for random number generator to decide the fight

There are some small variations, but that sums up infantry fighting. Most engagements occur at a range where your weapon's bullet spread is wider than your target's silhouette, so basically you are at the mercy of the random number generator. It's this quality that makes the game so popular, I think; BF2 levels the playing field between the skilled and unskilled by taking pinpoint accuracy out of the equation. There are ways to improve the hit percentage, but all it really amounts to is taking single shots or small bursts. Very little mouse movement is involved.

Grenade spamming is comical; everybody starts with several, and they can be tossed ridiculous distances. Infantry only mode Karkand maps consist of everybody spamming nades while being constantly resupplied by the support players. It's simply the most effective way of killing the enemy.

I harp on the poor infantry gameplay because there aren't enough vehicles for everybody to get one. So unless you can whore a vehicle, you will be infantry. The teamplay aspects somewhat make up for the flaws of infantry combat, but not enough to actually make it fun.

I could go on, but I won't. There are better multiplayer games out there than BF2.
