New Macbook Pros

I bit on the new 15" w/ LED!

free iPod nano also. But since I already have an iPod, it's going to ebay.

pretty nice stuff. think secret was almost dead on with the predictions....aside from the 1920x1200 display.

i was hoping they would update the mac pro as well but no dice. well heres hoping that they introduce a new one at WWDC.

I just ordered a Thinkpad T61 15.4" last week. I'm considering canceling the order and trying out the new Macbook Pro. Tough choices indeed!

I hope your not such a clumsy moron that you need a "roll cage" to protect a laptop...just watch what you do...

Man these look pretty nice. If my macbook wasn't still going strong I would definitely consider picking up one of these right away.

so since they higher end 15" and 17" run at 2.4ghz, does that mean they'll interfere with 802.11b/g networks and cordless phones?

:p

How often do you think Apple needs to update the Mac Pro? I mean geez - the 8-core was only introduced less than two months ago. What do you suppose they should update it to, exactly?

So, they released them today.

Santa Rosa, LED Backlit displays, and 1920x1200 res...

among other specs:

The 1920x1200 is only available on the 17". The 15" is still stuck at 1440x900. What surprised me more than anything on this round of MBP updates was that Apple still hasn't released a 15" panel @ 1680x1050

What needs to be updated?? C'mon the video cards they offer are very very dated. A 7300gt or a X1900XT are not exactly the most powerful cards for apple's top of the line product. I mean atleast the MBP got a 8600M GT now and 2GB of ram but the base Mac Pro has a 7300gt and 1gb....if I didnt need the shear horsepower of those dual 2.66ghz cpus I would pickup a MBP today....but for now I'll just wait until they do those minor updates to the Pro and hang out with my wife's POS 13" Toshiba Core Duo notebook

I would pick up a new mac cause of the higher res on that tiny monitor but what is the point to having 1080p when the dvd drive is only a DVD burner and not HD or BR, apple should of added one!

Sorry. . .Apple's never done a product revision just to update/add BTO parts such as RAM or video cards. A CPU speed bump? yes. An architectural change? sure. A product rev just for a video card or increased standard RAM? no way. They'll update or add the BTO items in a product revision in conjunction with other fundamental items (logic board revisions, CPUs, etc) - but not on their own.

While I agree that the Mac Pro should come with a minimum of 2GB RAM, you can add more - either through BTO or third-party. As for the video card, what currently-shipping Mac-compatible card would you have Apple put into the Mac Pro?

With Intel slashing prices in the not so distant future why not bump up the speeds on the Pros? Add some more RAM and say hmm a HD 2900XT? I'm just saying those cards are very dated esp with PCs running 8800s and 2900s.....surely apple engineers/developers can work with either amd/ati or nvidia with a next gen card for their flagship product.

will it happen? probably not but with the MBPs getting a bump in cpu speed, more ram, a better video card, LED screens and better resolutions....I was just hoping they would atleast make the Pro a little bit better then a notebook.

And yes sure you can shell out $100-250 for more RAM but why?? If they are going to equip their basic MBP with 2gb atleast let the desktop have the same.

WHY do you need those, specifically though?

For what they do, the current vid cards in the Mac Pro's surely do it well enough, and perhaps the limiting factor in mainly what they are doing is not the video card.

Also, I hate to be the one to say this but a Mac Pro is LEAGUES better than the notebook line.

bah my first gen MBP seems so dated now :(
damn you apple

damn you

nice vid card

I still like my first gen MBP.

Unless these are cooler or have longer battery life (by an hour or so) i'm not interested.

Not sure about heat (we'll probably have to wait a few days for in-depth reviews) but Apple says the 15" gets 6 hours of battery life. I know that's an overstatement, but my 1st gen gets 3-3.5 hours as opposed to Apple's "4 hours". So even if it only gets 5 hours instead of 6, that's still a marked improvement over the previous 2 gens.

