Okay so my friend and I took his computer to his backyard to clean out all the dust that had built up on his components, but his can of compressed air was empty. Not wanting to go to the store to purchase a new can, we decided to use a vacuum (bad idea) to suck the dust up and I think thats what shorted out his motherboard because we got cmos checksum errors etc. when we tried booting it. His board was a MSI 865PE Neo 2 (MS-6728 Ver. 1).

So now I really need a socket 478 board and I am probably going to go for some board with intel chipset. I was browsing Gigabyte's socket 478 intel chipset boards and gigabyte makes boards with like 18 different intel chipsets for the socket 478. I need advice as to which chipset is better (eg. 865P, 865PE, 875P). I also need help choosing a new board because of the great variation of models on the market. I never owned a socket 478 system, so I know nothing of the chipsets, motherboards etc and what to expect.

My friend is running a 2.4GHz P4 and 2GB of OCZ DDR400 RAM along with an 80GB SATA 150 western digital HD and an Asus 7600GS AGP. The board must accommodate all these components. I don't want integrated video, but would like integrated sound and ethernet.

Could somebody please give me some suggestions? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

i had the MSI Neo platinum 2 865PE

it was signed by the creator of the motherboard
and came with a letter from him saying how it was a kickass mobo
it was a good overclocker too

the Asus P4C-800 is one of the best boards ever made, IMO, but very hard to find nowadays (875 chipset). My 'extreme gamer'/ Graphic Desinger friend is still running that in one of his systems i built with a P4 3.4 EE since they are dirt cheap now, and switches between that and his AMD64 system and loves them both. The next best thing is the P4P-800 (865 chipset) which is also a solid board. I would either try to find those, or go with an Intel made board, those were all rock solid, i think i had used a D865PERL and it was great. :)

I would go with what was suggested above. I've been running the p4p800 deluxe for many years now and its been as solid as could be, with vista now I may be finally forced to move on, and I want to get a pci-e raid card, but this thing has been able to take everything I throw at it, including using the onboard ide, the onboard ide raid, onboard sata, AND a pci ide raid with 8 drives without a hitch. The board is technicly a 865 board but can use most of the features that are on the 875. If your feeling adventurous you can even do a wierd flash where it has part of the 875 and 865 flash in one.

I just picked up a P4S-800 from a forum member for $25...its not the best board but it does have OC capabilities and it was cheap :D I really just wanted an ATX board instead of a crappy Asus OEM mATX board.

But hey, if you want I'll send you my old crappy asus oem matx board for the cost of shipping :D

just a warning if you are going to buy the p4p800 make sure it isn't the cheaper p4p800-x model. that one is full of bugs.

I was looking at motherboardpro.com and they have old s478 DFI motherboards for pretty good prices. $39 for the Infinity series and $49 for the Lanparty series IIRC.

nah, my friend wants a full atx one. thanks anyways :)

If you want PCI-E 16x + S478 you need the Albatron PX915P4C Pro, it was the best PCI-E 16x and was RARE, link on specs: http://www.albatron.com.tw/English/product/mb/pro_detail.asp?rlink=Specification&no=160

Just so happens i still have mine, works good, sold the parts from it and rebuilt the current system from the DDR-400/7800GT. This system you can O/C too, i had a Prescott 3.0 run 3.3ghz flawlessly, and the P4 had a not so great stepping!!

It has the Intel 915 chipset, 8ch HD audio, built in 10/100ethernet, and 4 Sata 150 connectors.

I'll sell it to you for 100$+s/h, i didn't really want to sell the board but i'm in need of money. LMK!

my friend has a 7600gs AGP, so PCIe is a no go:( .

Definitely check out motherboardpro.com. For the price, the DFI boards are just as good as anything you'd find used in the forums.

only the lanparty one is in stock and 49.99 + ship is beyond what I'm willing to pay for my friend hehe.

Biostar P4M800 motherboard, with box and all accessories, $40 shipped? It's barely used. :(

Sorry that it's microATX, but it has an AGP slot, onboard audio, ethernet, etc.

Heatware in sig, under mavalpha.

I have a spare P4M800 too, just in case my 865PERL decides to work no more, i built tons of P4M800 systems for office use with both p4 and celerons and all i can say, those are good work horses :D
