Assuming you had Windows Photoshop and Mac Aperture and could only learn how to use one, which would you choose.

I have access to both machines, and both programs, but time for only one.

Smart thing would be to try both and see what I like, but what would you start with? I.e. a beginner.

Time is so limited.

Well

1) Photoshop on pc & mac are almost identical.
2) Photoshop is FAR more widely used.

Can you guess what my suggestion is?

Photoshop for sure. Also dont know if you shoot pics in RAW as, well but CS3's RAW adjuster is great now. Works much better than the last version. If you have CS2 download the CS# demo, many improvements.

They really are 2 completely different apps. I use Aperture and Photoshop, I use Aperture for all of my cataloging, and basic edits because I like the way it handles my nikon RAW files more then Photoshop. Although if I have to do anything other then basic edits I throw it to Photoshop. So a better comparison would be do you want to learn Aperture, Nikon Capture, or Adobe Lightroom.

Havent used lightroom. All I know is CS3 handles Nikon RAW much better.

I don't know the time table, but do you know when it will be released (CS3)?

Aperture is a glamorized iPhoto. Photoshop is a true editing program. Enough said.

wow. yet another nail in the lid.

He speaks the truth; these 2 programs and not really comparible; but not "completely" different.

Photoshop = Advanced and complex, full featured editor.

Aperature = A combination brower, RAW editor, .........................

I have full copies of both, but Aperture is what I use 99% of the time.

I can to import, manage, edit, catalog, organize, adjust, publish, export, and archive all of my photos using one application. For my post-production needs, its workflow and UI is superior.

However, when I want to crop someone's head and put it on someone else's body, I find Photoshop to be invaluable.

I use Aperture, CS2. I keep coming back to C1Pro. It does everything. Most of the time I do not even need to sharpen, etc with CS2 after editing in C1Pro...

I use adobe's lightroom beta, which is their competitor to aperture (or will be anyway)

I use lightroom(aperture) ALOT more than photoshop since I downloaded it.

labs.adobe.com

Better than CS2 by far. Has sliders for adjustments , more adjustments and, is faster as well. I dont use Capture myself.

i would choose photoshop, because it is more standard, therefore more of your questions will get answered, you will learn probably faster, there are more tutorials, i also believe that photoshop has more features, such as high dynamic range merge, and i think it also has a better Camera Raw editor. The layout of photoshop i prefer over aperture

Aperture has focus on workflow and organization; Photoshop has focus on image editing. They're not comparable in the least. In an ideal world, you'd use both.

I got to see Aperture in action the other day and you can't compare them. The thought of buying a Mac Mini just to use that app has crossed my mind a few times. What about Adobe Darkroom?

Lightroom, not Darkroom. It's pretty good, but I'm not entirely satisfied with it. It's great for importing and editing (color adjustments, cropping, rotating, removing vingetting, etc), but its organisational capabilities leave a lot to be desired.

On the other hand, I heard that Aperture doesn't work as well on lower-end hardware as Lightroom, and that it doesn't work as well with my Pentax' RAW files.

That blows... I need a way to organize a crapload of pictures.
