So what if they have similar libraries (especially now that exclusives are becoming multiplatform games)?
Is that really so bad?
That you have to choose between getting one for Microsoft games (Halo, Mass Effect, etc.), or Sony games (God of War, Heavenly Sword, Resistance, etc.)?

It's all a matter of preference and I don't understand why people are jumping for joy at the fact that a game is going multiplatform (DMC4). Like that automatically makes the PS3 a failure.
Is it?

As consumers, we should all be happy every time a game goes cross-platform.

Unless you're such a raving fanb0y for the 360 or PS3 that you can't realize that this benefits us all in the end.

Games used to be on a more "multiplatform basis"
back in the arcade scene / sega days until sony and microsoft
tried to monopolize the market.

Uh, games started going away from being multi-platform well before MS even entered the market. Late in the Genesis/SNES war it started. It hit its stride during the PS/Saturn/N64 generation.

The reason why I think DMC4 coming to 360 is awesome is because I will now be able to play it without having to play it on PS3 --> which I don't have.

I'm very thankful when big games go multiplatform.

No way i can afford a PS3 anytime soon. There's a little fan boy in me who loves Halo 3 being x360 only, but i cry about MGS4 not coming.

Multiplatfrorm is good for the consumer. But like most things good for us = bad for the companies.

Whenever a previous Sony exclusive comes to the 360 I don't jump for joy because it makes the PS3 a failure....but rather because now I don't have to buy another expensive console just to enjoy a certain game. Sony scored a lot of exclusives with the PS2 for good reason, but those reasons don't really exist anymore. Like someone above mentioned...if either companies first party/in-house games are a "must have" to you then you'll buy the console for that. The fact of the matter is that Sony made their hardware too complicated and expensive to make games for which means that only the big name, heavy hitter game houses will make PS3 games. The good part is that even though the PS3 library will be much smaller than the PS2's....there probably won't be as many crap games from no-name developers looking to make a quick buck.

I'm sure most of the whining/ranting about PS3 roots from the price of it..again shit we already know right? 360's been out for a longer time than the PS3/wii has so yeah naturally their library/support will be higher..I have some hope that Sony will get better games rolling out - even if they lose an exclusive or two, you know which systems gonna play it better.

QFT. Gamers like games, they're not "consolers". I don't want games to come out as exclusives on a console I don't already own, that just means I have to spend more money to play it. If it goes multiplatform and ends up on a console I already own, then I just play it.

I like multi-platform games, especially big titles! Next year I won't have to worry about exclusives any more.

Obviously you mean the 360. After all, CoD3 and AC4, the only two games I've seen run head-to-head on both systems, both look better on the 360.

And it's not even close. The shaders on the PS3 apparently can't keep up with the rich blacks on the 360.

Or the devs are half ass programming on the PS3 due to the current difficulty with the dev kits.

Id be more inclined to compare cross platform games in a year or two.

Exclusive titles are good for both consumers and vendors because it creates a competition to create better games. If both PS3 and Xbox360 got the exact same games they wouldn’t be racing to new ideas and technology but more like slowing walking while holding hands. I think if we eliminate the exclusive titles the quality of the games will slowly start to drop, but I could be wrong.

Very true. Look at GoW2 vs. early PS2 games and that system was notoriously difficult to program for also.

After reading a couple of articles about the technical differences between the PS3 and 360 hardware...I don't see any miracles forthcoming on the PS3 as far as graphics go. Considering that the Blu-ray drive has nothing to do with the games themselves...I expect games on both platforms to look/play essentially the same with a few minor graphical differences that really make no difference at all. For the last generation you always heard that if you have a PS2 and an Xbox..and the game comes out for both then you should get the Xbox version because it will look better/have shorter load times. I don't think the difference between the PS3 and 360 is going to be like that this time around..

I didn't post the DMC 4 thread as a jab to Sony; rather, I'm elated because I really enjoy the DMC series and don't feel like spending another $500 minimum to enjoy a good game. I'm all for cross-platform gaming of any kind as it benefits us (the consumer).

The DMC series has always been a PS exluclusive and could have been labeled a system seller. Now along with SO MANY other PS exlucsives, its coming to the 360. The question people are now asking ...

Why pay $200 more for a PS3 when nearly all its exclusivies are becoming available on the cheaper 360 ?

blu-ray and JRPG only reason I'm getting one, and JRPG's aren't coming out for a long time so it will be a while before I have to buy one.

Fair enough, the PS3 is a good console. The reason people are making a huge fuss these days is because Sony was the undisputed KING on consoles. They outsold both Nintendo and Microsoft over 4 fold last gen (think over 100 million to 25/28 million) and its just a snowball effect happening with Sony.

Its sort of like grabbing some popcorn and watching the giant crumble.

The Xbox 360 currently has three solid JRPG's coming out this year - Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and Eternal Sonata. This is in additional to the more Western RPG's like Mass Effect. I know it sounds weird, but in all likelihood we'll see more RPG titles on the 360 than the PS3 in 2007.

I, too, am very interested in a Blu-Ray player to be dual [HD] format, but I simply do not have another $500 to invest in another console with (currently) limited software.

You don't? how about because people with 360s will now be able to play a game that was highly anticipated on another system....it's not rocket science to realize why people with 360s are excited.

