Hi, I have always been a value ram user since price and stability have been paramount up until this point. Now that high performance ddr2 ram has dropped below what I payed for value ram, I am considering upgrading. I have a E6300 and will be getting a Gigabyte DS3 rev 3.3 to replace my Asrock board. I have never overclocked anything before, but might try my hand at it. Maybe. Anyway, based on various sources, I feel comfortable going with Crucial. My main question is what the difference is between normal ballistix and the tracer line. I was thinking of getting either this: http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=BA23790&RSKU=BA23790
or this:

Not a big price difference, but I still value value. If I am not going to overclock, would I even need PC8500 ram? Thanks.

I would say there isn't much of a difference, maybe aesthetically is about the only difference.

They have the same timings, voltages, and heat properties.

1 is just a bit prettier and showier than the other.

You don't need PC8500 ram, but on a lot of motherboards you can set the ram to 1066 speed without overclocking the cpu. Not sure its worth the extra money over 800mhz but thats for you to decide.

Tracers are supposedly have higher binned ram chips as well. Though there is no real evidence for this. Both seem to overclock the same.

they do overclock the same. any difference is just by chance.

they use the same pcb and chips.. the only real difference is the lights and spreader color. get whichever looks more fun to you. keep in mind that the lights are really pretty:

I agree

However with the highest mulitplier of 7x the 6300 is the one, the only, C2D where I would say faster than 800MHz ram may be needed. See my sig .

do the math.

cpu runs FSB x 7

ram runs 2 x FSB

He isn't overclocking, so unless the 1000/1066 is the same price, he should stick with no more than 800.

Get g-skill 2 gig ddr 800 if you can, id recommend them over ballistix any time.

Thanks guys. Can always depend on H crowds to help out. I am just going to go for non tracer 667mhz ram as it is under $90 with no rebates and I doubt I will ever overclock and have no windows so pretty, fast ram is pointless for me. Thanks again for the recommendations.

The Ballistix pc 5300 wont get you too far.... Mine can barely do ddr1200 at 2.2v, topped out at around 620fsb or so:D .....

yeah, that's nothing compared to the pc8500 tracers that do this with 2.2v set in the bios :D

just playing, don't hurt me  :D

Too late... Its on now bitch..... Im not one who like to show off but you left me no choice.... Here it is, luihed special one of a kind ram.... Kingston value ram with ballistix SPD and OCZ crossfire timings and subs..... All settings done in bios, no Memset or any window base software to change timings....:p ... Without these rams, this run will be over an hour....
