Puget Custom Computers @ [H]

I went to puget systems website, and tried out their custom system configurator. I found it to be so slow as to be almost nonfunctional, but this may well be some problem with my version/setup of internet explorer. While the page was loading up, and any time I clicked on anything, my CPU usage would go up to 98% and my system would freeze for a while.

Assuming this isn't happening to everyone else, it must be a problem on my end.

And, I was surprised that they didn't appear to have AMD cpu's in the configurator.

WB had some errors in the run, which happens from time to time. Running it again - hopefully I'll have some results tonight.

It seems like they are a great company with outstanding customer support and a knack for what their customers are into. From the content on their website, it looks like they are passionate about computers like many of us are here. The warranty coverage also looks fantastic.

What disturbs me the most is the price. I don't feel this stuff as closely as I used to, but this hardware is no longer bleeding edge. The price is not bleeding edge; it is, however, significantly more than what one could build the system for and even comparably high to other small builders. Even though this may be a really nice machine, $2k is not chump change, and many people who will spend this kind of money on a machine will want more for their money.

Hey you, with the gaming rigs!

How'd it go?

WB finally finished its run without any errors. The results:

Without AVG: 122
With AVG: 121
Again after uninstalling AVG: 123

Basically, between the Adobe tests and the WB results, AVG had no effect on the metrics. This is fantastic news for me as an AVG user, but it still leaves the big question as to why this machine is so slow. Now that our testing is done, we can ship it back to Puget and maybe they can sort it out and report back.

Thanks for taking the time to run those tests! We'll give the machine a good look when it gets back here, to identify the reason. It goes a long way to have confirmation from Worldbench that AVG was not the difference.

Jon, as a new customer of yours, please do follow up on the speed issue. I would love to know that the issue was identified and that there are steps I can take on my new system to ensure max performance.

[H]ard reviewers, THANK YOU for a great review, and furthermore a phenomenal review process.

I stumbled across your site about a week ago and first learned about Puget at that time.

I've built all of the PC's I've ever owned myself except a HP Media Center. The experience with that Media Center has been horrendous. Have you ever known more than the first two tech support people you talk to when you have a problem? Have you ever tried to recite certifications you hold to simply get permission to open the case and pull out a hard drive to copy your data? Have you wondered why they are telling you that you need to take the machine into a shop, and pay someone to copy your data when the faulty component is their problem? Have you had the same component blow out on you several times and are now terrified of it doing so again now that warranty is out? That pretty much sums up my HP experience.

But this is about Puget. A breath of fresh air. A company that as was posted above is passionate about what they do.

I just ordered my system last night at 6PM. Everyone I've spoken with (Perry and Richard) was friendly, responsive, INFORMATIVE (GASP!) and totally willing to work hard to make my buying experience a success. I'm likely one of the nightmare customers, I do my research, but don't spend day in and day out with the stuff so in between knowing that the 45nm chips are coming out in Q3, don't know if I should go with the 8500 or 8600 GT. The Puget folks I've spoken with have been able to have a conversation with me, and answer my barrage of questions filling in gaps of my knowledge to help me make the best buying decisions for my needs possible.

I'm thrilled to be waiting for my new machine, and want to apologize to any other customers as it will likely be me slowing the site down as I hammer refresh waiting to see if they can actually get it out for me on Wednesday/Thursday so I can save $140 on shipping overnight.

BTW - to the Puget folks I do concur that the web site seemed to slow down a few times during the day (7AM this morning was one). I'll be willing to track times as I will be there nonstop over the next few days watching my build status (love that setup btw!)

In summary - YES, I paid more. YES I agree with the review that it looks to be worth it. I started off with a $2K ibuypower machine and ended up with a $3300 Puget machine. I called ibuypower's sales line and was put on hold for 30 minutes before I gave up wanting to ask a simple question. That is when I realized that components are commodities, but quality (customer service, tech support, and passion about technology) is a rarity and is worth the premium.

[H]ard - I would love to see Puget get the Highly Recommended I feel they deserve once they come back with a resolution on the lower than expected speeds.

I am curious is [h] reviewing anymore computers, because it has been a while since the last review.

Great review as always.

I did a good bit of research before buying my PC and it was a tough call between Puget, Velocity Micro, and ABS. I finally settled on ABS, when the Core 2 Duo's came out, and have had zero problems with it.:D

In a couple of years I'll be looking for a new PC and it looks like I'll have a tough time choosing between these three companies again.:(

It's nice to know that we, as gamers, have choices though.

sry didnt see that thread, wondering why I've been looking for a new review every day and didnt see one, but it's been a good run. Glad you guys were able to do. Hats off. :D
