I want to input directv into my computer to watch on a monitor that doesn't have input capabilities of it's own (dell 3007). What card can I get that will let me watch video through component (or digital dvi/hdmi) input?

There's nothing out there in the consumer range. The only option is an expensive pro level peice of gear for a component input.

You'll have to use S-Video.

You sure about that? I could have swore I saw a component to VGA converter at BestBuy once...

Edit: They do exist:

One of those and a switch box (to change between his computer and his satellite receiver) and you could rout video directly from the reciver to the monitor.

ya, they do exist, but that cable will not work since it doesn't have a transcoder built into it. That cable will only work with certain front projectors.

This device should work though: http://www.vdigi.com/index.php?option=content&task=blogcategory&id=67&Itemid=28

There's another website with dozens of similar transcoders but unfortunately i can't find the link atm...

The OP said he wants to run the video through his computer, not plug it right into the monitor.

yes, OP said hook to computer, so that cable will not work. and yes, those cables only work if the display device will accept the component signal through the VGA port. Usually that is just on projectors. The Vdigi will allow a component device to be directly connected tot the monitor via the VGA port with pretty good results though. Also works with game consoles. The x2vga2 is another good option.

Ya, noticed that, didn't notice OP mention anything about recording so i through the vdigi up there as another option.

OP were you also looking to record? If so then Valve posted the correct setup above. Otherwise if you are looking for a workaround to your lcd lacking component inputs, then a transcoder would be another viable option.

I don't want to be able to record. I need to use a computer input as opposed to a monitor switch because I plan on using a dell 3007, which has no image processing capabilities to scale images.

No other 2560x1600 monitors out there :(

I'm pretty sure that apple has one, and wasn't HP or someone else just about to launch another one? Don't know what kind of inputs the other monitors have though.

Neither of them have anything but a single DVI input, and they don't do any image processing/scaling.

If I'm understanding correctly, some form of traditional style component in would work, ala the type available on a few TV Tuner cards, right? Like this [Newegg] one.

yeah, those are composite, not component. Red is right audio, white is left audio, yellow is video.
