iPhone impressions

^While it may be, go watch the stress test PC mag did & see what they did to make it stop working. You will be very surprised.

I hope you all like your iPhone and it's not a pos. Hopefully it will last for over 3 years. I rec. everyone get a extended damage warranty. Seems like it very easy to drop when you're drunk or whatever.

PC Mag threw it into a purse with keys, tried to scratch it with keys, dropped it repeatedly onto carpet and concrete, etc.

And I imagine there will be a slew of protective sleeves, etc available too.

how's the battery life? I listen to a lot of music and not just the 5 min songs.. i'm talking about 2 hour trance sets which consumes more power. Like realistically (and i'm not talking about turning off various functions like apple did for their tests) how much can you listen/watch movies and talk? is it going to last me a full day or will I have to charge at my desk every 5 hours?

It lasts for up to 22 hours if your using the ipod feature .... not bad imo .. thats with wifi and everything turned on (bluetooth might have been off though). I believe the test was done by NYTimes making it a "real world" test. Apple seems to be fairly accurate with their claims.

If your fiddleing with it during the process I would expect a shorter time ... but I have not had a problem with it. I've been playing music with it all morning at work today (roughly 3.5 hours or so) and still show full battery.

Still no word on setting your own custom ringtones right? How about tethered mode? ie in a pinch could you tether it to a laptop and have the laptop communicate with edge via the iPhone?

Well from what I understand, they left out 3g support so you can only use the internet where there is wifi. So no point in Teathering it unless your laptop or computer doesn't have wireless... Would that even work though?

no, it has internet support through edge - the whole point of the device is internet on the go!

Ok thank you for clearing that up for me. I thought it was the dumbest thing to have that with only wifi support lol. Still afraid of only having touch screen on it. Deffinately would get the warranty on it.

I don't understand where you're getting 300MB from. Let's make the number left over a nice round 7.25GB, that means there's 3/4GB taken up. If you round a GB to 1,000MB, then 3/4 of that is 750MB. I know I've done some rounding, but I don't see how the number used is anywhere near 300MB used (even though 700+MB seems huge for this device)

Well, the iPhone is technically 8GiB (8,000,000,000 bytes) formatted is about 7.65GB (where 1GB = 1,024,000,000 bytes). Minus the 7.24 after fresh install leaves you 410 MB for the OS on that phone.

hth

Yeah; why is that everybody forgets about formatting...

although let's be realistic.... edge maybe on the "go" but like a turtle is on the "go". I hope v2 has a choice to go 3G with java etc.

This is one of the key reasons I did not really think about purchasing one. The other big sticking point for me is not being able to use third party applications. Flash and then java follow behind that, though I expect those through firmware updates down the line probably. Either way, I think I'll wait. I'm glad to hear it at least meets expectations for most people and that build quality is good.

good to see all you people testing out my future purchase :)

although im waiting till JAN, and hopefull rev2 by then. perfect time for contract to expire with $print

I picked up my 4GB iPhone today and my initial impressions are really positive. They put a LOT of thought into how functions work and which actions lead to other actions.

In no particular order. . .the biggest frustrations are -
- Very little announced regarding ringtones. My guess is that Apple and AT&T will pair up on a ringtone section of the iTunes store and split the money.
- On the phone, the contact list supports groups and even allows you to view by group. . .and you can tell iTunes which iCal calendars to sync. . .but. . .on the phone, when you add a contact, there's no way to assign a group - and - when you set a new event on the phone, there's no way to assign it to a particular iCal calendar. . .so the only way around this is to put a note in one of the fields and make the adjustments in AB/iCal after syncing. If anyone has found a way around this, I'm definitely interested.
- No way to select multiple mail messages or delete multiple mail items. Even an "Empty Trash" would be nice.
- The "slider" to unlock the phone seems overly picky to me. Slide it too fast and it simply bounces back to original position.
- The "i" in the Stocks or Weather (for example) widgets can be maddeningly frustrating to get.

Other observations -
- In the calendar, looking at month view and listing the appointments below is awesome - VERY intuitive.
- Seems odd to have a mechanical button to get you back "home" since everything else is so smoothly executed on the glass.

Anyway. . .diggin it so far.

Hey, before you go and buy that iphone, take a look at this website for a full rundown of the Mobile phone.

I don't understand why they recessed the headphone jack and left out 3G... If those errors were corrected I would buy one.

yeah i'm posting from one right now and it's pretty cool definitely. The keyboard is touchy but i'm sure with use one would get used to it. I gotta say though when tou can use the widescreen keyboard it is NICE. Anywho, it's not that bad, edge isn't THAT slow for hardforum use.

