I have a Leadtek WinFast A400 LE TDH GeForce 6800LE in one of my computers and it has been showing artifacts for a little while. They pop up in graphics in IE and Windows and in games. Lately it has gotten worse. It now is not displaying colors properly sometimes or it flashes back and forth from normal to abnormal colors.

When the artifacting started I removed the stock (huge copper block heatsink) and installed a NV Silencer 5. After using the silencer for a while it started shifting the colors. The temp is usually around 52C or less. I only play starcraft on it and surf the web.

I used a program a while back to try and unlock pipes (Riva tuner). It had heavy artifacting so I turned it back. Can this damage the card? I never OC'd it. I can't take the silencer back off without ripping the memory pads off because they are stickers

Thanks for any help you can give me.

It's very strange. Sometimes I can go for a while without seeing any artifacts. Other times they pop up here and there. I re-seated the card, but that did not help. I cleaned all the dust out.

Can the power supply cause this. It a cheap PS that came with the $150 computer that I bought from Outpost.

Sempron @ 1.9GHZ, 220FSB
1GB Kingston Hyper X DDR 400
741GX-M Mobo

I am going to try using a new power supply and we will see what happens. Anyone have any suggestions?

Switched to a more powerful Antec 400W power supply and guess what? Nothing, same issues. I don't like where this is going. Does anyone know if unlocking and then relocking pipes can cause video card damage?

no, unlocking the pipes won't damage it.

i had the exact same card as yours and unfortunately it started to artifact too. rma-ed mine.

Thanks for the info. I think I am F@#$ out of luck. The warranty is only 1 year and I bout it almost 3 years ago. I sent an RMA request we will see what happens. I am gonna ride this card out until it dies. Maybe I can find a 6600 agp for cheap. What companies have lifetime warrant on their cards aside from BFG?

That 6800XT really won't compare to your LE. I'd say the XT's 128-bit memory bus will hurt it performance significantly. However, it is kind of hard to know since I can't find the clocks on that card anywhere. I would recommend a standard 6800 if you can find one that is not too expensive, it will be faster than either of these.

Well they e-mailed back an RMA number. I gues I will send it out and see what happens. How do you take off a NV Silencer?

Awesome. I received my new 6800LE today. It has a different cooler on it then my last one, which is probably a good thing. Leadtek rocks!!!!!!!

Now I just have to install it and see if it works. Maybe I will have better luck and be able to unlock the pipes on this one.

Spoke too soon. I see the same issue coming back slowly. Might be the motherboard. Its a cheapie and I have my cpu OC'd. I will try to lower the overclock and see if it corrects the issue.
