i've been having this problem in STALKER where it appears to stutter/skip/stop up for half a second or so, especially when i first start the game (little loading icon in the right hand corner often appears when this happens). i was wondering if this could be resolved by buying a raptor since i've been planning on a hard drive upgrade and my current one isn't exactly that great.

now, i realize STALKER has issues, and this could very well be the game's fault entirely but since i'm going to buy a new HD anyway, i might as well make a purchase that can also solve this "problem" and increase my overall gaming performance if possible.

oh, and i have a fairly decent computer, so if it's my hardware causing the problem in STALKER, i doubt it's anything other than the hard drive:
E6400
eVGA 8800GTS 320mb
1gb Corsair DDR2 667mhz
WD 160GB HD 8mb cache (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136075)
Thermaltake TR2-500W

Honestly from my experience with my Raptor, it only improves loading times and thats about it. I would upgrade the ram to 2 gigs, and that may make a big difference, not a Raptor.

Another vote for RAM. I know I was glad when I picked up 2 gigs for Oblivion, and since memory is absolutely dirt cheap right now you don't have any excuse not to.

I'm gonna suggest ram as well. Huge improvement when I upgraded to 2 gigs.

Hey throw another Gig of memory in it AND get the Raptor.
You won't be sorry you did ! :)

I know that with my old computer I was trying to play Gothic 3 with 1 gig of ram, and it was sometimes a stutter-fest. Added a gig and most of the stuttering went away, it was so much more enjoyable!

Usually with stuttering it's a ram thrashing type thing. Even if you got a raptor, it won't be fast enough to load game files to get rid of stuttering. That's what the RAM is for!

+1 for ram

I agree with oldbrave. My Oblivion play became a whole lot more enjoyable when I moved my games over to a Raptor. It used to stutter briefly when loading a large area, disk access took a big hit as well as I could hear it and see it on performance charts. I already had 2GB of RAM before upgrading to the Raptor so I know that wasn't it. ;) I play Oblivion pretty hardcore these days, about 6 hours a day minimum. Raptors can be a gamers best friend!

That's a really long time to play Oblivion every day.... do you get paid for it?

Nope, unfortunately. I'm just pretty addicted to the game. :D I was the same way with Morrowind too but maybe not quite as intense.

Yeah Morrowind took a good chunk of my time too, but back then I only had homework to do and barely did it at that ;)

But now I have work and a wife so video gaming usually takes a back seat to that. Or else I just might be able to play for 6 hours a day too!

Well, I've been on the disabled list from work for a little while now so I have all kinds of free time. I just hope they start sending my disability checks soon, I could use some upgrades. :D

Nice, I want to get hurt at work.... :D

Pretty addicted? *LOL* I was thinking that I was addicted to Trackmania Nations, and I only play that ~3 hours every couple of days................. i'd say with Oblivion, you're VERY addicted................. LMAO!

STALKER has hit almost 3 of my 4 gigs when I was playing for a long period of time. Craziness.
