Well I posted in the OS section about my issue with my new RaptorX 150gb harddrive I bought along side a bundle of Athlon 64 FX-60 + Vista64-Ultimate;

I plugged in the FX-60 cpu first tried it out, no problem, but needed a bios update to recognize it, then I installed the new RaptorX, and put the Vista64 DvD in, it started to install the OS, then I hear a "click" sound and the computer shutdown......I try it again says need to restart Vista install, so I do that it goes a little further into install and then another "click" and the system shutdown......Now the computer wont even post with that drive, had to go back to my main with Win2k, and everything works smooth as butter, but I just shelled out a couple hundred bucks on this new harddrive I want.

Can a new hd be bad from the begining ?

you can absolutely have parts failure out of the box - for anything.

it sounds like you have something other than a HDD issue; the system shouldn't be shutting off due to a drive error. i would say overheat, but this is an AMD. are all of the other new parts known good?

Everything else I have had for a long time with no problems before. The FX-60 is new but worked fine as soon as I installed it last night, with a new bios patch, and played some games on my old drive, and worked smooth :)

When I plugged the new harddrive in again, there is a click sound right away coming from it, sounds like from the platter, and it wont even post the computer now, but plug back in my main drive and that is what I am typing to you from, with everything working nice.

yeah, you have a DOA drive. RMA it.

So it is not a Vista64 issue, well I would doubt that because I couldnt even install the whole thing.

Is it possible the new RaptorX was flawed from the begining, or did I damage it ? All I did was install the new drive like I have on a dozen other system build's over the last 6-7 years with never a big problem on building a new computer. When I first plugged it in, and started installing Vista64, it got to the install screen of the OS, then made a loud clikc and shutdown the computer by itself. So I had to go through the Vista install again, second time it goes a little further into the install, then again a click and shutdown. The tird time it makes repeated click sounds, and wont even post ?

Is there something I am not doing right installing the new harddrive ? I thought it was very simple to install a new drive, and this was to be my main and only drive too.

I unplug my current harddrive, from the PSU cable, and the Serial ATA connector, then with that same cable/connector I plugeed them into the brand new drive and turn the computer on, with the Vista64 disc in the DvDrom drive, and set biso to boot off the Sony disc drive to go into auto install of windows Vista64, is that not the correct way to do it ?

Thank's

beleive it or not,not all hardware is perfect

it could of been damaged off the line
it could of been damaged during any shipping it had, maybe you got the drive that fell out of the box and had 10ft fall...

accept it, test it, RMA it and move on :)

I once dropped a brand new HD 4 feet onto a wood floor. Tossed it in feeling sure it'd be DOA and I'd have to buy another. It worked fine and kept working until I upgraded because of space. HD's are actually pretty tough as long as the heads are parked (which they are if there's no power going to them - been a LOOOONG time since you've had to manually park 'em). Just RMA it - there isn't a single mass-produced product out there that doesn't have a few defects come off the line.

If you heard a click than its your hard drive. I own that raptor x and believe me that there shouldnt be clicks. And yes the more systems you build the more you will realize that parts come bad from the factory.

I bought the RaptorX with the see-through window, and when it made the click sound you could see the arm over the platter jump at the same time, so no question it is new harddrive.

I am just wondering if I did something wrong to break it, but dont see how ? I have built quite a few system's and I always have built a solid stable computer. When I first plugged in the RaptorX ans started the Vista64 install and hearing that first "click" sound and the computer shutting down on it's own, was very strange......Then I had to install Vista64 again, and it went a little longer then again click and it shutdown

So to me that is not user's fault is it ? I used the same PSU cable and SerialATA connector that ws on my main 75gb Raptor drive, and that baby has been plugged in that way for over 18months with no lockups ever. Does this new 150gb version need to be plugged in differently than my old drive, something I am not doing correct ?

OK. Last time. Your drive is broken. You did not break it. It was broken when you got it. If you REALLY insist on thinking you broke it, then go ahead and buy a new drive. But you didn't break it. It was broken when you got it. RMA it to WD and they'll give you a new one. You didn't break it. It was broken when you got it.

got it?

;)

Nope. I too upgraded from the 74 gig raptor to the raptor X and love the drive and no there is no difference in installing the X from the normal. Just contact WD and they will issue you a new one. No big deal. Just tell them that the hard drive clicks and shuts down. Also mention that the platter doesnt spin at all. Whenever you tell a harddrive company that the platter doesnt spin than its obviously a harddrive issue. Iv had quite a few harddrives that went bad. So no worries. Just use your 74 giger until the new one comes. But you will love the X. I love mine.

Good luck.

Well I should be back with a new harddrive in an couple hours, will plug it in with the four pin PSU connector same as for a DvDrom, and use the big rectangle SerialATA connector. Or I can try the newer way shown on the website, with the PSU-SerialATA power connector now found on newer PSU's like mine in signature, and then use the smaller little cable to attach to motherboard and harddrive ?

If you have the smaller sata and straight psu cable (the smaller one) use that. I have raptors in all my systems and use both sets of cables (the original older large psu and large sata and the smaller set) but like the smaller one because i can wire manage it better. Save the larger psu molex cables for other peripherals. Post when you get your stull. and cross your fingers:)

Well cross your fingers and toes......Just got home with the new replacement RaptorX :) they did not hassle me one bit on the exchange

alright they are crossed. build away and lets see if the bird flies.

Well here is an update, some very strange things going on, but does not seem harddrive related. Had no trouble exchanging the RaptorX for a new one ......Plug her in with SerialATA PSU cable, and also the little SerialATA cord to motherboard......Turn on computer everything sounds fine just black screen, no post nothing......I turn it off clear the CMOS turn it back on and everything is cool, go into the Vsita64 installation process, but it seems to take a long time for the DvDrom to get moving through the install screens in the begining >?

So it starts the install process, but everything just seems slow going through the motions between screens, like it is accessing too much or not reading the DvDrom correctly ?......Anyway's it does the install, and then when it says auto restart to continue into windows, it goes back to a black/blank screen where it should be posting and restarting, but all the parts are running and sound normal ?......So I clear the CMOS once again and start her up and it works, but I am going through the install again and it just seems slow as dirt to get to each stage of the install window ?

Sheesh. Are you definitely beyond a shadow of a doubt sure that everything works? slow installs are a bad sign and usually result in an aborted install. Take everything out that you dont need. leave one harddrive, one optic, and memory and video. Use no soundcard nothing. But dont work under the assumption that just because everything worked out in the past than it now works. I once troubleshooted a pc that the powersupply kicked the bucket and that damn psu worked for a good 4 years and i was scratching my head why i was getting random restarts and such. Another time i installed an old harddrive i had that worked for around 2 years and damn thing was broke, bla bla you get the point. At this juncture i would definitely test out all your pieces because something is either installed wrong (check all your wires and make sure everything is plugged in) or is not working. But please check the wires and make sure nothing got loose while you were installing the harddrive. Wiring getting loose happend to me many times when i installed things.

Hope this helps.

what PSU are ya runnin?

Eveyrthing is in my signature......I am now posting from my main system again under the original 75gb harddrive, and it work's perfectly smooth as butter.

I bought a really nice 750watt brand name PC Power and Cooling, and have had it for like two months, and it is nice quiet and runs my 8800GTX without a sweat, never seemed to have any issue what so ever with this PSU so far

Maybe it was that bios update I did last night to accept my new FX-60......after the bios update is finished it ask's yes or no to restart the system, I click yes of course and the computer just hung there, I had to manually turn off the computer......But right now everything on my old drive is here and it works fast as heck and stable so i do not know what the problem is ??
