is there anything special that i should look for, other than the square chips, in looking for some Micron D9GMH based (value) ram?

anyway to tell?

Basically, search around for other people that have bought it, and see what it was packaged as. Memory can and does have the chips swapped out between batches of a particular product, so even then there's a bit of luck involved.

Getting D9 chips on value RAM is iffy. You might get another chip even though someone else received D9.

With prices on DDR2 being so low these days, IMHO you would be better off buying a name brand, speed graded and tested kit of memory.

For example OCZ uses D9 in all kits above PC2-7200. I believe most manufacturers are doing the same. Shop around, there are some good bargains on top rate memory out there.

well if i can get some corsair value select with d9s, will save me some cash and do the same thing. going to look into it.

G.Skill "HZ" is a 6-layer PCB with D9

I love my 4x1GB. G.Skill confirms nothing in the "HZ" is anything but D9GMH or GKX

Crucial Ballistix are D9s. Don't know what exactly my Ballistix Tracer DDR2-1000s are, but they're likely some variation of D9.

what's the best variant of D9 ?

Depends on what your going to use it for....

D9GKX is the highest binned IC and also the most expensive.... It has the capability to reach high fsb at lower voltage... best for 24/7 overclock...

D9GMH is the more common of the two... needs more voltage than GKX in general but it reacts better to voltage so they tend to reach higher/tighter timings than the GKX if one is brave enough to feed it lot of vdimm.... Best for benching

Thats my understanding but Ill have a better idea next week cos I have a set of D9GKX ( Firestick pc 8000) and high binned D9GMH ( Ballistix pc8500 ) coming and Ill have a chance to test them myself.... Im only keeping 1 set and the Firesticks has to be something special for me to keep them.... I try to be a loyal crucial customer cos theyve always been good to me......

Crucial Ballistix are D9s. Don't know what exactly my Ballistix Tracer DDR2-1000s are, but they're likely some variation of D9.

Theyre D9GMH with 2ns ICs..... and they kick ass....:D

are all the ballistix d9s? or just the tracers? or just the 7200 and up ??

All Crucial Ballistics stick starting from PC5300 (Tracer and nor tracer) are based on D9s mostly GMH expect one PC8500 kit that has been reported as GKX (one of a kind)

Also the new PC6400HZ kits from G.Skill are made by Crucial
