I have been following this forum for a while now and I have been wondering about the benefits of a PPU? It appears, and may be just my perception, that not many games fully support a PPU? I am currently running two 8800 GTX's in SLI and I am curious if I will see any significant improvement in the eye-candy? I would appreciate any recommendations.

Read this thread and then form your own opinion.
You'll have to have a reason to buy it.
Such as a game you like / want to use it for.
So far there are few and far between and many on a "list"

You and people like yourself are the reason that I ask questions here. I did not read all of the post's, but I know that there is absolutely no reason to buy one!
Many thanks. Unfortunately, I still need to buy something!

Well put it this way. If you have the money to buy one and don't care. Get one, but seriously right now and for quite a while there won't be any huge reasons to get one. It'll probably just waste space in your case. You could buy a 750 gb HD instead, or something that you feel would be better.

given that he already has 2 150gig raptors and 3 500gig drives I don't think he really needs another one...

I think a better investment would be another 8800gtx.....that he could give to me....:p

Save your cash.

Buy a GIC or a stock or something useful?

You dont HAVE to buy anything yknow...

I can tell you why not to buy one. If you cant find any reasons for yourself to buy one then dont bother.

Pointless piece of hardware until developers start to support it. Even then I question its importance.

u could buy me a x1900gt, and a f-I90hd if you'd like!

but back to the topic, its very usless right now, and u would just be generating more heat in your case for nothing, so get me that stuff and u will feel like u made a bargin!!

or get me a raptor? i would save your money for another 8800gtx for when sli2 is released (dont know eta) besides, ure 8800gtx does physics anyway.

How about a Killer Nic card? Or wait till q3 when intel is dropping their q6600 to $266 and in april to $533

Unfortunately, I still need to buy something!

Give it to charity ? Take your wife/GF out for dinner ? Buy her a present ? get the car detailed ? New clothes ? Get a better soundcard or speakers ?

Any of the above would be a drastic improvement over throwing $$$ away on a PPU ;) JMHO

You could buy a killer nic. Heck the price has dropped from $250 to $150, it helps alot for online gameplay/LAN gaming.

And then, if you still got the room, get a PPU as well. For now only a couple of games use it. Likely in the future the number will increase as new games come out that can utilize it.

Cell Factor;)

QFT! Cell Factor rocks. However, if you're a coder, having access to the SDK and an "additional" CPU is pretty neat. I've been using the SDK to write some little apps to do video processing on the PPU. The PPU is not "physics" specific. It's just a very fast processor that has lots of parallel pipelines. I've been playing with it for on-the-fly H.264 encode and decode.

Ive said that already... well you added more details hehe.

The money is burning a hole in your pocket you want one. Buy one.

fuck that! If money is burning a hole in your pocket that you're considering a PPU right now, send the money to me. or fuck it, send it to charity.

PPUs aren't worth it right now.

Only way I see it making sense to purchase one is if you can use it as a tax right off! ;)

It make only sense wenn there is a Game out wich you realy like and uses it to full potentional.
Like CF revolution and warmonger. Those game uses PPU in a way that they are different then any game before.
till then you could wait for the price to drop more. So buy one wenn you could need one.
And that up to the games avaible wich uses it right. And you also want to play.

Wonder wenn CF:R and warmonger are released.

You could always buy a copy of THE RULES ...Then you would know that sigs are 10 lines or less....not 12..:)

People in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks, or post off topic, or thread hijack, or thread cap, or off topic post, etc.

I'am planning to build a vista game rig to be DX10 games capable.
The deadline is wenn DX10 games wich I like are avaible and in possession run them first on my dX9 XP rigs.
So 1june I will browse the net of what hardware is aviable bij then.
Are QC CPU afordable by then?. Crytech Valve?
Also 4GB mem.
new chipsets and mobo with 2+1 slots and a spare for audio and PPU.
And yes by then there wil be some PPU specific games out like
CF:revolutions and warmonger.
So It will have a PPU to, my third?
And of course a R600

I expect the PPU games aren't DX10. So run fine on my 2 other DX9 PPU rigs. Are of those games more suited for LAN gaming then online, due to PhysX load sync. So needs some PPU rigs have already two.
So the deadline for me are the DX10 games.

But wenn I build it it will have a PPU in it.
A GpGPU card will come wenn there are or is a favorite HavokFX game out. That could take a bit longer.

Maybe june or between mid november.

Wasting your money on a PPU is not the best thing to do.
Buy a box of the finest sigars and smoke the money away.
