Heat pipes seem badly designed

Every CPU cooler I've seen so far using heat pipes seem badly designed, but I never see this get questioned in the reviews.

For example, the average cooler with heat pipes is designed basically the same way, put the cpu block on the bottom, have the heat pipes extend upwards at either a 90 degree angle or one bank at 45 degree angles, the other opposite. (like a V8)

This works very well, as long as your cpu is horizontal, as with desktop cases, but how many people have those types? Don't most of us have tower cases?

Heat pipes work by boiling a liquid and it then condensing, running back down to the cpu side. Horizontally this works, vertically it doesn't without a wick inside the pipe. (As far as I'm aware of)

Does anyone know of any reviews where a cpu cooler with heat pipes is tested vertically and horizontally to see the difference?

Maybe I'm greatly mistaken, I don't claim to be an expert at these things.

As far as I'm aware most heatpipes used in cpu coolers DO have a wicking substance inside them.

But I read that while the wick works, it doesn't work anywhere near as well as gravity.

A proper pipe will have a wick inside of it and it wont make a performance difference whether it is inverted or pointed in any direction.

Cheap heatpipes you would see a difference, but the expensive ones or proper ones, wont.

aye the issue has been overcome.

Easy enough to test, carefully record temps with coretemp and then just lay the machine on its side and check again.
