Is it just me or are these new notebooks quite nice looking and cheap?

I just wish they offered linux.

im going to place my order tomorrow.

C2D T5470 1.6GHz 800MHz FSB
Vista Home Basic
15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA LCD
1GB DDR2 667MHz
120G 5400RPM SATA Hdd
8X CD/DVD Burner
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8600M GT
802.11g Wi-Fi Mini Card

$768

this is the best deal ever. this blows the xt5000t that i was just about to buy today. plus its black. dont really like the silver on the insperon line

why wouldn't it be? a 1.6 dual-core should handle quite a bit of applications/light-gaming. this is not a gamer rig if thats what you're intended to use it for :p

i agree the new vostro line does look sexy. But what i don't get ... they don't have DVI out? If you look at the pictures of the vostro all it has is vga-out and s-video

well, the 8600GT does intrigue me, these days it seems to be quite easy to get a lappy for less then a grand which is quite game capable (a few years back you had to really work to find a sub grand lappy, and you would end up with SiS integrated shit)

i just hope that by the time my current lappy needs to be replaced (Still easily 3 years to go though), the same has happened to 12 inch laptops, i do love that form factor for its portability, but its nigh on impossible to find one with decent graphics

Yeah, the new Vostros are really a good deal. I should have held off building my E4300/X1950Pro SFF desktop for a few months and gotten this instead. The damn thing cost me $950 to build including monitor! This would save me so much trouble moving a computer back and forth between school for not a big performance hit.

This has been a gripe of mine on the Latitude series as well, even the newer x30 series doesn't have DVI. The only way for people to connect a monitor to it is to use VGA (which I hate forcing people to do), or to get a dock for $250.

For some reason they also only put one DVI and one VGA on the dock, which means dual monitors are kinda "meh". Even the XPS line does this. Is it so hard to just put two DVI ports and send converters?

hell, even dells highest end professional laptops (sitting behind a 3.5 month old precision M65 here) only has VGA out on the machine itself. Luckily though the company saw fit for everyone to work with a dock and an external TFT, so i run the external screen though DVI.

I seem to be the only one (out of ~10 employees) using both the laptop and external display though, i would have prefered symmetric dual screen, but this is pretty sweet as well

will the Vostro 1400 be a good traveling notebook? Vostro 1400 = 1.53" x 13.13" x 9.61 thats pretty small? right..

A simple dock is less then 20$ on ebay.
A robust dock with a pci slot is 50$ and lets you add a card with two DVI outputs.

Sorry, I'm not going to be buying people a used dock off ebay for company use. Most don't mind forking over the extra cash to get a new one with a warranty because of how much it actually helps.

I was quoting new item prices, just to a show a third option.
If people can pay 5 times the price of an item for warranty, then good for them, but not everyone has the money or will to do that.

We just got 3 1100 tester/loaners, and they're decent looking machines.
I'll be checking them out Friday or Monday.

Some deals on them now. About $599 for a decent system.

how about that GS card though. Good enough for WOW or SupCom without the jacked up rez?

if we're talking about the 8400GS, id say wow should run just dandy (considering many people play wow on their macbooks, with intel integrated shit), supcom might be a whole different story, sure it will run, but id say you would have to go pretty low on settings

I changed my order, I went with the 8600GT and Intel wireless card instead of the Dell. I also ordered 2 gigs of RAM off Dell for $78 and a Belkin bag instead of a Dell bag. I also switched to Vista from XP for DX10 support. Atleast it's Basic and not bloated with media center and crap I don't want/need. Total came to $1,060 after tax. I doubled what I was initially looking to spend on a laptop:eek:

I see these are aimed at "Small Business" - can anybody order one, or do I have to have a business?

Thanks.

you can call dell up and ask then to upgrade to preminum. i think its $39 to do so

I'd rather have basic. I hate bloat, I don't want media center/"premium games"/tablet pc crap. If Microsoft stopped trying to control people and gave me the option to deselect crap when installing I might go with Premium for aero, but it's not that big of a deal to me.

It's not it's just prettier which on a mobile pc, I wouldn't really want. I'd want my lappy as fast as it can be. That being said, DAMN these are good deals.

Is it me or does these vostro laptops look like the same old inspiron e14-15-1705 series painted black??

WOW these are GREAT deals...i might have to reconsider buying a Dell D630 this October with my steep University discount...

They are the new Inspiron 1520 etc painted all black. They also have a kevlar keyboard lining to protect from spills and what, full magnesium alloy casing instead of just the lid and a different audio chip (from what I found on notebookreview.com)

I was interested in the 17", but it seems none of them has a docking port. Sucks.

Just bought the votro v1500, c2d 1.6ghz, 1gb ram 120 gb hdd, 8400gm, vista basic, 724 shipped and after tax.....wow, and it had free shipping I just got hit hard with tax from California. But sadly the ETA is August 6th

Looks pretty nice. I was considering a m1330, but the price point on this one is pretty astounding. Although I think the features and portability of the m1330 is gonna win me over.

Just get similar features on this one, and run with the 14"...i'm sure 1 inch is not going to break anyone. it may be a pound or two heavier but is it worth the price difference? IDK myself but something you could look into
