Well, my brother gave me this Pocket PC and it's in great condition, i'm thinking, what am i gonna do with it? Pocket PC has been obsolete (for what i know) PDA phone is now better...

So what do you guys think i should do with this Pocket PC? looks like my brother barely used it.. any suggestions?

It's a PDA, you do the things you'd do on a PDA I guess. I've owned an iPAQ in recent years, a Palm TX even more recently, and my Wife has a Sony CLIE nowadays. The iPAQ wasn't Wi-Fi ready, the Palm TX was, and the CLIE isn't, so I used the TX for surfing out and about. The Wife uses the CLIE for note taking, keeping appointment data for doctors, etc.

Some are useful, some aren't. You can always sell it, someone will take it off your hands for a few bucks.

I had a X30 and used it for skype and terminal services for bit before selling it. There are some uses for one however for I felt I could use the money more than the device so I sold it.

The 802.11 standard has WEP as the basic backbone of encryption for security, it's a native function of all access points regardless of what they're using. If they fall under the 802.11 specifications, WEP will always be allowed, so that information is false. WPA is the newer encryption (as well as WPA2) and as such is preferred since WEP has been shown countless times to have a "crack" in its armor, so to speak.

Any access point ever made will allow a WEP connection.

thanks for the inputs... i guess this PDA is really limited when it comes to connection :(

The X3i is the X3 that offers 11b Wi-Fi support. The X3 you have has an SDIO slot (SD memory card support or SD Input/Output support for Wi-Fi/webcam/etc support) so you can always pick up a SDIO Wi-Fi card like this one by SanDisk, but there are other manufacturers of such SDIO Wi-Fi cards also.

Hope this helps... if you decide to get rid of it, lemme know, I might be interested. :)

...........so that information is false..............

Sure. Any access point can be set up for WEP encryption. But do I want to roll my router back from WPA to WEP just to be able to connect my PDA.

I have used the search on this one and came up dry. No sarcasm here. If you know how to do this, I'd be happy to hear it.

If you need wpa support, you can pick up a program called Odyssey Access Client. It's pay for software, but is amazing. I believe it also came on some of the newer x50 Axims. It is basically the wireless manager that should have been built into windows mobile in the first place.

do you have any links for this? I might be interested on this if it's not that expensive...

Before you purchase Odyssey, you might want to check the Dell CD for it. For awhile they were including it with their PDA's (my wife has the X30H).

As an alternative (if Odyssey is to expensive) there's: Hitchhiker. I've never used it, but its received some decent reviews, and best of all its free.

You also might want to check out this site: http://www.aximsite.com/. it has excellent forums & tutorials, including "What can I do with my Axim?". Last but not least, be sure to check out the freeware starting point thread.

I'm thinking of just for internet browsing when i'm away from PC. But first, i need to know to connect this on internet.. there some good links that was posted here so i might try those..

dont know about GPS Nav. It might be a little slower than your regular Nav.

Linux.... i'm not sure of..

Linux is a negative, but there is a lot of support for Windows mobile, and a very large development community. Pick up a 1 or 2 Gb SD and you can get a large number of games; classics like the original AoE and Sim City 2k, or ones made just for the ppc market (John Romero started a company called monkey stone that makes great puzzle games). You can also rip your favorite movie or TV shows down and watch em on the run with tcpmp. Surf arround the windows mobile forums that are around and see what suites your fancy.

i use my axim for only two things:

playing games when im on the crapper.

and use it as a mp3 player. pick up a sd card and voila, mp3 player. unless you've already got another player :)

you'll find some nice games for it if you hunt around. i enjoy lode runner, pac man, and solitaire currently.

GPS is awesome on the PocketPC. I had a HP iPAQ 2215 that was perfect. I had a dash mount for it and everything. The GPS was dead accurate and updated tracking every 1/3 sec or so. I was using Microsoft Streets and Trips 2006 that came bundled with the GPS receiver. When my speedometer ended, I could see how fast I was going in the car... I also took it on an airplane trip to Florida. It showed altitude and speed, and I could track the plane to see where we were at. :p

wait...your allowed to use GPS on the airplane?

GPS is recieve only. Also its very common/required on aircraft these days. Except for takeoff/landing when everything gets turned off, shouldn't be a problem.

No reason why not - you'll need a GPS receiver, though. I'm not sure how you'd go about connecting it unless it's compatible with one of the card slots.

I have an old Axim, myself. I'd love to know more about the GPS functionality.

They make all sorts of receivers for GPS compatible with the PocketPC. They have bluetooth, ones that connect via serial cable to the sync cable, CompactFlash adapters, etc. The one I had connected with the sync cable type adapter.

do you guys know what kind of USB connector i need for this PDA? you know, to connect to my PC usb port.. :(

Yea, I've ordered tons of shit from there before. It is pretty fast shipping too.
