Just because Apple is now selling tunes without DRM, you’d better think twice before you start sharing your music with everyone. While this may seem obvious to most of us, you’d be surprised how many people actually think no DRM means they are free to share their music with everyone.

Sure, you can now download music from the iTunes store without DRM but that doesn't mean you should just willy nilly start sharing that music with your friends. For one thing, it's illegal. For another, your account information is embedded into that m4a music file.

mmmm itunes

another program i wont let touch my computer.

Good thing I rip my cds to FLAC and other stuff when I buy them, then I burn myself another copy to use for anything else and never touch the original cd again!

at least apple is trying to get the industry to try to stop using DRM (which is useless)

If you are going to copy it why would you buy it? Why not just download it?

Still doesn't matter to me. Until these tunes stores start selling at least FLAC (or similar lossless), or even better full fidelity CDDA/WAV tracks at the same prices (or less - no physical product, liners, etc after all) as current, I will NOT waste my time.

why would you want WAV's instead of any lossless format? having free space on your hard drive make you feel antsy? if the file is losslessly compressed, then every bit of audio data in that WAV file is in the lossless file already. it just takes up less space on your disc.

Anyway, I agree that these should ideally be lossless files. But let's be honest- 256 kbps AAC files are pretty darned hard to distinguish from lossless. I used to rip EVERYTHING i bought into lossless formats (first APE, then FLAC) but when I filled my 60GB ipod, i decided to do some double blind tests in a real studio using real studio monitors (i work at lucasfilm, i actually did this testing up at skywalker sound). I could not identify the lossless file in any of the tests i did. Obviously, YMMV, but I'm comfortable buying a 256 kbps AAC file.

actually, many of the albums on itunes have the liner notes. i got booklets with the last arcade fire album, and lcd soundsystem. you get a PDF of them.

torrents are bad for anything you can get in trouble for. There are much more secure means of sharing. :)

So... we just strip the account information from the mp4 file. Maybe they did something cool, like hide it in a frequency we can't hear. :)

I Can't see how this is NOT DRM... It is still something that alters the file to make it more secure. Sure it will play nice with other software and mp3 players, but it is still DRM. It does give you an incentive to not share the music but what if my mp3 player of choice is stolen! then some criminal has my personal information and they didn't even get my wallet!! There is always a catch with these DRM infections.
