so will the amd barcelona be faster than the conroe?

I don't think it really matters whether it's faster than C2d, I think Penryn is what counts.

Cant tell this early in the game which camp will earn my dollars

If Barcelona won't be faster, then Penryn will be...
Let's face it, there will always be faster CPUs just around the corner.

I'm not going to upgrade though. The difference will not be extremely big... It's an evolutional step, not a huge leap like going from the Athlon64/Pentium 4 to Core2.
Besides, I've yet to find any software that runs too slow on my Core2 :)
I'll upgrade when I need the extra processing power.

i always upgrade when i can afford something faster than what i curretly have.

what will happen to poor amd nobody buying their processors snif?

I really hate trying to pick a CPU and motherboard with the best upgrade path.

Initially I was all for C2D and was waiting for a decent non-buggy 680i m/board (which still hasnt surfaced) before building my new rig.

Then news about P35 surfaced and its ability to support DDR2 and DDR3, which made me think that maybe I want one of those boards so that I have the option to go DDR3 when it becomes more affordable.

Then news about X38 surfaced, being the performance replacement for the P975 and sporting pci-e v2.0.

Then we found out that nehalem will have an IMC, meaning that any intel m/board or processor I buy now will have to be thrown out by the end of next year if I want to upgrade.

Then it was reported that AMD's new barcelona and agena chips would work in current AM2 motherboards, I then asked myself should I build an AMD 6000+ rig (which seems to be on par with a E6600) and then upgrade to agena, but take the risk that it may suck.

In retrospect, I probably would have been better off getting an AM2 rig when they first came out, AMD are so much better than intel when it comes to supporting existing sockets and not stuffing their user base around.

*sigh*

Fuck this.......I should just put myself out of my misery and buy a console

cheap $100 mobo + e4300 OC the shit out of it keep the ram then when new AM3 chip comes out keep the ram and get a brand new board designed for it then your done! not some shitty AM2 socket crap board that will be outdated and probably wont be able to even take advantage of the chip anyways. On that note AMD hasn't even come right out and said it will be trully backwards compatible. I mean look a bunch of the boards only support up to what 5600-6000+ right now right? So dont base your upgrade path on boards that were built for upgraded 939s

I think your comparison is not reasonable.
Namely, AMD has Am2+ and Am3 sockets/chipsets/boards coming up, just like Intel has new chipsets with new features.
Getting an Am2 board now will not get you PCI-e 2.0 either, nor will it give you the maximum performance of future AMD chips.
Just like you can drop in a Penryn on most 965/975 boards you buy today, but you'll lose out on some of the features on future boards.

However, DDR3 won't be very compelling at first. The first chipsets will only support 1066 MHz speeds, as far as I understood. These speeds, and beyond, are already possible with high-end DDR2 today. And I wouldn't be surprised if that memory will be cheaper than DDR3 for the first 6 months or so.

i dont know what ill end up with

i just got a e4300 with a p6n-sli, with the plan to shove in a q6600 come Q3-pricedrops. if however penryn offers similar (or slighly more expensive) quad cores, i might go penryn-quad. If this however forces me to a new mobo, then all bets are off, if the mobo has to go then it might just make sense to go with amd IF barcelona delivers

for now im thinking Q6600, and after that im looking forward to nehalem, unless something crazy pops up in between

From what I heard, Barcelona will be a server chip at first. Desktop versions are not going to come out until Q4, which is a long ways off.

If i got Barcy...it will probally be the Shaghai core and DDR3

my rig is water-cooled...and its a pain to rebuild a new box and transfer it all over....so i want to see a big jump in performance b4 i go down that road....

I will put the best performing CPU in my systems without regard to which company manufactures them. If Barcelona is the best at the time then it will find its way into the system.

Yes, I plan on buying a single socket AM2+ board and dropping in a quad-core Opteron. I'll be able to move from my current 4-core Opteron setup (see sig) @ 1.8GHz to a new 4-core system with better performance; not only will I buy ~2.2GHz, but the IPC is higher as well. Also, with one socket instead of two, I will move to a smaller form factor with less heat and noise than my current rig. It's a huge win-win for me.

I'm just not sure if I want to hand my Opteron rig off to my wife, or try to sell it (mb + processors + ram) to help cover the cost of the new system. I'll probably buy around Christmas this year; I suppose I'll look more into it then.

I'll get the one that performs the best. I keep my rig for quite a bit longer than most other people on this board. Still got Socket A, but finally upgrading later this year (waiting for results on Agena).

I just went to C2D..its gonna be a few years before I do a full upgrade again.......

By that time no one is even gonna know what Barcelona is

There will be something out that makes todays chips look pathetic.....
Thats what I'm gonna get...:)

I've always heard the "proofs in the pudding". I am no "fanboi" of either AMD or Intel. I have 5x C2D's at the moment, because without a doubt, they are the fastest and best price/performance cpus in the market. When AMD comes out with a chip with a price/performance compareable to Intel's (either quad or dual) I will probably go AMD. I'm in the market for the best, not some attachment to a brand.

Edit: Who knows, when AMD finally gets the "Barcy" to market, maybe, just maybe, it'll give Intel some competition? (I kinda' doubt it though)

no.

My C2D is damn fine now and I will upgrade to quad core when they get cheaper. If Peryn runs on my 1333FSB mobo then even better but even then by the time I need to upgrade again there will probably be something better than Barcelona out already. But I will go with whoever has the better product whether it's AMD or Intel.
