Got my Sharp Aquos LC-32GP1U "Gaming" 1080p display today!

My Best Buy got in 3 of these last night, so maybe a lot more Best Buys will carry them now.
yea best buy also lets you special order it (37 inch). most will have it at the warehouse if they dont have it at the store. however it costs 1800 before taxes

States that I know of. It's not listed on Bestbuy.com's website either, but I know there's a SKU for it. I guess they just haven't added it to their website yet.

The pipeline is starting to fill up with 32" and 37" "Gamer" versions. Check this....
Saturday, a Best Buy store salesmen looked in his computer and said "the warehouse has just received 27 in stock, of the 37" Sharp LC37GP!U, list price $1799, if you order one now you can pick it up here in 7 days and we'll pay the 5% Sales tax".
Same day, another BB store, next town, offered "no sales tax" deal for 32" Sharp LC32GP1U ("warehouse just got 185 of them, I can have one for u in 7 days, you pay list price $1425").

I got mine yesterday and hooked it up, the one problem I'm having is in the nVidia display settings, it keeps detecting the native resolution of the set as 1360x768, although it displays 1920x1080 just fine. Also, since it thinks the native resolution is 1360x768, the control panel keeps setting it to use the display's scaling to scale the resolution. I can set this to "Do not scale" and hit apply, but each time I reopen the control panel it goes back to "Use the displays built-in scaling"

Anyone know how to fix this?

I've been nibbling on both ends of this thread, but haven't gotten all the way through it yet, so apologies if this has already been discussed...

The LC32GP1U seems to be exactly the compromise I've been looking for. It strikes a balance between suitability for PC use at 2-3' and video/console use at 6-8'. Having relied on a 19" CRT (Samsung 900NF) for these purposes until now, I'm very excited about the prospect of an upgrade.

However, since I don't have the PC horsepower to game at the native resolution of this display, I'm concerned that my PC gaming experience might suffer--particularly in performance-intensive games where selecting the right resolution is critical.

The GP1U has a healthy number of preset display modes (as many as Dell's 2707), but what happens if I try to run at something in between? Can it handle it? Is this an area where an LCD "monitor" would be more flexible than a "TV" even though the specs are similar?

Also, are there any unusual fill/scaling issues for resolutions other than the TV-oriented 1080/720/480 ones? Am I correct in assuming that something like 1024x768 could be made to fill the screen with black bars on the sides?

If you install one of the newer Nvidia drivers, it asks you during Setup: "Use new Nvidia control panel?" (umm, words something, like that).
A poster (was it in a Sharp thread in the AVS Forums that I saw it ?) told a guy who had exactly your problem:
That he should mouse around in new nvidia ctrl-panel (or even the old "classic" nvidia ctrl--panel) until he finds an option that asks something like:
"SETUP MONITOR AS AN LCD-TV ??"
If I remember right, the guy seemed to say choosing 'yes' would eliminate the pesky problem.
If I find the Post I'll print it here. Good luck

The resolutions the Video card has listed in its control panel-----are the resolutions the Video card WILL run the Monitor at.
If you select a rez NOT listed there, the Monitor will NOT run it.
If I'm wrong in this I welcome correction from anyone.

Cool I appreciate the suggestion, but I can't find this option anywhere in the control panel, and I have the very latest 158.18 drivers installed.

Okay to follow up on this, I have a Westinghouse 42w2 that I have hooked up to my Media Center PC, and so I did a little comparison, since I find the text to be a bit fuzzy/unclear on the Sharp up close. I opened IE up to MSN on both computers, and sure enough, the text/pictures on the Westinghouse are clearer and sharper.

I have no idea if this has to do with my above issue, if its somehow scaling the image? But if I can't find some way to resolve this, I'm tempted to sell this LCD and just pick up a 37" Westy for $999 if it's that much sharper.

Zorn, there's a Thread at avsforums.com: "Sharp Aquos GP1U (32" and 37") Series Discussion".
(one of 3 "Sharp" threads that are active enuff so they're nearly always on Page 1 in "Flat Panel Displays" forum).
In that Thread they go deep into tweaking the Sharp and finding Answers.
By all means, check it out before u throw up your hands.
On P.28 of above Thread I found this post.
The top part is an 'ANSWER' (it's kinda vague) to a 'QUESTION' (describing the same problem u have).
Here it is.....

