Good PS3 displays

Reckoned i'd ask here, since it's less to do with PC displays, and people're more likely to be able to help:

What should I look for in a display to cater well for a PS3? I used to have a great time with people on consoles, so I thought that since I have the dough now and may not in the future, i'd splash out on a 37-or-so-inch Samsung and a PS3.

However, it's come to my attention that though the panels i've been looking at (Samsung LE37R87BDX, mainly) are within my budget and of good quality, the resolution isn't full 1080p, and I was under the impression this was needed to support a PS3 without it looking total wank. What do I need to know, if anything?

Wally what do you mean by "looking total wank" ?

I own a PS3 and I have a limited budget myself so I have an LCD by Olevia 37" but it isn't 1080p and even though I am looking at it in 1080i or 720p I find the look very impressive. My standars may not be the same as yours though.I am sure it would look even better at 1080p but I don't think I would classify it as "total wank"

From someone who owns a PS3 and 3 HDTVs at home, let me tell you that you DO NOT need 1080p to get the most out of your PS3. Especially since you're looking at smaller sets. 1080p only makes a difference on larger sets 60"+ where you might, just might be able to notice a difference, depending on whether or not you are an audio/videophile. On a 37" HDTV though? Don't waste your money, especially since it doesn't seem like your an videophile, so I'm willing to bet you'd be happy with any HD picture and won't notice a difference between 1080i and 1080p.

Cheers, this is the sort of stuff I was after. I was under the - evidently mistaken - impression that 1080p was actually required for the ps3 to function. If not, i'm sorted. Thanks a lot.

The early reports of PS3 incompatibility with non 1080p sets were hugely overreported, and by now have been solved.

I use my PS3 with a 4 year old Hitachi 57SWX20b HDTV (a high-def RPTV based set) and it works fine. Even though my set only does 1080i things look great. 1080i vs 1080p is mostly a marketing ploy, hardly anyone can see the difference between 1080i, 720p, and 1080p when displayed natively.

Cheers. After the 37" M87, I reckon - £899 isn't too shabby, really, and though you lot're right about the PS3 1080p excitement and my likely inability to determine a difference, I can afford it, and this is really intended to last me an awfully long time. Thanks for the help.

The one thing I would say is if you are going for 1080p, get something larger. You will really have a very hard time telling any difference on anything less than 40", and to have any appreciable difference you really need to to get a 46" or larger. It could be that my eyes just aren't that good at seeing these things and it is a huge difference for others, but I wouldn't even bother with 1080p unless I was getting at least a 46" tv (and my wife won't let me :( ).

A 1080i interlaced display takes 1080 lines of resolution and breaks them down to two fields of 540 lines - one displayed after the other, fooling the eye into seeing 1080 lines of picture. This means that there will be roughly 1 million pixels onscreen at any given time.

A 1080p progressive display shows 1080 lines of resolution in each field. This doubles the resolution onscreen to over 2 million pixels

there is a difference, but as you say it may be tough to see for the average joe. although 1080i is fabulous I'd take progressive any day. it does look crisper & sharper
