Xbox 360: Horizontal or Verticle?

I just got a Xbox 360 and was wondering what position you have yours in and why?

I have always seen pics online of the Xbox 360 in a verticle position, but to me this seems kinda of an add way to position it. When it is verticle it is more prone to being knocked over or even off its stand. Also it seems it is also alot harder to get disks in and out of the tray. So why is it always pictured online in the verticle position?
 
I like verticle but it always scares me to have discs fall down while loading/unloading a new dvd. Horizontal is preferred if space permits!
 
Disc tray has a scooped underside when it stands vertically, the discs can't fall unless you drop them yourself, never had any worries about disc dropping. Standing vertical has a smaller footprint, providing more desk space. The xbox360 is heavy, and has no practical risk of falling since the only thing that goes by that area are my fingertips. It's far more likely to die because I'm playing on it than to die because of moving.
 
Good Poll! I have been curious about this as well.

For me, I can only run it in verticle because of where it is placed. I would have it horizontal if I could just because it's easier to put the disk in.
 
Mine is horizontal on a shelf underneath my computer desk. Even though the console was designed to stand up..this seems more natural because gravity does it's job with the game disks and the vent holes on the "bottom" are free to breathe. Never had a problem with mine this way..
 
I like mine vertical, but putting disks in sideways seemed strange at first.
 
I keep all of my systems horizontal. I've got everything set-up in an entertainment center/TV stand, so it just makes more sense for me.
 
I had my 360 horizontal until last night when I bought a Pelican fan stand. I have the 360 in an entertainment center and while I tried to keep it as open as possible, it was still worrying the shit out of me. That box was heating up badly.

So I put it vertical in a bigger area of the entertainment center with the Pelican stand. That should help it.
 
Horizontal..

just look at it.. it was meant to be horizontal.. if you look at all the writting on it.. it's all written such that you can read it whe nit's horizontal.. therefore i know they enigneered it for horizontal operation :D

i like horizontal... more vents are exposed in the horizontal mode.. so i think it cools better liek that as well
 
horizontal, feels safer and with the way it is in my setup vertical just wouldn't work.
 
Microsoft warns in the manual that while in the vertical position the Xbox 360 could maim or seriously injure small children or babies by falling down on top of them. (seriously, its in there, go check)

If you check when its in the horizontal. The small rubber pads, don't leave
enough room for heat to escape.

I found out with the vertical it allows for better air flow and less surface area
*on the bottom* covered by something else to let heat escape.

I wish there was a survey showing if xbox 360's brick more if they are in the horizontal.

The only bad part about the vertical is like everyone else is saying. It works great, i'm just afraid that one day because of how the drive was engineered I'm going to get scratches / gouges on my game disc.

in the vertical position you cover a lot of vent holes.. in the horizonal.. you don't cover so many though
 
Horizontal. Vertical has a much higher chance of scratching your discs if moved while spinning.
 
Horizontal. The cabinet I have mine in used to hold my original Xbox, so when I configured the shelves, it was made for a horizontal unit.
 
I am sorry to say that I agree with almost all the comments made so far. lol, I am serious, i can see the +'s and -'s to both. After reading this i started looking closer at the xbox 360 itself.

my Xbox has been sitting with the power off in the horizontal position for about 6 hours sense I played it last. I stood it up on its end and I can feel heat coming out the side panel (which was on the bottom.) remind you this was with the power OFF! Theres no heat coming out of the Top (which was on the side with it in the horizontal position). theres a big differance in the amount of heat coming from these vents. what scares me about this is that with the Xbox in the Horizontal position these bottom vents do not have any clearance between tham and the table its sitting on, just not much room for heat to escape form the vents. I have not paid any attention to how much heat it makes when playing a game, but if can tell the differnace with it powered off I am sure it makes a big differance with it on.

Hmmmmm, I just got an idea, Why not use a Lap Top Cooler and place it under your horizontal Xbox to help keep it cool. You know, the ones that look like a cookie sheet with fans mounted in it. Maybe even mod it so the fans on one side blow in and the other side they blow out, to help with the natural cross flow of the air.
 
I was thinking myself, of keeping my 360 in the vertical position,
but... making 4 separate corner supports to lift it up a little bit off of the surface.

It's just that I feel that more surface area is still covered in the horizontal and doesnt dissipate heat as quickly even though im covering some vent holes in the vertical.