I see you have a newer video card.
There is a setting in the Nvidia control panel to setup the display as a TV.
I believe there is even a TV wizard.

QUESTION:
by RaBoot
Hi... my LC37GP1U , while using it for my PC, tells me (thru NVIDIA's Control Panel...8800GTX) that it's native resolution is 1360x768.
Why is it not 1920x1080? Is this normal?
My last HDTV (Sceptre 37) appeared to have native 1920x1080.
The screen is clear at 1360 x 768 (and larger) than 1920 x1080, which is clear but smaller.
Only thing I can think of that is different, is my Sceptre was connected with a DVI - HDMI cable, and the Sharp is connected with DVI - DVI cable.
Thanks for any help.

Best buy in shreveport, la has them in stock, even had one on display. I might buy one to try it out and if I like it....then return it to buy cheaper online =)

Best buy sticker price was $1499 which to me is alot for a 32".

Can anyone explain how this display handles the sleep signal when Windows goes into power-saving mode? Just a black screen, or does the display itself go into a power-saving mode? Any idea whether it's safe to leave this display on 24/7 as long as it's connected to a sleeping PC?

Zorn, here's another post (see bottom of this post) that deals with Nvidia card erroneously saying Sharp has "native rez of 1360x768".
Also, you mention "fuzzy text." Well, I remember seeing complaints that Sharp had "motion blur" in games. This was eliminated by turning off Sharp's "Noise Reduction".
So what the heck, you've nothing to lose-----see if that also fixes your "fuzzy text" problem.
Are you running Vista? A savvy tech who repairs problems in PCs told me: "Stick with WinXP until WinVista gets all its many ,many, glitches ironed out with a Service Pack".
Also, try a different Nvidia driver. Sometimes a newer Nvidia driver introduces a problem an older driver didn't have. It happened to me.
Consider talking to KevinJ, a software engineer (see him below, helping a guy with same problem as you).
He posts in Sharp threads (there's 3 of them) at AVS Forums ('lcd flat panel display forum').

My NVIDIA shows a native of 1920x1080P. Of course I probably have a newer video card in my Dell D820.
In my NVIDIA panel there was a selection to setup the output for a TV.
So you may want to check your settings, or, if a newer video driver helps with these settings and new NVIDIA control panel.

Thanks, Kevin:
I now see it's a "Vista" (Ultimate) thing.
I have the 8800GTX with NVIDIA's latest drivers and it tells me the Native res. is "1360x768".
I am able to push it up to 1920x1080, though sometimes after a startup, it will only go as high as 1440x900, but after a couple of reboots it'll let me go back to 1920x1080.
Also, Win XP Pro (I dual boot) does NOT have this problem, (I'm running latest drivers) and the new Control Panel let's me "Treat display as a HDTV."
"Vista" does NOT give me that option and I do NOT see all the settings that I see in WinXP.
I'll have to live with this, until either NVIDIA or Vista get it straight. Thank you for your help.

In honor of the gigantic westy thread, I'm starting a new one for the Sharp GP1U gaming 1080p displays.

Here's what I am replacing (dual Apple 23"):
desk.jpg

Could you PLEASE tell me where you got that clock and chair??? :D

I got mine today! :D I loving this thing 2x as much since it cost me $750(Sharp discount program at work). It has a few stuck pixels, but you won't notice them unless you actually try to look for them. I definitely need a new desk now though, haha.

I got mine for the same price, and you just can't beat it. I don't think I'd pay retail price for it over the Westinghouse though. I'm still debating whether I want to try and sell it for a profit and put the cash towards a 3007WFP-HC. I just worry that without 8800 SLI I wouldn't be able to run newer games very smoothly on it.

I thought about getting the 37 or $900, but I think the 37 would be WAY too big. 32 is kinda stretching it, but its so awesome.

So yeah, here's a question, what kind of graphics card do you all think would be required to run the Sharp 32(or the Westy 37) and 1080p, and a secondary 22" samsung at 1650:1050?

