I'm trying to get my new build (in sig) going. First I had trouble with my ram not posting so I put different ram in and changed timings and voltage. Now, I have a completely new problem. I don't think my mobo is seeing my dvd drive. It's the first boot device and when I go to boot up to load windows, it says insert proper boot device or something like that. What the hell's wrong? I am so pissed it's not even funny.

Also, how in the world are you supposed to fit a 2.2Mb BIOS file on a 1.44Mb floppy to update the BIOS?      How am I supposed to go about updating the BIOS?

when I used to have that board.. I got the same exact problem as you have

apparently this board comes with a very buggy and unstable bios

you need to update it
lucky for me.. in my hard drive I had the previous OS installation and it booted to windows

so I updated the bios through the Asus update utility

in your case you need to create a bootable cd.. start the pc with your dvd or cd drive being first priority and flash the bios from there

after you flash the new bios.. the board becomes very stable..

I have no clue what you are tying to flash but it sure as heck is not a bios file.

Version 0404 2007/06/21 update
Description P5K Deluxe Release BIOS 0404
Support new CPUs. Please refer to our website at: http://support.asus.com.tw/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx
File Size 990.79 (KBytes)

Maybe its time you took a little break from working on it.

oops the OP is exactly correct. when downloaded the file expands to 2.2MB and certainly will not fit on a floppy. Totally FUBAR

^^ actually thats compressed size..
the actual size is close to 2.2 mb

Are you trying to boot up w/a Vista upgrade disc? I'm not sure if they're bootable like XP ones were or might've been... If the BIOS sees the DVD drive then the mobo is recognizing it though.

Most ASUS boards let you load BIOS files in a variety of ways (CD, USB key, floppy, Windows, etc), read the manual.

You probably aren't making a bootable CD properly. Do you have a USB flash drive laying around? There's a tutorial here that'll let you use it rather than wasting a CDR.

With Asus you don't need to make the usb thumb drive bootable. Just put the bios file on the usb thumb driver and run the flash program in the bios.

I don't even think it's seeing my dvd drive at all. It's the same dvd drive and windows disk that I used in my previous builds. Worked fine then. I'll try the flash drive tomorrow. But even if that works, I don't think my dvd drive is being read. In the BIOS under the boot priority menu I have
Atapi CD-rom 1st. It's not a Cd-rom drive, it's dvd. I remember my last system showed it as a DVD-R/W drive in the BIOS.

The boot priority list isn't where you should be looking to see if it was detected. Does it show up in the list of detected devices when the machine posts? Does it show up in the "Standard Device Setup" menu, or whatever the equivalent is for that board? Even if it doesn't show up at all I'd flash the BIOS before calling DOA on the board.

good luck.. i use to have that board but it gave me alot of problems so i returned it after trying 2 boards... now i have the gigabyte

Is this dvd drive using a SATA or EIDE connector? If SATA which slot (0,1,2,3,4,5) and see if it is detected in the bios at the sata section. If EIDE, is Jmicron detecting it? A good indication is during boot up. You should see a Jmicron screen that displays the detected drives along with the line "Press any key to continue..."

For the bios update, use EZ-flash. Look at the manual for more info.

i thnk his problem is just that he did not setup the boot order in his bios guys... i know the p5k is buggy, but it still works when its shipped, this is more user error than anything else.

also, for flashing on an ASUS board its very very easy, just put a usb drive with the bios file (you do nto need to make it bootable) go into the bios, and goto tools

then do the ez flash tool and select the bios file from there and yer set.

Well, what order should it be in? I have it cd, raid. I think it's all board error myself.

I updated the BIOS, just waiting for some ram since the cmos was cleared when i flashed it.