Has everyone/anyone noticed that the EDGE network is really slow? Does anyone think that this will be changed somehow through the firmware?

It really depends on location; major cities received speed updates recently and it's actually usable here in Seattle. I mean, I wouldn't use it while driving, which is illegal now anyway, but I'd use it in the city if I had to look something up.

That was by far the biggest problem I had with the iPhone (I didn't get to use the keyboard that long, but in the time I used it, it was a close second). Over EDGE the homepage load time was well over a minute, which is really too bad. There is a lot of stuff that I hope other manufactures take note of, but 3G networks have been out for a few years now (I've had a 3G cellphone for about 2 years and a PC card for longer than that).

No doubt the Apple Cultists will flame me for saying it like it is but it's about time somebody did.

It is a phone. The ones that are making it a big deal are the ones that hate every Apple product released. Since its Apple, it receives automatic hate. If HTC released it, there will be no rampant posts or top 10 reasons not to categories. No one will point out the features it doesn't have, calculate entire ownership costs, complain about standard contract cancellation fees, blah blah. Haters are just as worse as fanboys. And no I am not calling you a hater just making a general observation.

I can't believe it doesn't have A2DP (Bluetooth stereo) either. My year old Sony Ericsson W850i has A2DP+AVRCP, and once you've found a good wireless headset, you never want to go back to a corded headset again if you can avoid it.

Hopefully, they'll fix that with an update, since it just requires a 1.2 or better Bluetooth chip, the rest is done with the Bluetooth software stack. But I doubt it, a $150 A2DP plug-in accessory is just the sort of thing Apple will make l bank on, rather than a free update.

Actually, the more I think about it, I bet I know why they didn't include A2DP or UMTS/3G...battery life. Both put a dent in a mobile's charge, and you can bet if people had either or both, they'd be using both and then be looking at a dead iPhone in a matter of hours, and be burning through those 300 charge cycles before you knew it.

Hey Pitbull. . .how about giving folks the actual context of an article you refer to and not just the first paragraph next time. If you read the whole article, in point #1 the author proceeds to say that the whole article was to simply regurgitate the usual FUD (fear/uncertainty/doubt) about the iPhone so he can get one and goes on to say how badly he wants one.

Well. . .that's been the party line coming out of Apple lately anyway. However, remember that Apple was first in talks with Verizon for the iPhone but couldn't work out business details (iTunes store vs. vCast). But I'd be willing to wager that if the business details would have worked out the iPhone would be EVDO. I think the bigger reason for using EDGE is AT&T. For years, Verizon and Sprint have been rolling out EVDO and in the last year have been making significant upgrades. And for the last several years, Cingular/AT&T have had HSDPA. And they've been ridiculously slow about developing and rolling it out. Right now, HSDPA is available in very few markets, where EDGE is available nationwide (to varying degrees). With the advertising push Apple has done with the iPhone, the data network had to be nationwide. So EDGE became the choice. Now. . .it's possible that producing a phone which would do both EDGE and HSDPA would have compromised battery life too much. But I think it's more to do with AT&T being laggard with deploying HSDPA. Hopefully, Apple will kick them in the butt to get this done but unfortunately I think moving from EDGE to HSDPA will require a new phone.

Oh yeah - you've convinced me... a pre-launch article that concludes with:

And here's the number one reason why you shouldn't even consider buying an iPhone:

1. I'll Get to the Apple Store Ahead of You
If you've read this far then you've finally discovered the *real* reason I wrote this column.

You see, I'm out to dissuade as many people as possible from buying an iPhone so that I have less competition on Friday when I go to get mine. Yep, this entire column is nothing more than a self-serving ruse at giving myself the best chance possible to snag an iPhone on opening day.

roffleroffleroffle. nice line in the sand, hater.

this probably had quite a bit to do with it. One slight "correction," IMO, it was more cingular that failed to develop and deploy 3g networks nationwide, and before they acquired attws a couple years ago, they also had minimal edge coverage. So what I'm trying to say here :p is that the "new at&t" can thank the attws of yore that they even had a decent edge network for the iphone to operate on and hopefully now that cingular is under new ownership, they will begin to pursue more next gen tech.

Well. . .T-Mobile and AT&T both bought a bunch of newly-released spectrum at the FCC's auction last fall. Here's to hoping they get off the dime and fully deploy honest-to-goodness 3G.

i sent you a link and bring your phone:p :D

got it! will do! what day is it exactly?

edit: ah nvm, saw it on the homepage that you linked me too. I'll see what I'm doing that day!
