PC Gamer takes a crap on Penny Arcade

The Vede needs to go back to the Hard Stuff. I'm still not used to him as EiC.

Anyone else miss Rob Smith? Even Morris and Whitta were good EiC's.

I sure as hell do. I miss the old guys.

Before cancelling my subscription last year, I noticed a significant decline in the quality of their game reviews. Sad to see them go downhill like this.

It's probably me, but I don't Penny Arcade funny. Not a bit. On the contrary, I like reading Ctr Alt Delt, I think it has real humour, and it could be a coincidence, but the main character has also brown hair and it's about video games. But the difference is that it's funnier.

I can agree with you on that one. I think their stuff is much funnier than Penny Arcade's.

Wha... are you guys kidding? CAD is terrible art wise and writing wise... they couldn't deliver a joke properly if their lives depended on it. (See their Starcraft 2 comic... :I )

I picked up a PC Gamer the other day, and the damn magazine didn't even hit 100 pages.

What a waste of money.

I was kind of confused when I read Vederman's editorial so I'm glad to see other people commenting on it. I thought it was a bit much to have five different PA covers but still, it seemed interesting and kind of funny.

So I read Vederman's editorial and thought... um, WTF? Didn't you just give these guys FIVE different covers? What's with the complete lack of enthusiasm?

Now I understand. It's just douche-baggery.

Wow, that was truly awful. Humor should be subtle, if they have to explain the punchline in the joke they've failed completely.

OP and Scott Kurtz need to work on their sarcasm detector. Vederman compared PA to Garfield. Oh noes, the sky is falling. Now I don't find PA funny, not even a little bit (all comics are lame imo), but even if I did it would make no difference what some guy in some magazine said in some paragraph. Why freak out about this?

OTOH, thevede does suck, and PCG started sucking ever since that douchebag started being the EIC. I never understood why, he was probably the worst man for the job. What other good pc gaming magazines are out there?

Wow, I just checked that one out myself. It would have been funny if they didn't think I was too stupid to recognize the not-so-subtle shape of cock-and-balls.

I don't particularly like Penny Arcade. And I stopped buying PC Gamer about 5 years ago. Not enough content for the money.

By the time you get the mag the info in it is outdated.

golly.. I haven't heard THAT one before  ...that's not true for everything, and unless your some kind of 'any news or info older than a week is useless' geek then mags can be entertaining & informative.. it all comes down to the person.. I subscribe to gfw and maxpc so that i have something to read on the shitter and while im waiting for my oil changes lol.. but reviews on gadgets, games, hardware, are all still relevant to me cause it's not like any of those suddenly become obsolete after a month, don't a lot of people WAIT for hardware and games to get into the hands of early adopters and reviewers anyway so they know if it's worth the investment or not? so there are plenty of pro's for mags.. especially for those not totally on top of every bit of news on the net.. sorry for the derail lol but I couldn't help but reply.. :)

CAD was funny, like, three years ago. Now it's just a bunch of long story panels which all areabout Ethan being crazy. Often it never has anything to do with games, and when it does it's more like an illustrated blog post. I think he really ran the strip into the ground by making Ethan's eccentricity the subject of all his jokes. Now he just doesn't have it anymore. Even worse I don't think he'll ever get better again because he's let his fan boys go to his head.

Non sequitur humor is an art, and I think CAD's author has forgotten that. He's way, way to heavy handed with it.

I've enjoyed PC Gamer through the years but my appreciation of it has waned lately. I think this year will by my last subscription. There is a new(er) magazine on the market that I like to read when I'm otherwise indisposed (aka on the toilet). http://www.playmagazine.com/

Very well done, artistically speaking.

I enjoy Penny-Arcade. Sometimes its not funny but mostly cause I don't know about all games and they touch on lots of stuff. But I find it very funny other times.
This is about what is expected from every comic strip.

As far as the article...the guy at PvP wrote a huge thing on it and PA wrote a small comment. I think it was kind of harsh and I think it was a very sarcastic way of trying to be funny while still meaning what he said.
But its true, looks like PCG is using PA to sell issues and milking it for all its worth, which is to be expected.

I think this happened a month ago or something:p Just saw this thread though, hahaa

Whatever

The editorial was fine, in fact it was dead on point. PA is sad and very unfunny little monkey. If the other parts of their salacious story are true then shame on PC Gamer but as for PA being like Garfield, etc, bravo.

What he said!

I subscribe to GFW, PCGamer, and Maximum pc plus surf the web. They all have their place. You can get subscriptions for these for $12 a year so its not like its costing you a fortune, pocket change. :p

people actually think penny arcade is funny? those dudes are so fuckin corny its not even funny. i listened to a podcast of them once and they remind me of those nerdy ass pimply faced kids in some of my class who's one bully away from slittin their wrists

Funny is and always has been, a matter of personal taste.. What does your opinion that PA is not funny have to do with PCG being a pack of overly full colostomy bags imho??
If PCG thought PA was irrelevant or not funny why bother with inviting them and pulling a stunt more suitable for 12 year olds than adults.. Were they trying to be funny? I don't know, but I stopped reading their rag a couple years ago.. The articles seemed more and more like adverts aimed at 10 to 15 year olds than actual articles..

After reading page after page of this stuff I will say that I love PC Gamer and it has kept me from buying some crappy games that look good. It has also turned me on some great games I normally would not try.

