No games to justify an upgrade?

I've asked myself why I'm following the developments in video card world. Video cards are used to play games. There are almost no new games around. What's the point?

The last important game launch was Command n Conquer 3. Before that... I don't even remember. Next exciting game to be released? Crysis. When? I don't know, maybe 6 months.

Thinking like this, I'm depressed about the money I spend on a PC. 3-4 games each year doesn't justify these prices. I have a 7900 GS, I can upgrade to a G80 or R600, but why would I do that? What new game will I play on it? I know I'm ranting, but just wanted to share my thoughts. :)

ha I was just thinking the same thing myself...

after building my latest rig this past weekend, I played and finished HL2:E1 and reinstalled Q4 & Serious Sam 2 - hello to 2 years ago...

This thread nails it so to speak, current game selection is extremely frustrating. I was just wondering how a fellow like me who has upgraded 3D card every 6 months still has a X1900 in his rig. Logic dictates that I would have atleast 8800gts and gaming away. Reason is simple, no games :mad:

I hate RTS genre with passion so that might be a reason for my game blackout. Seriously, Bio Shock is the next game I really am waiting for, considering an upgrade when its out.

edit:

Also you just have to look at reviews, most of the games still used in benchmarks are ancient. :)

Yeah, I hate World War games and that stops me from playing many titles... But five years ago there were so many new games each month that we had a hard time choosing. Now we're basically buying cards to run 3dmark due to lack of games. :)

I tend to skip every other generation of cards. Geforce 2 > GF 4 > 6800... I'll get an 8800 sometime soon, oblivion makes my system cry with the 2048x2048 texture packs I added. I want more than a steady 20 fps :p

Bu how old is Oblivion? How many times are you going to finish it? There used to be a time when we got a new FRP game every other month and a new FPS game every month.

Same thing here, built my new PC in sept with a 7900GT, before that i had a 6800NU AGP, played HL2 EP1 again, installed CoD2, Quake 4, Serious Sam 2, only newish games ive bought have been Prey, and Company of Heros...yet i cant help but feel the need to get a 8800GTS..but why :confused:

Ok gotta admit that Neverwinter Nights 2 made me consider upgrading to 8800, but all the other games I got run just fine. Nwn2 is looks bad and runs even worse, so it must be badly optimized or something.

This is where I again talk about the decline and coming collapse of the pc gaming market. Then other people will argue, someone will link to an old thread with titles in development, etc.

Lets just cut to the end: PC game sales have been declining for a long time. You have people buying one game like WoW and playing it for years and not buying anything else. Sure, WoW might be generating a lot of revenue, but its not helping the market in the 'BIG PICTURE' kind of way.

I continue to use this picture to exemplify my point. This is what the EB I ran in 2001 looked like:

You will NOT find that in an EB/Gamestop or similar store now. Its reflective of the market. That is just 6 years ago folks. The PC had SIGNIFICANT shelf space just 6 years ago, and now has very little.

Consoles have continued to dominate and it appears that isn't going to stop. The PC market is going to eventually all but disappear, with a few titles a year being worthwhile, max. Perhaps on die gpus will help. We will see.

flame suit: on.

I have two X1900s and an Opteron 170 @ 2.7Ghz with 2GiB of RAM on XP x64. Currently playing: Ultima IV...

There was also a time when we had DX2-66 computers and were content playing and beating duke nukem and doom 10-20 times.

You got very good points, especially with the MMORPG comments, and I do agree that PC game quality has been rapidly. Maximise the eye candy and throw away the gameplay seems to be the trend these days. Also we got those horrible console ported games that "cough Oblivion" is just a plain slap into PC gamers face.

Still I don´t think PC gaming will go down into the hole, we maybe just seeing the rock bottom at the moment. Keyboard and mouse is such a strong combination that it is very hard to beat, so is the PC upgrading capability too. Lets hope we get the golden age back with games like Fallout (3 coming from Bethdesda :rolleyes: args), System(Bio) Shock, UFO Xcom and all the rest I forget to mention!

