Undecided on Remote

Getting a usb-uirt and then girder or HiP should let you use pretty much any remote you want. (It does in XP, don't know how those programs work with vista though.) You could also use those programs with the firefly or remote wonder to avoid the 360 issue.

insta-edit and shamepless plug - it's probably cheaper to get the MS remote from pcalchemy.com

Unfortunately it's not. It's Cheaper to get it on newegg because for 2 dollars less to my area code I can have it in 2 - 3 days versus parcel post.

Couple things to check on the 360:
Do you actually use a remote with your 360? If not, just put some tape over the IR sensor.
Also, check the 360 dashboard for remote settings. I'm pretty sure there's an option that tells it to ignore the MCE remote and only work with a 360 specific remote.

Honestly, for a cheap functional remote the Snapstream is hard to beat. But don't expect it to do anything fancy.

You want fancy, go with the USB-UIRT.
You want cheap as possible and still work, use the Snapstream.

can you use girder with the snapstream?

all I really need a remote to do is to, turn the monitor to sleep mode, controle volume/mute and play and stop my windvd program.

I've been looking all over for a HTPC remote

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16880100851

I was just giong to buy this vanilla microsoft remote, but it turns on the 360 and I can't have that since the 360 is in the same room that my htpc is in.

Is there an alternative out there that is cheap and will work with vista MCE?

Aka snapstream etc?

Don't waste your time with anything else.
Get the MCE remote. It works with Power DVD, WinDVD, other HTPC programs, and many other applications (windows explorer, etc.).
I got mine for less than $30, but I forgot where (PCalchemy ??? buy.com ???).

Gonna have to go with the snapstream firefly remotes. Tried and have every other type people have listed and nothing works as well. As an added benefit its RF so you don't have to make sure you aim it on the pickup for it to work. The general contruction of the remote is fairly decent quality and the buttons don't feel cheap unlike most of the MCE remotes I've used which feel like you could shove the entire button into the remote if you accidentally sat on it or pushed too hard.

I bought the MCE remote a week ago and it came in the mail yesterday. I am fairly pleased. Now all i have to do is find ir blaster software to get the remote to work for my tv etc.

HiP should do the trick. It can even learn codes from your existing remote to send out, without you having to find a code on a website.

Girder would be another option, but in my experience was a big headache to get set up, and also isn't free.