EDIT: I'm also not chomping at the bit to get one of these. The LCD backlight looks nice, but I don't need the faster processor or better video for anything right now, and I already have 1.5GB of RAM. I try to upgrade every two years, so I won't be in the market for a new Mac until next summer (got this one last August for ~$1400).

I bit on the High Def 17" MBP with a 7200rpm drive at around 10:30 this morning :)

Will post pics when I receive it if anyone's interested. It's supposed to arrive between this Friday and next Wednesday

With any luck I have a buyer for my MacBook. Then I'll get a shiny new MBP 15" with my Edu discount.:)

These new MBP's are look fantastic. The 2 Gb RAM standard is great, and the onboard video will be great for Final Cut Studio.

Now if Apple would just put two mouse buttons right on the actual MacBook ;)

This is what i have been waiting for.

I am going to buy a 15'' Fully Maxed out <3

I cannot wait to expirance OSX on 4GB of Ram. This should be splendid indeed :D :p

I agree with Valve...I really wish they had two buttons...

I'm still waiting for Leapord before I really jump on it.

To be honest... I think the 2 finger click / scroll is the best damn invention ever.

I find myself doing that now on any trackpad, and it's kind of annoying (because 'regular' trackpads just wig out when you 2 finger them)

Totally with you on that one; not the mention the sheer SIZE of the MB/MBP trackpad's. PC laptop trackpad's are tiny...

Scrolling side to side, up and down, and two finger double click are like part of my computing DNA now; I hate using friends PC laptops now, even if for a short while (usually fixing something, or working on a project with them)

Nice upgrade, but I'll pass.

My final gen 15" powerbook does everything I need it to.

I bought it refurbished one year ago this month, and have had absolutely zero issues with it so far.

I maxed out it's RAM to 2GB last week, so I'm good.

Besides, it's paid for. :)

I am gonna need a laptop next year for college, and these MBP's are pretty tempting...

Very impressive specs, and the LED backlighting looks pretty good. :D

I think my wife needs a Macbook pro now...

she can have my old one, I'm getting a new one! :D

/agree for the two finger click and scroll.

I don't know if Apple owns a patent or has exclusive licence on the trackpad tech they're using, but they make by far the best one in the business. Every PC laptop I've ever had or used has been small and uncomfortable, and is hard to right click on without moving your thumb awkwardly. Not to mention the "scroll strips" that range from working about 1% of the time, to scrolling a whole document with one inadvertent touch.

Even if everything about Macs goes to hell in the future, I would still buy a MacBook from now on even if I ran nothing but Windows, just for the trackpad.

It absolutely is, and I find my self doing the same thing on every other laptop.

What I'm talking about is right-click. OS X has full support for it, so why can't the hardware?

I think it's their minimalist design ideas maybe...

But like The Hunter said, most trackpads make you contort your wrist to reach the right click button.

I guess in the ergonomics of it, they could add a right-button to the right side of the track pad (along the right perimeter), thus when your fingers (index, middle, ring) are on the pad, and your thumb is on the primary button, you can access the secondary button with your pinky.

Of course that ostracizes the lefties among us. (me being one of them ;) )

Aww... I was so hopping that the 15" version would get a 1680x1050 upgrade.

I'd so sell my current mbp to get the new one if it has that resolution... My next MBP (or equivalent in the future) is when it sports higher resolution.

While I'd be fairly strongly against a separate 2nd button, if Apple could come up with some sort of hardware scheme to make the one big button into two separate ones (kinda like the Mighty Mouse*) if you so desire, that might be a good idea, so you keep the aesthetics and single button functionality if you like, but the diehard hardware 2nd buttoners can have that too.

*I have heard that the Mighty Mouse kinda sucks with accidental touches and resting one finger on the mouse while trying to click with the other, so hopefully that could be avoided

I just wanted to say that I've been using this macbook for a couple weeks now, thinking about getting one of the new MBPs

But that's beside the point. That 2 finger scroll thing mentioned, I just tried it, and it blew my mind. Thanks!

I know this is a stupid question but....I'm stupid. Apple says the MBP uses PC5300 ram. Will PC5400 work in it?
