building a beast on a budget

I'm s simple person. with simple needs:

2gb ram. Core2 as fast as I can afford (I'm not planning on OC, but looking to quad in the future) Firewire on the mobo. I'm waiting until after the next wave of Intel price cuts to do this and am shooting for the e6600 or 6700, hell mabe quad out of the box with the new releases. I'm also waiting to see what falls out later in q2 with R600 and the midrange video hardware, probably where going budget will hurt the most.

I can come up with everything else just fine. It will be a clean Vista build. My only major issue is that I'm a sim geek. FSX is single threaded and a real pig. It's also my primary game (except for crackdown on the 360) so single threaded performance is important, but I need to live in a budget for new hardware.

Everything has become a matrix migraine. What mobo? What Ram? I just want solid and fast without pushing that has a but of a path over the next 3-4 years as a viable system until the next major OS release. I'm having a baby in July, so I'm planning on poverty soon :)

If you are not overclocking, it is not a beast.

Thats true, in a way... :D

wtf? 6600 @3920Ghz - Congrats 2 that, now thats an achievment!:) , I posted earlier in sum other thread how was hoping 4 someone to get near 4ghz, now I recon itl pass it nicely.

Yes, we need to know your budget or else we can't really help you much. Nvidia is coming out with their 8600 mainstream dx10 cards in q2 and the price for a 8600ultra(512mb dx10) will be $180.

I realy duno what to suggest, Id say if you r desperate 4 a new system get c2duo - they dont seem to be that much different from a quad + still you can oc it nicely if you change your mind. Hopefully in mid april intel will release new quad and prices r gona drop abit for existing products, so Im definately waitng at least till april-may.

TRUE quad in due in 08... if its true.

The budget is deliberately vague. Whatever it costs for as inexpensive as possible. I'm not in to SLI and esoteric cooling (non air)

I want to stay under $1k, but we'll see about that.

If you are building on a budget like me then you should be willing to buy used. Don't set any one part in stone, just come up with a general plan part wise and check forums and the hot deals. (like the 2x1GB Pony DDR2 667mhz for $160 w/ $60 MIR, doesn't get any better then that)
