Basically, what is going on is i'm getting my 1080p Samsung 50" in a few weeks, but I bought a HDMI to DVI-D cable so I can see the Blu-Ray movies in 720p on my dad's TV. I bought the Sony Component Cables, but everytime a Blu-Ray movie is started on it, the PS3 reconverts it back to 480 which really sucks. And, my buddy has his PS3 with a straight HDMI cable hooked up to his 720p tv, and he can see the Blu-Rays in High Def. So, will I be able to finally see the Blu-Rays in HD this time with this cable?

I know what you are doing wrong. The ps3 only outputs blu-ray movies at 1080i or 1080p, (regardless if it is using component or HDMI). Therefore, you must have 1080i checked in the options menu, in order for it to work in HD. Your TV is 720p native, but I guarantee it has a 1080i mode. Just make sure the ps3 is checked for 1080i in the options menu.

You do need need HDMI for high definition! Component works just fine, for blu-ray and all! However, yes, a DVI-D to HDMI cable will work, but that assumes your display supports HDCP.

I'm pretty sure you don't need hdcp, though any new tv will have it anyway. As for the cable, yes dvi and hdmi are the same video output, its a 1:1 pin conversion so no quality should be lost in the "conversion." It should be the same as using a normal hdmi cable.
