Hey guys, my grandparents are wanting internet to their computer in the workshop exactly 100FT (feet) away from the modem in their house.

I am wondering if you experts here know what we could get to achieve this distance. I went to radioshack and with the Wireless-G router and long range antennas, they could only get me 50Feet which isn't enough.

Do you guys know of any website that would offer an antenna to connect to a D-Link or Linksys router if possible and get me a 100Foot radius for around 250$ or so?

Please help me out!
Thanks,

Well a cantenna would work well connected to a DIR-655 and a good wireless card.

The OP needs to tell what conditions there are between the two points, as that is the most important part. You can get any router and antenna combo you want, but it's not going through 20 trees on the way. I'm guessing there are some obstacles between the house and workshop, since 100ft is no big deal with line of sight for any WAP.

The only thing in between the shop and the house is a Gazebo and a fence. The modem is right next to the outer wall of the house facing the shop, and the computer in the shop is on the wall facing the house.

If you all could provide me with some links to purchase what I need that would be great.
Thanks

If the router is any good, and there is no metal walls then it should just work.

A decent router, a decent Wi-Fi card in the desktop, and a high gain antenna preferably 7dB or better should be able to cover 100 feet without breaking a sweat, even through solid rock encased in steel.

I'd think based on the description that was provided something is missing here. I've never had any Wi-Fi equipment that couldn't do 50 feet, ever, and that's from the days of yore when 11b was just hinted at becoming a standard and with test equipment from several manufacturers. Not being able to do 50-100 feet suggest something is seriously wrong someplace, either with the hardware itself or the antennas in use, etc. Could be a power output issue (a lot of routers and Wi-Fi cards are not set for proper power output by default, more often than not).

A good going through all the settings involved should resolve issues, and I mean the router configuration as well as the settings for the Wi-Fi card in Device Manager, etc.

If necessary, the aforementioned Cantenna (too expensive really for a glorified Pringles can and antenna jack with some cable and chrome painting/labeling) would help considerably in such a setup. If you can build a Pringles cantenna yourself, build two and save yourself a shitload of money in the process - and get some Pringles to eat while you're building 'em too. :)

Good luck...

my two cents...
thiers something missing here... 100 ft with nothing in the way should work properly.....thiers interference somewhere i would suggest putting them 2 feet apart to make sure the connections work first.....secondly. thier good up to 100m..... so 100 ft shouldnt be an issue try connecting to 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 see if you can access the router first maybe your ineternet is jacked up......
