Hello all. My 8600GTS is giving me some strange problems when playing games. Sometimes the screen will just turn completely white (and sometimes grey), but the system isn't locked up, just the video is. After hard restarting (the only option) windows reports that it has recovered from a serious error blah blah blah.. and that it was the driver getting stuck. Just wondering if anyone else had similar problems and if this is yet another chapter in the unending nvidia driver problem saga.

Vista? XP? Overclocked? Stock speeds?

If you're in Vista at stock speeds, and you have the means, I'd try to replicate the problem with Windows XP. If it still happens with Windows XP, then I'd start suspecting a hardware problem.

Remember, just because the driver is stated to be the problem by an error message, you can't really be sure that this is the case. BSODs and other error messages are only making their "best guess" based on what quit working correctly. But, of course, bad RAM, or a bad video card, or even a bad motherboard can cause a sequence of events that might cause the video driver to crash, thus generating an error message naming the video driver as a culprit. . . when in fact, the problem is actually hardware-based.

I'm having a similar problem in Vista home premium with 158.18 drivers. My XFX 8600gts xxx is locking up every few mins in WoW and the screen flashes back. Windows Vista is also reporting a driver issue and gives me this tidbit

'LiveKernelEvent' and has the following extra information:
BCCode: 117
BCP1: 8722DF38
BCP2: 8A81F060
BCP3: 0000000C
BCP4: 00000000
OS Version: 6_0_6000
Service Pack: 0_0
Product: 256_1
Server information: 00084564-7d0e-40e3-a9e1-1c97224709ac

Dunno what's up with it, but it's really frustrating

Sorry, I was a bit tired when I posted the thread. I'm running XP and the card is at stock clock speed. The rest of the computer was rock solid stable before the 8600.

Seeing as we both have the same card (the XFX 8600GTS XXX), could it be a problem with that card perhaps? Anyone else having problems like this?

Interesting. I just tried downclocking the card via the drivers 20MHz on the core and the memory. The I fired up Colin McRae 05 and started playing (I had the temperature monitor up on my secondary screen, which got kinda high actually, up to 86 degrees C). Nothing bad happened when it was downclocked. After finishing one race I tried putting it back to normal clock speed for the card (730/1130x2) and temps stayed the same. I got through the entire race and as soon as I crossed the finish line the entire screen went green, and the secondary one went black and I had to hard restart again. I'll have to experiment more but it appears that the card has problems at factory settings that are not temp related.

Its a temp problem. Basically the card is not quite stable at X core speeds when it passes y temp Thus buying an after market cooler should do the trick.

Hmmm. Well the idle temp is 67 degrees C. When I was playing games it went up to 83 degrees C. I'll try playing with the system's fan settings. I was thinking because the airflow direction on the 8600GTS is reverse from my 7900GT that it might cause some problems with my shuttle's airflow. Cause my 7900GT was overclocked quite a bit and it had plenty of airflow.

I originally was running the drivers that came with the card. They were 100.something, I don't remember exactly. Games ran like crap and had strange errors but it didn't crash. With the new drivers games run awesome, surprisingly well for this card but the card causes the system to hang sometimes.
Right now I have the core downclocked by 10MHz and I've been playing games for a good hour with the temps averaging around 83 degrees (does this card run hot or what?) without anything going wrong.

edit: nevermind.. right as I hit the submit button the screen on my pc turned white and the system froze.

I'm seriously considering talking with newegg about returning the card and just going back to my 7900GT, which wasn't all that much slower.

OT: Does the 7900GT support CSAA which I have come to love so much on my new 8600GTS? That's the one thing that's amazing about the 8600GTS, being able to run games at 16xAA SS and 16xAF with no performance hit.

Hey ALPHAONE is the ERROR one of these after the system restarts!!!! Will it do it if you set your memory to 2100mhz?
The memory could be faulting at the Manufacture speed ,thus setting stuck thread ERROR because the driver and card can not communicate with that clock setting.Try lowering.. memmory first if that dosnt work then try DRIVERCLEANER AND REINSTALL DRIVER ,,If that dosnt work read below this box..

I OVERCLOCKED MINE With out any ISSUE ,also i set my memory above 2300mhz to see if i could simulate your problem ..It crashed with out the Driver ERROR ....So Check your Clocks you may want to RMA or exchange that card for XFX8600GTS 720 instead

...Stop 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER

OR IS IT THIS ONE

STOP: 0x100000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER_M

if so Its most likely bad DRIVER INSTALL.... THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE FOR NVIDIA CARDS WITH NEWER THAN 93.71 DRIVERS

Also BFGtech and EVGA are Both aware of this but unshure about XFX . Nvidia i know KNOWS from reading the Numerous complaints in several Game forums! If the VIDEO CARD FAILS TO INSTALL , NO MATTER WHAT DRIVER ,you will most likely need to Clean install VISTA or XP ...If this Does not solve your problem ..Them you may need to RMA sorry for the Knews.... I myself Have NO ISSUE WITh THE 158.19driver in X64 XP pro...

It was one of those. I think it was the first one. I'll try doing what you suggested. If it's not gonna perform at the factory clock speeds I think I'm just gonna rma it for a refund and get an 8800GTS this summer when I'm at home and no longer need a tv tuner in my computer. I might do that anyway..

Hey if you send it back maybe pick an Evga and use the step up when time comes..That would give you 90days till next best thing from Nvidia just thinking bro..

Oh yeah mine is 100%stble at factory unclocked speeds....

I would say its thier pick of memmory and the GPU clock setting on that card ,I couldnt expect every card made to run smooth even a new one ....i guess i got lucky
