I know of a XBox 360 that was stolen, and I am trying to assist in tracking down a contact at Microsoft who will flag it for the police if it is connected online. Has anyone had any experience in this issue?

I have herd story's about how apple turns a blind eye to this kind of assistance.

Call them and ask?

Ill bet money they dont do anything though.

without a court order, i doubt microsoft or the ISP would give out any information.

homeowners insurance should cover this sort of thing.
otherwise, chalk it up as a learning experience.

I don't know where to call. I did find 1-800-4MY-XBOX and will pass it onto the investigating officer. I was hoping for a more hopeful answer. I also dug up a phone number for Major Nelson guy who i guess is on the XBox dev. team. And left him a message.

What kind of learning experience? To put bars on the windows? Have a big dog in the house? C'mon now.

Homeowner's should cover it, yes. However if he is able to provide proof of ownership over the console- the original box, or if he has registered it, or whatever... I don't see why they wouldn't work with local police forces to get it if it ever hits online. I'm sure as mentioned they wouldn't give this information out to individuals, however.

If you're honestly looking for this information, then your first step would be to contact Microsoft. 800-4MY-XBOX is what I think the # is. Give them a call and start the ball rolling.

*edit* See you already have the #. Took too long to post.

MS can see the console id which was tied to your gamertag. I believe that's a start ,wish you the best of luck in finding that crook.

had a friend with the same issue.
i called Microshaft and got promoted to the highest lvl of technical support.
They said that they don't track ip addresses or mac addresses when they connect to xbox live so that they could track a serial #.

I think they are full of it.
They would just you rather spend another 400$ so they have 2 360's online instead of just 1.

Isn't this really something the police or your insurance company should be dealing with?

It has more to do with legality and invasion of privacy than it does MS wanting you to buy another console.

Handing out IP addresses and linking them to real addresses probably violates several laws in most states. MS can't just hand over that information, even if they want to.

If anything, blame the police dept. for not caring enough to file a warrant to get the information and track the guy down.

Microsoft is not a law enforcement agency; don't expect them to go vigilante and track down your missing 360 for you. Shit, they don't even know for sure if you're telling the truth. You could have sold it to the guy. It's the police department's job to sort that out.

How is that relevant?

There are a lot of legality issues with what you are asking Microsoft to do. I highly doubt they'll will help you.

Absolutely.

As stated above Microsoft has legal ramifcations it must adhere to in these situations. I'm sorry that you lost your console, but this is a matter for the authorities to deal with.

Can try reporting the MAC address if you have it to local ISPs - they can usually put out a watch for it if it hits their network. Granted its easier for me - we have a whole 2 ISPs in the town. I've done it when we had laptops stolen at work.

If you don't have the MAC address you may still be able to grab it from the router logs.

*shrug* just an idea

I highly doubt any police place would even want to help either. My brother lost a ton of money on paypal and they didn't even want to help him with that. By the time you get anywhere with it or anything it would probably be years from now. If it was stolen and you have no clue who took it, chances are that it would never be found. Hope the best but most likely you'll have to buy another one ;). Theres always other consoles if you wanna change now :)

Find another xbox and recover your live accounts onto that; it'll prevent the thief from purchasing things on your account.

File a police report. There is a point of contact that the police can use for requesting information on a stolen Xbox, but IIRC, such information can only be released at teh request of law enforcement. I don't remember the email address off hand, but I'll check with a couple people that might know.

Why would someone change consoles because of this ?

"Hey someone sold my BMW! Screw BMW, I'll try a Honda now."

Here is the to do:

If your Xbox 360 is stolen you should first consider recovering your Gamertag to another Xbox 360. This will prevent the thieves (or the people the thieves sell the Xbox to) from using your account. You will be able to recover the Gamertag to your replacement unit when you are ready.

Here are the instructions on how to recover your gamer tag: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/connecttolive/xbox360/livesetup/recovergamertag.htm

Xbox cannot give information about any use of an Xbox 360 to you, but they can supply law enforcement with this information to further their investigation. The law enforcement agency must serve Microsoft with a subpoena first. Microsoft can provide technical help to law enforcement this with this though its law enforcement support team at [email protected]. All subpoena and legal processing issues should be directed towards the Microsoft Online Services Law Enforcement Hotline: (425) 722-1299.

Thank you, that is perfect!

Update: The officer has had the XBox flagged, so the moment it is connected the IP will become available.

That's solid information that all of us were too lazy to hunt through legalese to find. Thanks! :)

Regarding home insurance.....most people have a 1% deductable on the value of their home......do the math....the 360 won't even come close to covering the deductable. Secondly, you should use the insurance anyway for catastrophic stuff.....like roofs and flooding. If you abuse your insurance you'll stand the chance of getting cancelled and good luck finding a new carrier.

lol 1% deductible on my LA condo is already 6k, and my house value pretty close to the median house price here. I've never really looked at my home owners insurance closely, but if it's anywhere near 1%, i wouldn't even think about filing. It'd have to be more like 0.1%.

Insurance obviously works very differently where I am (UK). Last claim I made I paid about $70 dollars and there's plenty of policies where you pay nothing at all if you have to make a claim.

I called Allstate about it the other day. They keep on raising the value of my property 5% each year.....and it sure ain't going up that fast in market value. I told them at this rate, it won't be too long that I'll have to pay for a fricken roof myself (have had a few hail storms the past few years) because it would fall beneath the deductable.

Microsoft would be completely happy to help you replace your stolen XBOX 360. There is a fee involved in the tracking and investigation fee though. It's $399.