:D

Thats why I dont think the R600 is late to market, NVIDIA was just early with 8800 series :D

Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific
Ancient Wars: Sparta
Dawnspire
Test Drive Unlimited
Genesis Rising
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
The Sacred Rings
Lord of the Rings Online
Frontline: Fields of Thunder
Baseball Mogul 2008
Silverfall
Shivering Isles Expansion Pack
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars

I think all those came out within the last 2 months.

ARMA: Combat Operations, is already out if you ordered it online, but ships in a week if you want an American box copy.
Infernal also out on the 8th
Spider-man 3 also, but I'm not sure that's going to be worth mentioning.

No worries. Theres a HUUUGE sea of games expected out by early fall.

Bioshock
Hellgate: London
Valve Black Box
World in Conflict
UT3
Crysis
ET:QW

I dont actually know how I'm going to get the time to play everything. I think I'll probably just do a lot of TF2 and World in Conflict.

Unfortunately the only one interesting on there to me is Bioshock, and I can get that on the 360.

Well there is Warhammer online comeing out, I know that need some power. But it will not be using direct x 10, even though it will not be out untill end of summer.

With an 8800GTS I can now play Oblivion with HDR+4xAA/16XAF with buttery smooth frame rates. Oh, how sweet it is!

I'm at the point where a CPU upgrade would likely be more immediately useful (though not vital) than a GPU upgrade. (Yes, SupCom, I'm talking about you.) Everything I run doesn't bring my current video card to its knees (moderate-to-high settings, depending of course on the game) as it is. And with ATI's 2900 series cards coming fairly soonish, let alone the falling prices on the 8800s...what the hell's the point in upgrading now unless I literally found a $100 8800GTS?

I told myself I would not upgrade my X800 XL until a good game comes out. Besides all I play is HL2 deathmatch and Battlefield 2, why spend money now?

I got a 7900GTO back in September for my Opty 165 build and really haven't used it at all except for a few games of CnC3. I sold that system and built a new C2D system this week consisting of:

E6600
Corsair 620
DS3
OCZ 8500 2GB
X-Fi

And what videocard am I going to get? Probably a sub $125 one...there are just not enough games to justify a $600 8800GTX..which is kind of good. Hopefully low sales will convince nVidia to scale back their prices. Remember back in the GF2 days when the best possible card was ~$300? 100% price increase? Screw that.

New PC games i am planning to get
*C&C3 OUT
* stalker OUT
* halo2 for vista OUT MAY 18
* ET:QW
*MoH:A
* Crysis DX10
* FFoW
* Half life 2 Ep2 pack
*left for dead
*Parabellum
*World in conflict DX10
No set date:
*CoH opposing forces DX10 sort of
* UT3: It's real!
*CoD4
* Alan Wake DX10

360 games:
* burnout 5
*GTA4

theres plenty of stuff there ;)

And now pc games have one lonely rack and if you're lucky, pc games on both sides. But even then it's only because they have 20 copies of each title on the shelves just so they can use both sides.

I need a vid card now. Just bought e6420, mobo, ram today. I couldn't convince myself to order an 8800gts today knowing the 2900xt is 11 days away. Not that I think it's going to be an 8800 killer; just hoping it drops the prices down a notch or 2. I hate buying something only to see the price plummet 2 weeks later.....and hopefully that will happen.......in 2 weeks.

The only thing I've noticed is there's a whole lot less shitty pc games then there were 6 years ago. Less games is fine so long as they keep the crappy games away. Something consoles could learn to do.

I am happy with my setup hopefully it can push out a year more. because that is when I am going to have the money.

Thank god all the Redneck hunting games area all in the $5 bargin bin now instead of hogging half the shelf space. :cool:

Cant justify a system upgrade right now, like everyone said...no good games out(except STALKER and CNC3).

My upgrading is coming at the arrival of K10 and 2900.

I don't know guys, if I go to EB or Best Buy and look at the games for PS3, 360, and Wii, I can't help but think the PC has a lot better selection. Besides, EB is gimp; they don't want to sell PC games because they can't milk them for used resales and their 300% markup.

Back in November I made a choice to buy a 8800GTX over a PS3. Thank god I chose the 8800GTX! I walk by the PS3 shelf and laugh.

