Do I need windows vista to take advantage of this card and its features?

for the most part yes.
i do believe there are still some opengl extentions that only the 8800series has, but iirc there are only three.
so yes, need dx10 card, dx10 os, and dx10 game :)

So what happen if you need DirectX 10 and is running XP Pro? As I notice Nvidia.com has the following:

http://www.nvidia.com/page/8800_tech_specs.html

Operating Systems

* Built for Microsoft Windows Vista
* Windows XP/Windows XP 64
* Linux

So how do you read between the lines? Do they mean

a) Built for Vista, XP, XP 64 and Linux

OR

b) Build for Vista, but also run somewhat to some degree on XP, XP 64 and Linux

^^ You're out of luck. There will be NO DX10 for XP.

And it would be a modified (b):

Build for Vista (DX10), runs DirectX9 on XP, XP 64 and Linux amazingly uberly.

The card will run under all the above listed operating systems, but since DX10 is only included with Windows Vista, it will be required to take advantage of Direct X 10 features that the 8800 series cards support. Currently, the G80 GPUs are fully Direct X 10 functional (though there is no current method to test this that I know of) in single GPU mode. Right now SLI DX10 support is non-functional.

I suppose mircosoft has find some way to make people buy their OS eh?
On a side note, I don't think their OS is selling well at all, their stock hit a 8 day consecutive down at high volume as of Mon.

their os will sell well over the next couple years when almost everyone with a computer buys it in some way.

Fortunately, IBM, HP, etc. still owns XP Pro license and is still selling their computers w/ XP Pro. In similar pattern, I bought my P4-1.3GHz back in Sept. 2001, from Compaq Corp. (now HP), and it still bundle w/ Win 98 SE.

^^ I like that a lot. As long as people (and companies) forcibly keep XP alive, Microsoft will have no choice but to include it in its future plans.

Really, if you look at it, the delay of Vista is what shot Microsoft in the foot (from its perspective). The public was used to being forced to upgrade every ~2 years (3.1 -> 95 -> 98 -> ME -> XP), until XP came along. People finally realized that, even with the constantly changing hardware between 2001 and 2007, XP still worked fine. All you needed was that one operating system. Now I think people are looking at Vista (the upgrading to it, its "new" features, etc.) a lot more skeptically than they would have had it come out only ~2 years after XP.

Just my $0.02.

....Microsoft stopped supporting Windows XP a while back. I can't remember exactly when, but they have a 5-year cycle for support with operating systems. I could be wrong on the exact timing or the number of years, but I'm almost positive it was time to come out with a new OS due to their support cycles. They still provide updates and security fixes, but actual "support" of the product is done.

I won't say too much else since I obviously don't have the full details, but someone here who orders operating systems in bulk should be able to quote the support agreement accompanying Windows XP and tell you when it ended, and why continuing to ship Windows XP is a bad thing.

EDIT: Found the link: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/support/endofsupport.mspx
ANOTHER EDIT: That is for 98, ME and XP SP1... I guess SP2 will be supported for a bit longer!
YET ANOTHER EDIT: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2007/jan07/01-24ExtendedSupportWindowsMA.mspx They extended support through 2009.

You completely missed the point of what I'm saying. If in 2 years or whatever when they stop supporting it, the have millions of users still using it, they're going to have no choice really but to keep supporting it or completely give up on that entire chunk of the market. I think they'll just keep supporting it grudgingly. And you never know, we might get faux-DX10 or something with it. :p

As I said, I don't think this transition is going to be like any other for Microsoft OS' because of the sheer time between them. Before, within 5 years there were 2 more OS' out there, right now, there's only one new choice, and I think Microsoft might have to rethink their product life cycle because of it.

But yes, I admit I don't know, it depends basically on Vista sales in the next year.

I didn't miss the point, I'm choosing to ignore it. You say "they won't have a choice" like you believe it... but you know, somewhere deep in your soul, that they DO have a choice, and they will choose to ignore the insignificant sections of the population who CHOOSE not to upgrade.

People can make choices that hurt Microsoft, but Microsoft can make choices that hurt people, too. That isn't true in most business, but for Microsoft all it takes is time.... when you're the richest kid on the block, you have PLENTY of time.

I understand what you're saying, but even Microsoft has to think into the future. If they alienate people by completely shutting down on XP soon, I think it's going to hurt them come Blackcomb: Linux and, if they ever release it to general PCs, MacOS X, are gaining support from both the corporate and personal worlds, and I think if Microsoft just ignores those who don't wish to upgrade (which I guarentee you, a LOT of buisnesses don't, it's too time consuming, tedious and costly), come Blackcomb people might go in other directions (OS-wise), since by that time I think OpenGL, AL, etc. will have advance beyond the need for Windows OSes.

But again, we must wait and see. I'm not an insider in Microsoft; by all accounts you could be completely right, but this is what I think they might do.

Even if Mcirosoft stopped supporting XP Pro, it doesn't stop users older OS. As long as OEM manufacturers from taiwan support those older OS.

Even as of today, most video card manufacturer still support win 98 se driver. Just like many other components such as Ethernet, audio etc., as long as those OEM manufacturer has win 98 SE driver then would work for me