I'm running an 7900gs right now, and before I buy this badboy I want to make sure I know if I'm going to have to get a 8800 of somekind.

The ONLY game I play is EvE Online, what can I say, I'm an addicted MMO player, with limited playtimes ;)

Oh yeah, and what discount program? Is it something BestBuy Employee's can get in on?

I have an X1950 Pro and it works pretty well at 1920x1080. I play WoW at max settings, but if I enable AA it starts to take a hit in performance, but I don't really use AA anyway.

Guys just letting you know Best Buy has it on their website now for 10% off. If you order online you can get a free Pioneer 860W 5.1-Channel Home Theater System with Progressive-Scan DVD/CD Player.

• Sharp Aquos LC-37GP1U

• Free Home Theater System with a purchase of a TV $1,499 and up

• Pioneer 860W 5.1-Channel Home Theater System with Progressive-Scan DVD/CD Player

I am really thinking about Best Buy’s deal. Since Father's Day is coming up and my dad just bought a 37" HDTV for the den I could give him the 5.1 system, and have the ability to return the LC-37GP1U to the store if necessary. I already have Klipsch Promedia 5.1’s for my room so another 5.1 stereo would be pointless. The price is around my budget also.

I don't have a definite summer job yet, and I really wanted to wait until I have a source of income, but I don't know how long this deal is going to last. I guess I could ask my mom to pay for the package, and then pay her half once I've received everything and made sure everything worked. Then during the summer when I have a job I could pay her the rest. I am sure she would work out a deal with me considering I want to give my dad the brand new 5.1 stereo as a gift, ;)

I don't think I was quite clear. I want to be able to run dual monitors off one card. I'm doing so right now with my 22" Samsung, and a 17 Proview running at 1650X1050 and 1280X1024, but I want to know if people think a 7900gs would be enough umph to push a 1080p TV and the 22" Samsung at the same time.

Oh, sorry, I somehow skipped that last part of the sentence. Sorry though, I couldn't tell ya.

And yes, it's something Best Buy employees get in on.

I bit on the 37" deal from bestbuy. I let you guys know how everything works out.

I have this exact same setup at home...Use a 8800GTS. Runs smooth as hell with Fear maxxed out settings and native resses.

Just bought the 32" at a local best buy today. they had 3 in stock, but it wasnt on display.
the price was $1,349.99 on sale. Reg. Price price was $1,499.99. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8274388&st=LC-32GP1U&type=product&id=1171057791721 All in all not a bad deal. I would have paid the same buying from newegg and at least now I get a 30 day return policy.

There are 2 stuck pixels near the topish middle of the screen. Hopefully I can unstick them, if not its not to big of a deal, I'm sitting about 30" away from the screen. If I back up just a bit more I can hardly even see them.

Also I should add the dynamic contrast thing really isn't even hardly noticeable. Other posters are blowing it way out of proportion I think.

One thing I would love though is some sort of adjustable stand. that or i just need to get some sort of riser or platform to raise it up a bit. Its just slightly too low for my tastes.

I agree on the contrast changing. I barely notice it. But mine too has a few stuck pixels, but I seriously did not notice them until i actually tried to look for it. I'm very satisfied with this purchase.

I just saw this at Best Buy and I admit its gorgeous. Dont know that I can afford it though - $1,499 + tax - maybe father's day?

Anyway, at what distance should you be (how close) if your going to use it mostly as a computer monitor?

I would say 30" min.

also dont forget to have your local best buy price match the online price!

I'm about 26-28 inches from my monitor.

Also, what settings do you all use when using it for your PC?

A guy at another forum suggests this, so this is what I use:

OPC: Off
Backlight: +5
Contrast: +30
Brightness: +0
Color: -5
Tint: 0
Sharpness: -5
Color Temp: Medium Low? (not lowest, but the one above it)
Enhanced Blacks: Off

I have my sharpness turned down all the way. otherwise I notice weird artifacts on pictures while browsing the web. I also have my backlight turned down to -5.

I think it does that at anything above -3. Try playing a game, and fluctuate between -3 and -4, you'll probably see a huge difference.

Pictures were taken with my Canon Powershot G3 using +0 exposure.
