Could a x850 XT PE 256MB handle the native resolution (1680x1050) of a 20" monitor in games without lowering the graphics settings too much? I have decent framerates in games with fairly high settings on 1280x1024, but I don't really know how far I can push the resolution.

I have a non PE X850XT, and an FW900 monitor (widescreen CRT). I think you'll have a little difficulty running the latest games at that res (medium settings would be ok for some stuff but it's pretty subjective). I remember playing FEAR at 1440x900 with medium-high settings (no soft shadows or shit like that) and the framerates were still pretty sub-par. Oblivion was even worse, but that was probably due to my A64 3000+. Also, 256mb is a little weak for AA at that res. SM 2.0 doesn't help either. It's probably time for you to upgrade your card.

My old 6800GS managed to run 1680x1050 moderately well. You should have similar results.

I have an X850XT on my 22' Acer. I should've upgraded for this monitor, but i'm blah blah with my car so i'm forced to run this thing for now. Um, as far as gaming goes, you should be okay on medium settings like another OP said. I play my BF2 on 1600x1200 with medium settings and i get occasional slow downs and such. No AA. AA kills this card.

It'll handle older games fairly well at that rez with high details. New games, not so much. In fact, new games are gonna kill you at that rez with that card. Sux.

running my x850xt pe on my 20.1 benq lcd no probs!:D

Is it possible to change the format to 4:3 on 16:10/16:9 displays, so that movies in 4:3 format don't get stretched?

Pretty sure this depends on the monitor, but I'd think any decent one should have settings for that. Just check up specifically for whichever monitors you're considering.
