So I am a mac Id10t and I am trying to switch. I need some help with some software. I want to try and stick with Open sorced software as much as possible, but I don't mind paying for some really good shareware.

In the windows world I use the following software:

3dftp
7zip
bitlord
CDXPpro
Norton Antivirus
zone alarm
Photochop
Nero

I already have :

Audacity
OpenOffice
Firefox
Opera
thunderbird

What else would you suggest

Xtorrent for your torrents.

And you won't really need Anti-virus.

I hate it when people say this. The whole "Mac's don't get virii so you don't need an AV program" is getting rediculous. Mac users can still receive an infected file and pass it on to Windows users. Then there are some types of malware that'll affect any system no matter what kind it is (e.g. macro virii) While it's true that you're not very likely to get a virus that'll affect you, you can very easily get a virus that'll affect any Windows user that you interact with.

Anti-Virus = ClamX AV http://www.markallan.co.uk/clamXav/ to protect the other people you are in contact with.

When I find The Unarchiver is lacking I use UnRarX http://unrarx.sourceforge.net/

There are sometimes those passworded or strangly tagged ones that The Unarchiver won't do.

RSS Aggregator = NetNewsFire; I use just NewsFire though because I got it in a bundle.

http://macspecialist.org/content/articles/essential_apps/ is a good list of Apps too.

http://www.opensourcemac.org/ is a compilation of popular open-source (free) apps for OS X

http://osx.iusethis.com/ is another good site to find apps; has a top list and tags for each type of app.

For any kind of IM'ing you should use AdiumX at http://www.adiumx.com and you can personalize it even more at http://www.adiumxtras.com Amazing IM app, I can't find anything better.

Firefox for Mac is kinda on the slow side, so I use the Intel-specific builds from http://www.beatnikpad.com

Umm... If you want a free office suite, check out http://www.neooffice.org which is OpenOffice built to run natively on OS X; I personally use MS Office:Mac 2004 and even though it's a PPC app it runs very well and some people think it's crazy but I like the seperate floating windows...

Umm. I use TextMate for text editing, it's shareware, but text-wrangler is also pretty good and is free.

I use Disco along with Roxio's Toast 8 for burning, and even Disk Utility too.

I purchased QT Pro as it's very useful on a Mac. But I use ffmpeg which is donationware to encode all my stuff to iTunes/QT format out of habit.

And umm.. http://www.virtuedesktops.info is dead now (again) but the application is pretty stable and runs well and makes my Mac experience more enjoyable.

Right umm, Xtorrent is shareware and I find Azureus is better anyway... so pick up Azureus http://azureus.sourceforge.net/ for your torrents. Transmission is blocked on many trackers because it doesn't really play nice.

I also use XSlimmer http://www.xslimmer.com/ to remove the power-pc components from apps that are Universal Binary. It's saved me a TON of space by removing those.

And alongside removing the unnecesarry components, you should, and everyone should use Monolingual http://monolingual.sourceforge.net/ to remove the excess languages from all their apps and even the ones apple included in the original install. I generally check to remove everything except English and English (United States); but it'd be different for everyone I suppose. Don't mess with the other tabs in that app unless you know exactly what they pertain to, removing architectures completely using monolingual can *REALLY* mess up Rosetta.

When I'm using GIMP I pick gimpshop instead, which is a GIMP hack that makes it all much more like photoshop.

And UNO 1.5 just got released YAY!

Show me one that'll affect the mac? I know eventually it will happen but till someone can post up a real threat (and no the ONE known virus for OS X is not a real threat) I'll continue to run no anti-virus on my macs. The fact that they can get passed to windows users is their problem, not mine ;)

Gimp is deffinatly awesome...

Aduium X is the best chat program for the Mac IMO.

Also, Grab VLC. Its a good Video player

I was talking about macro viruses that affect applications that run in both Windows and Mac (such as MS Word). SInce all they are is a series of comands passed on to the "host" program. But the spreading (or rather the prevention of spreading) of malware is everybody's concern. If you don't care the least bit about whether or not you pass something on to those you are in contact with, at least do the polite thing and tell them you don't care if you give them a virus. I'm sure they'll understand.

false argument, because you assume that their virus scanner will not catch it. how about this: everyone watch his own ass.

I'd say it's safe to say that not all virus scanners are created equally, and the average joe PC user thinks Norton and/or McAffe are hot shit when we all here know that those are probably the absolute last applications you would want to install on a PC.

Yea, be careful with monolingual, I broke all my rosetta apps once with it and had to reinstall os x and the whole works....

so, what if a mac user is just as uninformed as your average PC user? are mac users obliged to be more informed to help the less fortunate PC users?

what's wrong with everyone worrying about their own computer again?

That's right! Be courteous to your fellow computer brethren. We don't want people to get infected.
calm down, he's talking about his own computer.

I agree with the mac users why waste your valuable cpu cycles for something that wont infect their system, sorry but my windows machines use a virus scanner, why would I wanna waste cpu cycles on a virus scanner if I am running linux/bsd/osx etc. etc. Sorry but I think its up to you to protect yourself.

and yes I do not use any virus scanners on my linux machines.

I think you're reading too far into my post...

and what is wrong is everyone looking out for each other?
because I choose to use linux and apple because I don't have time to worry about infections and deal with malware. I don't have time to look out for anyone else. I don't intentionally infect anyone of course, but your computer problems belong to you, and mine to me.