Rainbow six Vegas is a pretty recent game that runs pretty good on my system now that I have upgraded my video card. it is still an xbox360 port and really rough around the edges, the bugs are not game breaking.

STALKER is another huge recommendation,

It's nice playing FEAR combat at 60-70 fps with the maximum settings.

C&C3, even if you aren't a big fan of strategy games, give it a try.

Call of Juarez, western shooter similar to the call of duty games, with gorgeous graphics. I'm not clear on the release date for this one.

Left 4 Dead, coop multiplayer against zombies

HL2 episode two (with portal, team fortress 2), Episode two adds several graphical enhancements to the source engine, from the previews, the game looks incredibly detailed.

Quake wars: Enemy territory, this game looks like it will be a great team oriented multiplayer game. Check out some previews of it, the graphics will be incredible.

The Crossroads, there are a few previews of this circulating around, it looks like it is trying to merge a single player story type of gameplay, with multiplayer combat. This one is kind of iffy to me, because the developers didn't really explain the premise that well in my opinion, but it could turn out to be surprising, the graphics look beautiful and very artistic, IMO.

And then of course, Bioshock & Crysis are two big ones as well, I don't know what you're complaining about!

EBGames just decided to move towards console games.

At Fry's Electronics, the PC game section is 6 rows of shelves (3 aisles) plus another for jewel box games. That's about the same size as the console games section.

I second that I used to work at Sunnyvale and they had a huge section and I was lost and found a lot of games I have been having a hard time to find.

Unfortunately not! It's due for release Q1 2008 now! Basically they wanted to play with all the extra toys the EA merger brough and polish the game a bit more before release.

True there aren't a lot of games that current gen DX9 cards can't play, but there are tons of games I find that are thoroughly enjoyable to play now with decent hardware. Of which, that I play, include:

- Company of Heroes
- Oblivion (have yet to install Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles yet :D)
- Jade Empire
- Marvel Ultimate Alliance (great co-op play with gamepads)
- Supreme Commander
- STALKER
- Command and Conquer 3
- GRAW

Some of them are older but still very fun to play. There are a bunch of other even older games that I still play every now and then as well (CS:S, Call of Duty series, etc.) but the above are the more current ones. I agree, though, there used to be a lot more games being released on a monthly basis, but the good ones were much more spread out. If you have nothing to play now, all I can say is try to broaden your horizons. You never know what you may end up being addicted to. ;)

Damn, that's a priceless shot. I remember when EB looked like that. I used to shop there all the time back in those days. 98-03 was the Golden Age of PC Gaming. We didn't know how good we had it. Look at those beautiful, full sized game boxes. I can see AoE2, Asheron's Call, RtCW, Diablo2, and more in that pic. Some of the greatest games ever made.

You're absolutely right, PC games have steadily been going into the dumps over the past few years. Everything is becoming consolized. MMO's are the leading sector of the PC games market, and they are by far it's worst representation.

You upgrade when YOU need to or want to, not when THEY tell you to.

even older games that I still play every now and then as well (CS:S, Call of Duty series, etc.)

Pfft, I'm STILL playing Ultima IV - nearly done now, just became an 8-parts Avatar. THen one to Ultima V! And sometime in the distant future I might get to System Shock (after Underworlds 1 & 2), then maybe Shock 2, Deus Ex 1-2 - I'm a long way off getting to modern ones!

i have a 7600gt i bought last august, i'd love to upgrade for summer because it's the only time i can really game, but i don't think there's anything really interesting out right now. but i'll investigate some of those games posted. i wish they'd release new HL2 episodes every month at least. That would be great.

ok, quake wars, and world in conflict look ok

There are a lot of PC games coming out, just less then there were 4-5 years ago. Console's are more popular today. Personally I love both my Xbox360 and my PC for gaming. I use this 37 inch LCD to play both types. I do remember the days when EB was full of PC games, miss those days :(

If I was 20 again maybe I would be more upset but either the 360 or the PC has way too many games then I ever have time to play. At this point if I can finish 6 games a year I am doing well.