It's all a matter of console fans seemingly having to choose the (one) system they want before a new generation comes out. Once that decision has been made, you're required to defend it to everyone. If you don't have a system, you're required to belittle it and all who do.
Multiplatform games are your enemy, and if they do occur, the version for your system IS the best one. Rather than looking at it being good that your system managed to get a new game, you have to look at "that worthless system I didn't buy lost an exclusive! They = TEH SUXXX"

I think you hit that there nail on the head, right there. Though, I'll also add in the effect of the anti-sony "activists" scurrying around gaming forums. They are in the Xbox/PS3 debate for reasons not entirely related to gaming or game consoles, but rather to attack Sony for their "sins" ('rootkit' and all). Though, interestingly they end up supporting Microsoft, a far more evil and far more powerful enemy.

I don't know about that. I dislike the PS3, and it certainly has nothing to do with rootkit. Quite frankly, the only problem I have with Sony itself is that it's marketing seems to be run by a bunch of monkies. Other than that, I don't hold any dislike towards the PS3 becaues its from Sony. I dislike it because it currently does not have a good line up, it's to expensive, and its freaking fugly. I will own one some day, if for no other reason, for God of War 3 and Kingdom Hearts 3, both of which are inveitable. My only hope is that by the time I see those, I will see many more games that interest me on the platform, a cheaper price tag, and something that doen't look like a george forman grill (Logic says in due time they will release a reworked, smaller version on the console). I also hope, that by the time I get it, BluRay is the dominant HD-Movie, or it has totally flopped, and the price of the console has been adjusted to reflect such. I won't buy a device using either HD format until one is victorious, and I sure as shit won't be happy buying something with the failed format after one wins, even if its used for more than movies.

I agree about Sony's marketing...every time I hear someone from Sony talk about the PS3... visions of John Romero "making me his bitch" with Daikatana comes to mind.:p As far as the Blu-ray vs HD-DVD thing goes I couldn't give a rats ass about either, but it may be a long time before a clear winner is crowned now that dual format players are close to being on the shelves. Like you, at some point I can see myself buying a PS3 but I currently have no burning desire to plop down 600 bucks for a 1080p movie player that won't do my 720p plasma any great favors and also to play Motorstorm. (the only exclusive out now that interests me)

Heh, the thing is, i've got the TV. 37" Westy, 1080p all ready to go. But, I'm still not jumping onto either format until one takes off, or there is a reasonably priced dual format player (under $300). Until then, I'll just have to twiddle my thumbs and deal with upscaled DVD's.

Yeah I won an xbox360 so all three of them are mine when they come out. Also 3 JRPG's in 2 years isn't good odds. The PS3 will have well over 3 JRPG's after its second year, but then again if the 3 rpg's on xbox sell well it might start an RPG trend which would be a refreshing change from the lame FPS the xbox has been cursed with.

I lost my console favoritism with Sega now I just go were the RPG’s go safest bet for me.

What RPGs are slated for the PS3? I know there must be companies working on them, but if they haven't even announced a name or screenies for it, it's unlikely that it will arrive in the US before the end of 2008. We'd had FF screenies for awhile and even that's not estimated to release until 2008.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm honestly curious to know if you have any links to upcoming games.

Well, right now we have Enchanted Arms. That's one.

After Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, that's three. But there's also Eternal Sonata. So there's actually 4 by the end of this year. :)

Which is actually all the Dreamcast had its entire life, and by that time in the PS2's life, there were only really 4 or 5 out anyway.

Nippon Ichi Software -- Makai Wars
Atlus --Shin Megami Tensei
Level 5 --white knight story
Gust -- Unamed

These 4 companies are working for just Sony as of right now things might change and if they do then I might not have to buy a ps3 but for now these 4 companies are the best rpg developers (next to square-enix). The only exclusive rpg developer Xbox has is mystwalker.

Konami, KOEI, Ubisoft, Hudson Soft, Capcom, Namco, Obsidian, Success, and square are some developers currently developing RPG's for ps3. no release day but I'm sure some will come within 2 years, and if not they are still at least 14 rpgs on there way.

All the current series are going to PS3 if they continue; maybe not all will be exclusive but all will be on ps3: Dark cloud, shadow hearts, Final fantasy, grandia, wild arms, suikoden, growlancer, Breath of fire, the xeno's, Disgaea, Castlevania's, Shin Megami Tensei, Ys, Shining's, Arc the lad, Kingdom hearts, Valkrie profile, and few others that I don't own yet.

So for now PS3 has about 80% of my interest were xbox and wii have about 10% each. This doesn’t help Sony much because RPG games only hold 10% of the market in the US.

I think it's great when third party developers and publishers release their games on more then one platform, because it gives gamers options. At this point, in the next-gen race (at least between Sony and Microsoft), it's going to be the first party titles that sell the system, IF most third party titles appear on both systems.

I get happy when I see certain Playstation staples, that aren't first party titles, go multi-platform, because it'll give me a chance to play/buy them. I don't have any money to buy a PS3 right now, so if I can get the next Grand Theft Auto, or Devil May Cry game, then that's great. However, I don't really have any interest in these two games. Assassin's Creed, which was thought to be PS3 exclusive for about a day, is something I'm looking forward to.

In the end I bought the Xbox 360 for the first party titles like Halo 3 and Forza Motorsports 2, for example. If it gets some other titles I thought looked good, that were previously only on Nintendo or Sony systems, then that's great. The same can be said for gamers on those platforms. I'm sure some PS3 only owners would love to have some of those BioWare RPGs, that have been gracing the Xbox/Xbox 360.

This generation of systems could be the best generation for consumers with all the games that are going multi-platform. The decision to choose one system over another can be made with less sacrifice than ever before.
