I think my RAM went because my comp screen turns all pink/purple and funky colors and freezes or just shuts down. This happens AFTER it boots up, so i'm thinking its the RAM.

If I need new RAM, is it worth spending money on pc3200? I do play games and such and haven't upgraded in a while, but not sure if i feel it's necessary to totally upgrade my comp considering it did handle CS source rather well.

What do you guys think?

My mobo = Asus k8n-e

Ok, so your video is fuct, yet you think its a ram issue?

Try another vidcard first. Or try your vidcard in someone elses system. Also, try another monitor.

To test the ram, run memtest overnight.

What are you system specs? We need that info to give our opinion on whether you should upgrade the whole system or not. DDR isnt as expensive as it used to be.

I dont see how it would be the video card considering it randomly works then doesn't...thought it would be a RAM issue.

I have 1gb pc3200corsair xms ram
EVGA 5800gt video card
Asus k8n-e mobo

Well, it could be the ram, but I'd definately check the vidcard first. So did you run memtest? It could also be the vga cable or monitor.

So uh, you got a CPU in that thing? :p If you want better gaming performance, pickup a new vidcard.

It's an nVidia 5-series. Need I say more?

It could be the RAM, but the funky colors issue makes me think you should take nerd's advice and check the video route first. Video cards have memory chips as well, you know. That could be the issue just as easily as your system memory.

It's *likely* to be the video card because you're getting a visual problem. RAM problems will tend to either cause a failure to boot or cause full system crashes (often with BSOD's)

Purple artifacts on the screen is classic Gfx failure as well, in my experience tends to be preceeded by small purple/green flashes for a couple of months before, though I've seen one case of sudden failure.

1) Test another video card, if the problem goes away you need a new card

2) If you still have a problem and your card has a molex connection on it, try a new PSU, preferably a better brand or wattage than you currently have.

3) If not, try a new motherboard

4) If still not working, give up buy a new PC, now is a perfect time to upgrade :)

I dont have a vid card to fit in the slot that my mobo provides, and I feel if i buy the pc3200 ram which is obsolete already, it's a waste of money, so I can blow like $500 on "testing" or just spend around 1300 and buy a new comp

It is an eVGA card, just send in for an RMA.

I'll eat my socks if it is the RAM. There is no way RAM would cause failure like that.

I was typing to you guys on my laptop before and i felt like trying to give my comp another go, and now it's working...so I'll see how long it stays on before bugging out again.

I fought with a similar issue for quite some time, intermittent artifacting, random crashing, finally a BSOD and it was the video card. It can, and does happen.

Since your machine is currently running, go ahead and run Memtest for as long as possible and see if you get any errors..

Just because RAM stands for random access memory, doesnt mean if something randomly fails, its the RAM :-p

So thats what his train of thought was? hehehehe

Well, if you want to build a new system, we can help with that, too. What are your needs? does that $1300 include a monitor? If not, what size monitor will you be using?

Hmmm, something tells me he was looking for an excuse to upgrade....LOL! Not that there's anything wrong with that!

I know what RAM stands for, thanks lol

And yea, I'd love to upgrade, but I just spent 3k on a tv and don't want to right now.

Really? Which TV did you get? I'm in the market for one, now. :D

The best LCD out is the Sony XBR...I got the 40XBR2...absolutely amazing. 3 HDMI inputs make it great..got my cable and dvd player on HDMI.

I picked up the omnimount mount for it so it comes out and swivels and goes in portait as well.