I find the reviews to be objective and fun. I like the mag and have a subscription and will continue to read and support it.

Whomever started this thread must really love Penny Arcade cause the article was not bad. I think you should focus your energy on something positive like leveling a new Character to 70 in WOW or something and leave PC Gamer to its business. :D

Just a thought.

KFH

yeah dood. PA is a panty waste. I dont think ive even seen a comic that has made me smirk. I applaud pcgamer for ripping into them. They are only popular because there are some pastey nerds with boils the size of silver dollars snorting away at their clearly high level of nerdy comedic value. Its like the slashdot crowd looks up to them as gods. Its pretty pathetic. Its the same kinda cool as being the 28 year old guy who drives a shitty car and can pick up any 13 yr old at the middle school due to that.

MAN. god forbid someone do something cool. do something cool and you get fucking lambasted on the webernet by asshattery.

take a look at childs play and that's all you need to know about why PA is popular.

PC gamer may appeal to the new PC user, but for those of us who grew up with the magazine, we kept growing, the magazines have not.
If I see another $15 magazine telling me that the new and improved way to supercharge your PC is to "defrag"...my heads gonna implode.

They "reviewed" the 8800GTS in the july issue, guess what settings they used for testing? "4x anisotropic filtering and full-screen anti-aliasing cranked to 16x!":D :D :D

Just because they have a good charity doesn't mean that they don't spout crap.

PA has a fanatical fan base because they take one side on things and then make snarky ass comments about it.

Take a look around their forums and the cult like behavior should anybody go against the holy word.

Plus the overly verbose blog posts don't help the situation.

Sounds to me like you guys are just offended because someone dissed your 'sacred' Penny Arcade. Very childish to hate someone for disagreeing with you. Yeah, so some dude hates Penny Arcade, is that a reason to bash him?

Yeah... honestly, I read the article when it came out and didn't see a problem with it, either. I'm actually kind of happy the editor felt okay expressing his not-completely-enamored status with PA comics in general, even though he noted that they are funny and he likes a lot of their comics. What I got out of it was that he was (lightly) ripping on fanboys.

I've got a cheap/free subscription - I buy them when they're free or $4.00 for a year or something - and I do enjoy the magazine in general. There does seem to be a small place for print magazines, even though it's somewhat forced by the magazines and game developers - they often get info that nobody else does online. Things like the newest PCG magazine, with pictures and notes of more Starcraft 2 Protoss units and what they do - pretty obviously from firsthand accounts/experience that wasn't anywhere else on the internet. It's pretty amazing that they're the only ones with that info, given that they must have picked it up a month ago.

But yeah, it only works when game developers give them that info ahead of time and withhold it from everybody else. Similarly, there's an awesome multi-interview about Crysis in the last Play magazine - they interviewed something like 4 or 5 people within Crytek about the game.

I love PA and I would love to go to PAX. As an artist I've seen PA work turn into a great art style and I think their since of humor is right up my ally. If I don't crack up at a comic, I at least get a chuckle. As for PCGamer, I could care less. I stopped buying and reading gaming magz with Nintendo Power.

^And hell at least Nintendo Powers still worth reading!

I have no idea why they'd do this. All it does is give them bad press. I support what PA does and still find the comics quite entertaining, they started off like any webcomic and grew and earned the status they have now. It just boggles me why someone would attack them. Who is PCG trying to impress? Jack Thompson? Because they sure aren't impressing gamers.

Some the guys back a few pages need to get a life..I never thought I'd say that...but I can't help myself...Seriously..I actually feel a little jealous...I wish I had nothing more important to spend my time bitching about.

I started reading PCG back in August of 2002, and I agree, the magazine has taken a major turn since Vede became EIC, but I wouldn't say the magazine has become garbage.

Personally I still like their previews and reviews. Ever since I was exposed to [H] though I don't bother with their hardware 'reviews'.

Meh, I don't get what the big deal is either. I subscribed to the mag last year after not reading it for a couple of years and I do agree that it isn't as good as it use to be, but the vede was just expressing his opinion.

You must not leave home much. :p

Magazines have their place:
On the crapper
On the train / subway.
On a plane (because those in-flight moves are soooo good.)
Dr's office
Waiting at the DMV
In jail (umm, scratch that one. . .)

You must not get out much. So do Smartphones.

Sorry but i dont really understand how Vede took huge pot shots at PA. He said he found them funny and talented ...wow those are terrible words and completely offensive

Seriously PA fans are the most over sensitive bunch of fanboys in history. Yes PA is great for its charity work and they do make a funny comic sometimes but come on relax and get off the high horse. Pcgamer offered a cover ..a bunch of them. The editor made a joke and also tried to explain that not every game on the cover has to come from a big name developer and because of that the mainstream reader shouldn't pass judgement cause the cover doesnt feature Doom 4 or Half-Life 3 and tons of great indie games are worth the mainstream attention. PA gets offended (not sure why , they should have understood what he was trying to say more than anyone else) PVP gets highly offended and rights a blog talking about his dislike for the editor and how the mag has turned to shit since Vede took over.

Gotta love how over sensitive people can blow a issue from the earth to pluto in seconds.

Caution: Drama.
Blogs, magazines, and comics, lol.

This doesn't affect anyone in their right mind, does it?

I don't really see what the big fuss is all about (yes, I know about the incident)
