Hey all,

I've been way into computers for awhile but am just getting into the PC gaming world... weird and lame, I know. I'm wanting to pick up a really, really great RTS game. I just finished Far Cry and am up for a step back from the FPS world for awhile. The two titles I've had recommended to me lately are Age of Empires III and Command and Conquer: Generals. Any opinions on these two are welcome. My specs are in my signature - anything you can think of that takes advantage of all that and still is a good time, let me know! Any other recommendations are also appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the thread link - still looking for anyone who would recommend AOE3 over C&C or vice versa and why. All help appreciated! Thx.

i think AOE is more about resource management than combat...C&C is the opposite. So it depends on what you like to do. I happen to love the AOE series. Mainly cuz i can take the time to build up everything and then decide to create a big ass army to storm someone else.

Company of Heroes
Supreme Commander
Command & Conquer 3

A couple of games I've been playing a lot lately:
Rome: Total War
Medieval II: Total War

Technically they're not pure RTS games as there is a turn-based portion in the campaign but the actual battles are real time and can get pretty epic when two large armies collide.

Supreme Commander
Company of Heroes
Command & Conquer 3

All new, all awesome, 100% 1337.

Don't forget Dark Crusade.

blackinches agrees. blackinches thinks that warhammer 40k dawn of war and its expansions are great games.

blackinches thought that homeworld 2 was a pretty neat rts game. though a bit more complex because it was in space and actually used 3 dimensions for the battles.

blackinches hates blizzard games. nothing but a bunch of ripped off ideas. blackinches also does not like the fact that tanks cannot run people over in starcraft. so stupid.

Thanatos agrees with blackinches Homeworld 1 and 2 were really great RTS games. First game Thanatos ever bought was Homeworld.

Anything by Relic is a good bet. Dawn of War was great, as well as its expansions. It's been surpassed only by Company of Heroes. I haven't played Homeworld but have heard nothing but good things about it.

I'd also recommend anything in the Total War series. Medieval 2 is simply awesome for the sheer scale of its battles and units available.

DawnOfWar

Got really pissed off with the majority of RTS where it was all abt harvesting something or another and thus the harvesters became the prime targets
DoW twists this with stratigic points that as long as you hold them you get requisition to spend.

Simcity 4 is more addictive than any other RTS I've played. The Black & White games were good too, as was the original Total Annihilation (the granddaddy of SupCom). ;)

Myth III and any of the Total War II games.

I'm a sucker for Myth. Such a great little game there.

blackinches also likes ground control II. blackinches likes to use the artillery to just force fire into choke points. that is good clean fun for blackinches.

blackinches also recommends trying brothers in arms. it's kind of a first person real time strategy game hybrid.

blackinches also loves civilization IV. though not a real time game, that game is addicting. almost as addicting as blackinches' personality. try it and lose many many hours.

dude, its really creepy how you refer to yourself in the third person.

its only creepy if you are touching yourself while reading his posts.... are you ?

:D

anyways, ground control was cool! I don't remember if the sequel was good though. Also Supreme Commander is a supreme life waster. A mission can last well over an hour. Fun though.

Company of Heroes is still the king.

But if you prefer the really fast, spammy kind of RTS, then you'd probably be more happy with C&C. Or maybe even Sup Com.
